Haggling in D&D: Old-School Edition
Use the rules outlined in this post but instead of using 5th edition style Charisma checks make a Reaction Roll.
A result of Friendly means a 20% markup in the player’s favor.
A result of Indifferent means a 10% markup in the player’s favor.
A result of Neutral means that the item is available at its base price.
A result of Unfriendly means a 10% markup against the player.
A result of Hostile is equivalent to a critical failure.
Perhaps in Pathfinder a player could use Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate? Critically passing or failing the check would change the shopkeeper’s reaction depending upon which skill was used.
Absolutely! The way I’m thinking is:
Bluff - You thought you tricked them into giving you a good bargain but you were the one who got tricked, either selling you a faulty item or buying an item from you for real cheap when it actually concealed some greater magical property.
Diplomacy - The shopkeeper takes your good nature for gullibility and offers you a deal with an insane markup (like 50%).
Intimidate - Not only do you fail at bullying the shopkeeper into a deal, they secretly send armed thugs after you to teach you a lesson about how to conduct trade.
I like these! I’m thinking the following for a critical pass, in addition to a one-time heavy discount:
Bluff - The shopkeeper is convinced you are much greater and powerful than you actually are, and you receive a small but permanent discount at their shop (10% or so) as long as you maintain your guise. They may still try to slip something of bad quality at you, as some merchants are fond of tricking nobles.
Diplomacy - Your fairness and friendliness earn you the respect of the shopkeeper, and you and your party are always guaranteed goods of high quality. You will never be purposefully sold a sub-par item, and your purchase may come with a little extra as thanks for your patronage (a quiver and 10 arrows for buying a bow, a potion of Cure Light Wounds with a more expensive potion purchase), but never a permanent discount.
Intimidate - The shopkeeper and their security now give you a wide berth. This particular shop will now sell you items at a permanently moderate discount (20%), and only items of good quality, but your reputation is now known at nearby shops due to the gossip of the local thugs. Other shopkeepers will sell you good items at a fair price, but are no longer eligible for haggling with.
I tried to keep these mostly good, but with some sort of downside going forward. It’s no fun if a crit pass gives you good results forever, but it is fun if it gives you an advantage going forward when dealing with the same NPCs.
Oh, another thing. How would this be used in Dungeon World? I’m having trouble coming up with something besides a charisma check.
For Dungeon World I’d definitely look at making it a custom move of its own. However, in keeping it in line with Dungeon World’s philosophy of something interesting happening on each roll, no matter the result, I’d probably make the move carry consequences on a 7-9, so only on a 10+ would the character get exactly what they want for cheaper with no hidden costs.
When you try to talk down the price of something you’re buying, roll+Cha. On a hit, the seller offers you a reasonable discount. On a 7-9 the GM also chooses one of the following:
The item comes with a hidden cost. The GM will tell you what when appropriate.
No one in this market will do business with you again during your current visit.
On a miss, you can still buy the item at market price, but the GM still chooses one of the options.
I’m not really quite happy with that, though. Needs at least another option, and I feel failure should have more of a sting to it.
Hmmm….
When you try to talk down the price of something you’re buying, roll+Cha:
On a critical hit (natural 12), the seller offers you a high discount, plus the item comes with a hidden bonus that the GM will reveal when appropriate.
On a hit, the seller offers you a reasonable discount.
On a 7-9, the seller offers you a reasonable discount, but all is not as it seems. Choose one of the following:
The item comes with a hidden cost. The GM will tell you what when appropriate.
The other merchants in the market witness your action, and do not approve. No one in this market will do business with you again during your current visit.
The merchant gives in this time, but never again. You can no longer haggle with this merchant.
On a miss, choose one of the following:
The seller offers you the item at a markup, plus choose 1 option from the above list.
The seller offers you the item at market price, but you must choose 2 from the above list.
I like it! All I would do to change it is get rid of the miss result. I just realized after typing up my move that having specific things happening on a miss goes against one of the core rules of Dungeon World, being that on 6- the GM tells you what happens (i.e. they make a move). Both of the options on a miss already work as GM moves, i.e. give them an opportunity with a cost.
We first featured this awesome Doctor Who-themed chess set created by Dutch artist Emmi Visser, aka DeviantArtist EldalinSkywalker, back in 2011. It features the Tenth Doctor and Professor River Song as king and queen facing off against The Master and Lady Cassandra.
Today we discovered that Visser sculpted a second Doctor Who-themed chess set. This geektastic set features the Eleventh Doctor and Professor River Song defended by Amy and Amelia as bishops, Eyedrive Rory and Rory the Roman s knights, TARDIS rooks, and a row of pawns shaped like Dorium’s head. They’re facing off against the Dream Lord and Madam Kovarian as king and queen with The Silence as bishops, Headless Monks as knights, twin Pandoricas for rooks, and a terrifying row of Weeping Angels as pawns.
Both beautifully detailed sets were completely handmade using polymer clay.
Visit EldalinSkywalker’s DeviantArt gallery to check out more of Emmi Visser’s awesomely geeky art projects, including an amazing Game of Thrones-themed chess set.
