Hmmm. I mean, just because the army as an institution is flawed and damaging doesn’t mean everyone in it is a terrible person. To paint every single veteran with the same brush is reductive and to make light of the debilitating mental disorders many have just seems wrong. Like yes, fuck the military as an institution completely 100%, but blaming disabled ex-front-line infantry maybe isn’t the best direction for our anger, perhaps.
A lot of veterans are poor people who were intentionally targeted by scouting programs coming to their schools starting at age 13, and most of them are worse off coming back than they were to start with… let’s be courteous to folks with PTSD

You don’t have to like the military, it’s massively fucked up but y'all needs understand that most people in the military are victims of propaganda and are usually poor or part of a minority who are taken advantage of in order to join.

They offered the ASVAB at my HIGH SCHOOL. They CAME INTO MY SCHOOL and said “If you guys take the military aptitude test, you get free donuts and you miss the first half of the day.” They brought in hot dogs. They brought food to a place where half of us were in poverty if not more, and they said, all you have to do is take a little test and you’ll get a snack, you don’t have to come in to school on time (an extra full hour of sleep that morning!). So we did. By the hundreds. My younger brother, a year behind me in school, scored “the highest we’ve ever seen in the whole damn state, son,” and for the next. Three. Fucking. Years. They harassed him. He got phone calls from every goddamn branch of the military. People would show up at our house at random, trying to recruit him. They’d tell him horror stories about how much better it is to enlist than be drafted (as if there’d been a draft in our lifetime!). They called our Mom at work. They sent recruiters to talk to our stepfather, who’d been in the Army, to try to get a handle on my brother’s weak points. THREE FUCKING YEARS OF THIS. My brother is the second child of six. My brother was thirteen by the time he had his own pillow for the first time. My brother was hungry all the time, dizzy from hunger some days–and oh, sidenote, my mother, stepfather and father are all abusive assholes who’d as soon hit you as look at you. Guess what year my brother graduated? If you guessed “May, 2002,” or “almost immediately after 9/11,” ding ding ding ding! The ONLY REASON my brother didn’t join the military, in the end, is that his girlfriend at the time said “If you enlist, I will never speak to you again.” Her dad was a military man, and he was also an abusive shithead, so in her head the two were inextricable. But if she’d said “go for it?” Or if she hadn’t said anything at all? Something like half of the males in my fucking graduating class enlisted. It was better than starving. And a great number of those are dead now. I hate the US military industry. I’m disgusted by the things our military does. But by god I don’t blame our veterans for what was done to them. Rich people don’t enlist. The ones who join the military are the ones who are hopeful that for once they’ll know that they’re getting a meal, not just today but tomorrow too.

I’m from a military family. My ancestors were members of the military in Germany in the 19th century, and when they finally immigrated to the United States around the turn of the century, a lot of the men went into the US Army, because it was tradition in my family. It still is. At least one guy from every section of my family has been in the military.
The ONLY FUCKING REASON I said “No” to the military early in life was because I could see the effects of it in the people around me. Both of my parents work at the VA in my hometown. I spent more time in a hospital as a young child than most people who don’t have health issues will in their first 30 years of life. And you know what I saw?
The effects of war. I saw veterans suffering from PTSD every day, yet they always put on a smile for me and tried to sugarcoat when I asked about the military because I was an 8 year old. At age 8, I was being steered away from the military by a bunch of people who had been victims of the US military, yet I still didn’t know how bad it could get.
And then my mom got transferred to the mental health ward of the VA, and I got my first look at what war really did to you. At age 12, I swore to myself that I would never go into the military, no matter what they offered me. I wasn’t going to be like the people I grew up around. Oh, they were lovely, kind individuals for the most part, but they’d warned me to not make their mistakes, and I agreed that I wouldn’t.
Oh yeah, I got recruitment officers. I was a band kid from a military family, of course I got just about every branch trying to convince me to join them. I said no every time.
I had to say no to a guaranteed paycheck that would allow me to play clarinet. I had to look a Marine officer dead in the eyes and tell him I’d rather risk not having the money for food than join the military. All because I grew up seeing what could happen to me if I had joined.
So really, be anti-war. Be anti-military. No one is saying you all can’t. But do NOT be a dick to veterans. There is so much at work here, and sometimes, you’re desperate, and the military has their ways of trying to convince you that they’re the best choice.
Hawkeye said it best. “War is war and hell is hell, but of the two, war is a lot worse.” Don’t be a dick. If someone has PTSD, don’t fucking set it off. Simple. It doesn’t matter if they’re a veteran or a survivor of abuse. If someone has PTSD, DO NOT SET THEM OFF.
it’s also worth noting that fireworks can trigger any form of PTSD, not just veterans’, and for a site that care an awful lot about mental health, you don’t get to just decide when or what is applicable to your campaign for mental health. This is an all or nothing situation.
I know this is a long post already but felt the need to add to this. Apologies as this isn’t my usual content. Might delete later if this feels like a rant.
I’m not from a military family. In fact, I’m from a very artistic and theatrical family. A massive amount of us are involved in the creative arts in some way and we always get told about my maternal grandfather who had a wonderful singing voice I sadly will never remember. He was one of the only people I remember having any involvement in the military.
Grandad didn’t enlist, he was a MINER. A simple poor miner in a not too well-off part of the UK who ended up in the army in World War 2. I don’t even know how he did, but can assume he may have been drafted as some were. Not a whole lot of stories have been passed down about him sadly, but the ones I was told were either funny, horrific, or downright heartbreaking enough that one day I WILL immortalise him in some sort of story for others because it wouldn’t seem right if they were forgotten. But I’m not going to weigh down the post with those things. It was WWII and he served in France. You can imagine what happened. He even almost had a lucky break thanks to that wonderful voice of his when someone discovered him, but he couldn’t accept the offer and eventually came home with the rest of the surviving soldiers. Then he went back to being a miner, then the miners got well and truly screwed over, and my grandad with his family to look after ended up suffering horribly from depression and the trauma of what he’d seen in the war. Knowing what mental health services were like in the 20th century I’m sure he then suffered even more tbh and so did my nanna and their children. He died on Millennium Eve and his life experiences left a lasting mark on my family.
Not everyone who is/was a veteran or soldier enlisted willingly or with enthusiasm. Not everyone who is a veteran or solider was in the US military either, even if they’re living in the US. And not all militaries are the same. If you want a good read on stuff about a veteran’s experience (though warning, there’s some sxual abuse in the content) try Heroes by Robert Cormier, which really doesn’t shy away from some of the horrors, why some people become soldiers, or how badly it affects them.
And don’t anyone who follows me ever fucking dare badmouth war veterans as if they’re all some sort of heartless walking weapons. IF YOU WOULD WILLINGLY TRIGGER A VETERAN’S PTSD ON PURPOSE, YOU’RE NOT A GOOD PERSON.

