I found the things these games share in common really interesting, including the moon symbolism

I don't know how in line with canon this actually is, but I like to think that the moon in CKGH represents the Hero, or atleast partially so. Especially with how the Dragon King gazes up towards it every time he 'speaks' to him. The moonlight illuminating both him and Yuu in the mountain den too makes it seem like he's also gazing back... It's really neat to think about
Today is the Cruel King and the Great Hero's 5th anniversary!
Since this is a special occasion I decided to challenge myself and draw something abit more complex than usual. Thank you for this awesome game and story
Before June 21st ends over here I'd like to wish the Dragon King a very happy father's day.
I really wish I could draw something about him, but the happenings of life combined with CKGH's anniversary just 3 days from now means that I have to focus on those instead
So I'm just gonna talk and gush about him instead, game spoilers ahead, click if you are fine with that and is willing to indulge my unhinged, disorganized yapping
You know, I was always obsessed with dragons, had a fondness for characters with a painful past who becomes kinder, espescially if they are a parent/guardian of someone small and innocent
So naturally, when I found out about Dragon King it felt like hitting the biggest jackpot ever.
First, I was enamored by him right away when I just so happened to be shown fanart of him on my Twitter feed. I really liked his character design, his crown, horns, the black and yellow color pallete, the storybook-like artstyle, the way his eyes are positioned so that it's in line with his mouth. It stucked out to me even compared to other dragon stuff.
So I sought out which game he's from, played it, learn what's he's all about. And that metaphorical fire at the start slowly became an inferno the more I did learned about him
He had such a tragic, and sad backstory. A ruthless tyrant who was ultimately defeated by Yuu's dad. And then was not just shown mercy, but also got to experience raw, genuine compassion probably for the first time when the Hero took care of his wounds, fed him, and even visited him again and again after that.
Him with the remorse of laying waste to the kingdom, and the people of which the Hero hails from eating away at him is already enough, but then the story decide to sucker punch him a SECOND time by having the Hero die right before him (thanks alot Arthur).
And yet, despite all of that, he is kind. Very kind. I loved how kind he is. He gave Yuu the best possible father he could, he gave the monsters under his rule the best possible leader he could, even aiding humans whenever he can, and with his kindness he hopes to make a world without fear and hatred. Even if he has to die for it
Thank goodness he didnt, I cannot put into words how relieved I am that he lived at the end of the game. Even though, meta-wise, I knew that his death isn't likely. The whole final battle, and that QTE scene still had me super on edge (still very effective despite the game having pulled that trick before)
His plans for his own self-destruction is also another thing that makes me just want to scoop him up and give him a huge hug, even though that is physically impossible. I just wanna hug him and tell him that he doens't deserve to die, that I love him despite everything that happened, and that he can get to live in the world he so desperately want to become a reality. That's what the Hero would've wanted.
I was NEVER this passionate about a character before. Now I hoard official art and fanart of him, I draw fanart of him, a smile creeps up on my face when I think about him. It feels like whoever designed him at NIS went deep into my mind and hand-made the single most appealing character possible to me because I just truly love every single tiny little details about him. He's perfect. The peak of all peaks. Wish he adopted me.

The end credits of the game did scratched my itch for it but I desire more
After my previous post blew its goal of 1 like completely out of the water, I figured I should make more fanart to contribute to the community
but then what started as a silly doodle of a interaction taking place post-ending of CKGH became much more when ideas from the depths of my brainrot for this game kept surfacing, I cant help but imagine a whole story surrounding it
so here's a little comic I made!! I have not made anything like this before so I do hope that it turned out alright
The cruel king and the great hero is an amazing game and I am bummed out that there isn’t much fan content of it around
