Something I’ve had to make my peace with lately is that I’ve become an extremely slow reader. At the height of my studies, as I was finishing up my double Comp Lot/English degree and starting my English MA at the same time, I’d speed through books and it would be almost all I did. Then my brain stopped. Now, it needs to relish what I read, even if it means taking days on a text that would have taken a couple of hours. Weeks. I’ve been carrying Muriel Spark’s Memento Mori around since mid-October, and I love it. It’s a fantastic read for this kind of year. But I’ve also still not finished it. It drives me mildly crazy, but it also means that at least I’m more present, in my life, but also in my books. (Lets be really though, a binge read would be very welcome around now.) A fascinating if frustrating transition. 📕 🍂
