Google Office Going Green

Green features coming to Google's office in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Google, the world’s pre-eminent Internet search engine, continues its quest to go green. The company announced this week that its office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is about to undergo a remodeling that will install several new environmentally friendly features.

Built in 2007, the five-story McKinley Towne Center is Google’s main office in Michigan. Among the new green building additions will be an array of solar panels as well as an outdoor green space, both located on the rooftop. In the basement a greenhouse is going to be built that will be used to grow vegetables for the foods sold in the building’s café.

Construction crews are expected to begin working on the remodel sometime this Spring.

Google employees will also get a free shuttle service to work to cut down pollution, courtesy of two new vehicles the company purchased from Zipcar, a car-sharing service provider.

Google and McKinley, its landlord in Ann Arbor, will share the costs of the project but have not disclosed the total expected costs of the remodel. However, Albert Berriz, the CEO of McKinley, did say that he expected it to take at least nine to eleven years for the pair to recoup their losses, including the money that will be saved by using the solar panels to supply part of Google’s energy needs.

The Navy has caused a small uproar over its decision to name a cargo ship currently under construction in San Diego, California, after union activist Cesar Chavez. Chavez was a Navy veteran and a noted civil rights leader.

General Dynamics Nassco, the shipbuilding firm in charge of construction, suggested the name in honor of its Latino workforce. Nearly a third of the population of San Diego is of Hispanic descent.

The ship is being built in the prominently Latino neighborhood of San Diego called Barrio Logan.

Republican congressman Duncan Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, slammed the decision as being biased and unfair to military war heroes.

"Naming a ship after César Chávez goes right along with other recent decisions by the Navy that appear to be more about making a political statement than upholding the Navy's history and tradition," said Hunter during a press conference.

According to a report published on Monday, the China Construction Bank and twelve other prominent Chinese companies are among the top 100 most valuable brands in the world. The annual list was compiled by the global brands agency Millward Brown.

Each year for the past six years, the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list has ranked the most recognizable and successful branding and marketing campaigns. The overall value of these top 100 brands rose by 17 percent since last year’s report, reaching a record $2.4 trillion.

Dish Network plans to close hundreds of Blockbuster stores1223Share

Hundreds of Blockbuster Video stores will be shutting their doors soon. The video rental company is in the process of being taken over by the Dish Network and major changes are coming.

The Dish Network, the second largest provider of satellite TV in the US, purchased the rights to Blockbuster Video and all of its properties for about $320 million in an auction. Last month, Blockbuster was given permission by a bankruptcy court to sell off its remaining assets in an attempt to reduce the $1 billion debt the company had built up.

The Dish Network filed documents with bankruptcy court over the weekend listing which Blockbuster stores it intends to keep open. The deal is expected to be finalized sometime in the next few weeks, giving the satellite TV provider control over the leases of almost 2,000 properties currently run by the Dallas-based Blockbuster Video.

Blockbuster currently owns 1,751 stores in the US, but Dish Network only plans to keep about 600 of them open. That leaves over a 1,000 former Blockbuster properties that won’t have their leases renewed.

So far, Dish Network hasn't indicated that it will extend the leases of the multi-floor corporate headquarters in downtown Dallas or the 850,000 square-foot distribution center in McKinney, Texas .

At its peak Blockbuster operated about 4,000 stores in the US.
