36 HOURS AFTER CONTACTING THE SUICIDE HOTLINE

the moon with its holy shadows & scars sings to me as i brew my chai with extra cinnamon. the chipped tea kettle: a harmony. my moving hands: a harmony.

to think i might have missed this morning’s sight of daffodils blooming in february, or this afternoon’s imagining of my lover’s smile as he leans out of his window. yesterday while i sat with the phone in my trembling hands, someone ate a huge slice of birthday cake, chocolate & decorated with roses made of yellow frosting, their laughter

ensconced in candle smoke. someone bought their first acoustic guitar in a music shop teeming with vinyls of tender songs they might one day know how to play. a child just figuring out how to walk stumbled back & forth from one set of parents’ legs to another, grinning the whole way through, like i did once back when the only thing i knew about god was that foxes were bright red & in the summer damsons gleamed out from our front yard plum tree.

you’re not a burden, the person on the other end of the line told me. this pain is temporary & one day you’re going to know so much beauty that even your bones will shine with the light of it. so i hold on to my hot tea. this kitchen dances with a silence which understands that soon the sweet honeybees will be kissing the lavender sprigs again & a different set of constellations will start waking up in my blue patch of night sky.

i take my time drinking it all down. i feel the blood inside my body, this gentle constancy of my heartbeat. tomorrow’s forecast calls for heavy rain & you bet i’ll be standing right there in the swelling music of it, soaked through to the skin & alive, & wildly alive, & achingly alive.

Μια εβδομάσα πριν φτάσω στην Θεσσαλονίκη είχα διαβάσει το εξής: “Η κατάθλιψη είναι σαν τη μελαγχολία δίχως τη χάρη της.” Για το υπόλοιπο της βδομάδας αδυνατούσα να καταλάβω πως η μελαγχολία φάνταζε χαρισματική στα μάτια οποιουδήποτε. Άλλωστε εγώ γνώρισα μόνο τη βραχυθυμία της. Αυτό άλλαξε το πρώτο πρωινό μου στην Θεσσαλονική.

Έφτασα με το λεωφορείο αγορουξυπνημένη μόλις στις 7. Όσο περπατούσα κατά μήκος της Νέας Παραλίας έμεινα άφωνη από την αντίληψη του τι θα πει “χάρη της μελαγχολίας”. Με βοήθησαν να καταλάβω οι ψαράδες, που από μακρυά φάνταζαν να είναι οι ίδιοι μέσα στη θάλασσα. Με βοήθησαν οι δύο άνδρες που κάθονταν συζητώντας κοντά στη θάλασσα και ο ένας κουνούσε συνεχώς το χέρι του δείχνοντας τη. Βοήθησε η ομίχλη και πως έκανε τα κτίρια στον ορίζοντα να φαίνονται, βοήθησε η σιλουέτα του αγάλματος του Μέγα Αλέξανδρου κάτω από το μουντό ουρανό και το πόστερ που έγραφε “Imagine Peace”.

Παντού στη Θεσσαλονίκη διαισθάνθηκα τη μελαγχολία αλλά δε με έκανε να σκύψω το κεφάλι και να σωπάσω, αντιθέτως με έκανε να ανοίξω τα μάτια, να παρατηρήσω, να σηκωθώ να περπατήσω ακόμα παραπάνω για να βρω και άλλα υποδείγματα της γοητευτικής μελαγχολίας που είχα μόλις γνωρίσει. Μου πήρε μια στιγμή στο σωστό μέρος για να καταλάβω τι θα πει μια ολάκερη αίσθηση.

Forough Farrokhzad 1935- 1967

Forough Farrokhzad was an influential voice in twentieth century Persian literature. She lived in Iran during the Shah Pahlavi regime. Forough began composing poems when she was about thirteen. Forough lived in a time of change in Iran. Many women were challenging traditional gender roles, this type of change would affect Forough and her art.

Forough never got the opportunity to complete a high school education. She was put into an arranged marriage at the age of sixteen that lasted for three years. After the divorce, Forough lost custody of her only son and was forbidden to ever see him again. Forough began living by herself and was involved in an affair with a married man, making her the subject of scandal. Despite her reputation, Forough began studying again, specifically film production and acting. After making a documentary about a leper colony in Tabriz, she adopted a child whose parents fell victim to the disease. She began traveling through Europe and learned to speak English, German and Italian.

She developed feminist views and opinions. Forough encouraged women to embrace their individuality and wrote poems about feminine sexuality. She opposed the westernization of Iran but still chose to question traditions that she considered outdated and harmful. Forough became well known and accepted in literary circles. She still encountered a great amount of conservative criticism, life as a women divorcée was still seen as taboo not only in Iran, but in most of the world.

Forough died at the age of 32 in a car accident. Her poetry was banned for almost a decade after the Islamic revolution. She is now seen as a symbol of womanly strength and an example of feminine potential.

If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.
