Not ordinarily the type content I would post but I love this image of the men smoking in front of their text. For some it may have been their last smoke.
The caption reads: Pipes, such as this meerschaum model belonging to Stephen H. Leonard of the 3rd Massachusettes Volunteer Calvary, were among the most treasured luxurie, as evidenced by the photo of Gerald Fitz-John Porter’s staff bivouacked during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. “most of the soldiers with whom I was thrown … smoked tobacco as a constant habit”, one Alambama infantryman recalled. “In those days I estemmed such indulgence next to necessity, and an inexpressible delight”.
