Sherlock Rewatch
THE EMPTY HEARSE
John at Battersea before he realizes he’s talking to Irene. This exchange struck me especially hard today. The whole key to the mystery is in everything John says in this moment. He’s worried. He doesn’t understand. Sherlock’s behaviour looks like heartbreak. It is (but it’s not for her). It’s perpetual. It’s constant. (As long as John’s known him.)
Taking these screencaps, I was blown away by how difficult it is to get an image of John’s face until that final moment when he sees her. He turns in every direction possible to avoid facing forward, distracted by the nothing of the room around him. “He does all that anyway” is framed by a gap in the wall / equipment; there’s an implied third party viewer, who of course is revealed to be Sherlock. He sees John clearly in this moment; John sees nothing but Irene.
Jesus! Think how intense this was for Sherlock.
He knows he’s been acting strangely. He probably knows he’s been sad. But I bet he didn’t know why.
Then, suddenly, John–who knows him better than anyone, who makes him so overwhelmed and confused and sentimental, who understands feelings–names the sadness “heartbreak.”
I would run away too.
Oh my god. I love this idea so much. It would certainly explain the next scene and why sherlock is so shaky on his feet, doesn’t it?
yikes, yes. :(
I am reblogging again. Just did it a few moments ago, but I am doing it again because this is the best explanation of this scene I have ever seen.
It’s really nice to see this post making the rounds again! We’ve all said this a million times before, but what is a scene like this about, if not johnlock?

I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE this!!!
I love how John’s just there waiting for his sweetie to be ready to go.
Hey honey.
The British Government himself is so done.
