"Goodbye" - for Sam

He had heard the shout before the shot, a scream that ripped through the crisp morning air like a white-hot knife through butter. Pressure had erupted near dead center of his chest, tearing pain cutting through flesh just below his armpit following upon its tail. Sam knew what had happened, though the realization that it was his life hanging in the balance was slow to process.
As his body crumbled to the floor, she was there breaking his fall. Threat neutralized, call a paramedic. It was all standard, officer down she shouted as her fingers dug into the rapidly expanding pool of red upon the grey uniform. Stay with me, she chokes out, hang in there - he c a n â t. There ledge he hangs on over the abyss is too thin, fingers are slipping.
âJules⊠I love you.â
Sheâs telling him that everything is going to be okay, that heâll be on his way to the hospital soon. They both know sheâs wrong but the hope is still foolishly there. Please, the word spills from the constableâs mouth, please donât leave me.
âEverything we did⊠together, the good and the bad.â He coughs hard, crimson trickling out of the corner of his lips. Theyâre scrambling to get a medic, to save his life. Itâs too late, thereâs nothing they can do. âYou made my life⊠beautiful. Made it worth living⊠to the fullest..â
Heâs fading fast, eyes closing as his head rests against her chest and she gives him a shake. âIâll always be the⊠angel on your shoulder.â Eyes flutter open, pupils expanding as his body loosens up and he whispers âSee you on the other side.â.
She cries out in anguish,          cursing the Heavens above until her lungs burn.
Goodbye, Samuel Braddock. Weâll keep watch from here.

Jules rolled her eyes and she gave Spike a shove as she laughed.   âOur geek with combat skills. Now can you show me how you just    did that? Youâre supposed to help me.â

@constablejulesâ is on the beat.Â
There were times where Ed had to sit down and collect his thoughts in relative silence. While the rest of team one was exercising or catching up on paperwork and gossip, their team lead was seated in the briefing room alone. A newspaper was held lazily in one hand, the other idly fiddling with a pencil. He wasnât aware of that someone was headed right towards him.
Grunting, the newspaper was set down in favor of a cup of coffee. Steam wafted from the miracle brew, carrying the delicious scent up to his nostrils. There was a lot on Edâs mind and his brief disconnect from his surroundings was evidence of that. Once he realized Jules had joined him, he tilted his head to look up at her.
âDid you know thereâs going to be a        new coffee shop opening up a block away from here? â
Jules had come in before the others, wanting some extra   time to exercise. She had had the luxury of a long weekend   but she had been itching for a good work out. Since she   had come earlier, she finished exercising before the others.   After putting on her gear she made her way to the briefing   room, grabbing a coffee and a file up on the way.Â
A smile formed on her lips as she noticed Ed deep in his   thoughts. Instead of trying to get him back to reality, Jules   just sat down opposite him, sipping her coffee and going   through the file. She looked up from her paper when Ed   mentioned the new coffee shop opening.Â
âI think I heard something like that. Letâs hope itâs better than   the coffee they have here, this is disgusting,â Jules responded,   a grimace on her face. It was beyond her why the SRU never   invested in a proper coffee machine, especially since most   teams lived on coffee occasionally.Â

Emersonâs filled with rage, and it warps his thoughts, twisting his stomach into knots till itâs too much, he needs to- he just has to. He needs to take it out on something- someone- Mansell. He leaps into action, but arms are on his shoulders the moment heâs even out of his seat staring at the man who had done nothing but date his twin sister to earn his hatred, and he growls, fingers clutching into the others shirt. âLet me go-â
Jules saw it happen before it actually did. Not because she  personally knows the detective, she doesnât, but she knows  what someone looks like when they are filled with rage.  Before the situation could escalate she had her hands on his  shoulders, keeping him from going at the throat of one of the  people in the precinct. âCalm down.â Jules hissed, struggling  the slightest bit to keep him where he was. âWhatever youâre  planning on doing, itâs not gonna make it better.â
âOkayâŠâ Spike went to the nursery to drop the items off. His hands were full, whatever conversation theyâd have would feel awkward because heâd need to talk around the stack of boxes. That and he was afraid that one of those âhormones attackâ, as Luke and Sam would called it and made him promise to never tell Jules about it, was gonna happen. So maybe he could avoid it a bit longer by going to the nursery.
âMost of them are doing shift work like us, Jules. Although Luke is totally avoiding this but itâs Luke,â he said once he returned to the living room. âAnd the others have their own family to take care of,â he added. He wasnât sure why he was kinda trying to defend them. It might not be a good idea to defend them right now. âUh, what?â Definitely not a good idea to defend any of them. âNo. Youâre just like, uh, your usual self. You hungry? I can make you something? What do you want to eat?â
She followed Spike up the stairs to the nursery. Carrying as much as she could possibly carry. They had delayed getting all things for the baby for so long, even if they had gotten so much from Wordy. She shouldâve asked Sam to get a day off to help her but they needed the money, she didnât want to put that kind of pressure on him.Â
âI know they are, but even when they are off they never come. I guess the years havenât changed anything. Youâve always been the only one willing to help me,â Jules mumbled, maybe this wasnât the best time to talk about this. It probably wasnât, but to her it was the truth that had to be said at one point. Her brothers had always thought she could take care of herself, that she could handle things on her own and it was true. But with the baby on the way and so much not being arranged, she wasnât sure if she could. âSo itâs true, they do think Iâve become irritating,â Jules sighed. Of course, how had she not seen that coming before. âIâm good, Iâm not hungry.â

Jules struggled against Spikeâs hold on her. She wanted him to let go of her, let her go in and save her husband. Her reaction was out of line and it would endanger not only her but the rest of her team as well but right now, she couldnât think of anything else. âI canât wait for that! Sam doesnât have the time for that!â Jules had to get in there. Had to get him out of there. Or at least someone had to go. It was Sadieâs fourth birthday next week, she couldnât lose her daddy already.Â

âI am a sniper. I am supposed to have a lot of faith in myself. If I question my every move, I will be bad at what I do.â Sam tilted his head to the side, listening to her advice. It seemed a little far fetched. If the guy asked for a free pass, was he supposed to tell him he wasnât going to get it?Â
âIâll keep that in mind.â
âSo am I. But thereâs a difference between having faith in yourself and becoming arrogant,â Jules mentioned. She herself wanted to be perfect, she hated making mistakes but she knew that it was only human to do so. âIâm sure youâll do fine with some practice, but itâs gonna be a big change for you I guess.â She just wanted to make sure that he wouldnât get it in his head that everything would go as he wanted, that heâd be great from the start. Sure there were high expectations and they trained in order to not screw things up, but something could always happen that would make it difficult.Â