And you know what? I like fireworks and am lucky as hell my weird cat does too, but even in the UK people go stupidly overboard with fireworks at certain times, constantly scaring the hell out of vulnerable people and animals, and I just wish they would stop.

A bizarre cacophony of whooshing sounds filled the room, followed by a pulsing light which gradually turned into the shape of a bright blue motorbike. The bike skidded across the floor and the brightly-dressed woman riding it tried frantically to brake.
“Wo-wo-woah woah WOAH!”
With a small crash the bike came to a stop barely hitting a wall and the woman tumbled sideways off of it. Maybe this was a regular occurrence for her, because she salvaged the fall as a somewhat graceful roll at the last second and stood up laughing. The laughter stopped abruptly when she saw the gentleman in blue.
“Oh! Oh, I am so sorry, that was rude. Wow, you are REALLY colourful... I mean, um, oof I’m on a roll with the rudeness today... Hi! I’m the Artist, didn’t mean to crash the bike, I had the settings to random again and was expecting an open space instead of, well, indoors. Am I intruding?”
“Performance? Oh, are you in the arts too?” the Artist asked happily. “That’s great! I’m more one for creating than performing most of the time, but I do sing, and... actually who am I kidding, I end up acting a lot anyway, just to stay safe instead of on a stage.”
Artie fumbled through her bag and pulled out a sketchbook with a bright lavender cover. She used the little device from earlier to wave over the front of it with a buzzing sound, and the word “Etheria” appeared across it in bold fancy letters.
“Right then, I’m ready to see this world! Did you say the Frost Kingdom was a good bet? How might be best to get there, or would you like a go on the motorbike?”
Instead of rolling dice, buy a copious amount of Chinese fortune cookies. Every time you need to roll, read aloud your fortune and let your Dungeon Master decide what it means.

I am so sorry again, your... highness?” She gave an awkward little curtsey, then masked the embarrassment with a more cheerful smile. “Well, not every day I’m in the presence of royalty! And such friendly royalty at that. Does that mean the princesses are relatives of yours? And... did you just say magical?”
Don't worry darling, there's no hard feelings, unfortunately though I am not related to the other princesses, they run their own little kingdoms all over etheria, and yes I did.
They have these things called runestones, the princesses are supposedly connected to them and use their magic, she ra also counts as a princess, her runestone is much smaller then the rest though. It's in her little sword
“So this She Ra is a warrior princess? Wow, sounds like there’s a lot of royalty on this planet. And MAGIC, I love it!” Artie bounced excitedly and reached over the side of her bike where she unstrapped a messenger bag covered in colourful embroidered patches. “I have to see the rest of this place, got a new sketchbook just waiting to be used! I... don’t suppose you have any recommendations for places to go?” She looked to Peekablue with a shy smile.

I haven't been out much recently but I suppose I could use my farsight to look for the more beautiful looking areas on etheria, I hear the frost kingdom is lovely around this type of year
“Farsight? You can see things... really far away?” Though confused, the Artist looked very excited by the idea. “Wow, kind of wish I could do that. So you could see anywhere you wanted, even across galaxies? Oh wow, like the blue-white fires of Rigel, or beautiful beaches on Florana, or you could see how my friends are doing! Or-”
She trailed off, seemingly met with a sad thought, and became quiet for a long moment before the smile returned. “Sorry, got a bit carried away.”
