“Oh.” She said simply, curiosity sated in the matter for now. But she couldn’t help feeling like her inquiries bothered Ana. “Do you mind, that I ask you about it? I don’t mean to be rude or offensive. I just like to know, is all. But if it bothers you, just let me know and I’ll stop of course.”

Ana drew in a breath, and sighed. “You can ask me about now, or recently. Questions about the past... make me uneasy.”

Ana drained her glass, glancing around briefly before focusing on him and tilting her head. “Want to get out of here?”

“At first, I hardly knew what I was doing. I was hungry and afraid and confused, and feeding was entirely instinct-driven. I think I may have panicked in the aftermath, but the feeding itself... no. It’s second nature.”

She smiled slightly, a small, thin-lipped gesture that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

    “If there was time, trust me,      I’d hire somebody else.”

Ana turned away, scanning the room with a kind of fondness leaking into her expression.

    “Mothers do. For their children.  Employers      sometimes do.  A friend who plans a      surprise despite knowing they’d rather be      alone that night.”

“Au contraire mon ami.” He said, his chest puffing up a little. “A little show never hurt anyone, and much of what I can do translates so well into the bedroom. You’d be surprised.”

She cocked a single eyebrow, and a sudden smile split her face. “I am so rarely surprised, monsieur. Are you willing to back up your statement?”
