That one.”

“Bruh. And turn on ABBA?” He says, briefly considering it. Him and Clark had actually concocted a cover of Ironic a few years prior, that consisted of them changing every bad thing in the song to something good. An old man turned 98, he won the lottery... and lived the next day! Surely it had the potential to become a crowd favorite, but he’s looking to melt faces and possibly even gain fans. And, in that regard, ABBA is the way of the world. “C’mooon. Vibe it. Really really dig on it. Embrace your inner Meryl Streep.”

Mixers were weird, at least Dottie thought so. Make no mistake, she adored meeting people, always–– but perched on a barstool, nursing a flat wine spritzer via a fluorescent plastic straw wasn’t exactly Dot’s idea of a good time. Besides, she was chummy with a few of the bands already. She willed herself not to be a sourpuss, remaining in a bored stupor would kill her mood and ultimately, her performance later on. Instead, Dot  removed her straw and reluctantly gulped down the contents of her glass, turning to the person beside her to break the ice.

“Hey, do you like to dance?”

Between the music playing, the amount of conversations happening around him, and his general level of lit-ness, the sensory overload is getting real. And yet, at the source of the question, he’s glancing over his shoulder, offering a smile and a casual shrug of his shoulders at the sight of Dottie-- an angel, a fav, a legend. “Yeah, dude. I’m freaky good at it. I’onno. You might get a lil’ jelly.”

Remember when Charley said she was going to keep it cool and sober at the mixer? Yeah well, her nerves got the better of her. Because it’s a fucking mixer, and the competition is all here, and sadly her other half is not. So she’s nervous, sweating like a sauna and downing shots like it’s nobody’s business. Easy to say, Charley is wasted, and a drunk Charley isn’t the easiest one to converse with. 

She’s leaning against the wall, making flirty eyes with someone from across the room, before she gestures for them to come closer. “Hey good-looking, wanna dance?” The blonde has a vague idea that this is probably not a good thing, but consequences were meant for the morning, on a full stomach of greasy foods and sunglasses.

At this point in the night, after many a drink (he meant to be tallying them on his hand but forgot around number 5) and dozens of hits off his weed pen, he’s fully ready to pull off the wettest Wet Brain cover of Mamma Mia by ABBA that anyone’s ever seen. However, that doesn’t mean distraction isn’t settling into his bloodstream alongside his other bad decisions, and once he spots Charley urging him over, pretty much all his focus is obliterated.

“You are,” he says with a doofy, drunken grin, hardly standing up straight as he wanders over to her. He sets his almost-finished drink down, his hair a step away from being stuck to his forehead in sweat, holding onto one of her hands and wrapping an arm around her waist, as if they’re about to waltz across a pristine ballroom. “Have you been here this whole time? I’m fuckin’ blind.”

Dior scanned the offender up and down. It’s just Connor, who is one of the most tolerable of Wet Brain, which is arguably like being the tolerable Kardashian. Connor was Kourtney. “I save it for when I really wanna use it,” Dior assured. They lowered their guard. “You know if Wet Brain utilized that tunnel vision for actually practicing their songs, y’all might have a fighting chance at Battle of the Bands.” As they teased, Dior turned to look at some more records.

“Woooow,” he says, going along with the jokey manner of the conversation despite the fact that they’re 100% correct. The problem is, every member has their own little unique tunnel vision, forgetting that they all metaphorically have to be in the same car if they’re gonna get anywhere. “Okay, when you use it though, can I get, like, a 5 second warning? Maybe 10? Just ‘cause we’re best friends, obvs.”

the cool toned light beams dance across the walls. music blaring through the speakers as bodies sway to some semblance of the beat. only an hour into the night meant that being good is getting trickier. reyna is stoked to perform, but damn she’s too sober to be around her favorite bands. with a groan, she approaches the empty bar looking for the bartender. “do you think mark will notice if i sneak back there for a bottle of whiskey?” she hums asking the other.

“hm, not enough info to say,” he says, eyes scanning the room for mark’s presence as he takes a hit off his pen, feelin’ like a spy kid. he’s less concerned with her urge to steal and more caught up on her drink of choice-- unfortunately, all whiskey tastes like fireball to him after overindulging in it the entire summer post-graduation, but he can’t find any reason not to support such an escapade. “i can keep watch for ya, man, but it’s a risky move... i’ll go halfsies with you on a couple rounds of shots?”

Max is no stranger to the classic Whiskey and Coke, but this one tastes particularly strong. Sloshing it around rather carelessly, he observed it. “Do you think they forgot to put the cola in? Every sip, I see a clearer vision of God. I’m not even going to remember how to play bass in a couple hours.”

“A lil’ heavy handed, huh,” he nods towards the drink, shaking his head with a chuckle. “Mamma Mia. What does God look like? Alanis Morissette?” He asks, the straw missing his mouth for a good few seconds as he aims for a sip. “I bet if you channel her hard enough she’ll give you the God power to slap it out. One hand in my pocket and the other one slappin’ the bass.”

wet brain is no stranger to doing covers wildly out of their league, and are even more familiar with performing at some level of intoxication, so connor’s not too worried about the competitive part of the evening. but it’s not as if he would be anyway-- he’s just happy to be there. the undrgrnd, with its charm and lack of any regularly colored lightbulbs, is certainly a place he’d be cool with hanging around at more often-- they’ve had actual bands play there, with, like, fanbases and official spotifies. it all seems so far fetched even though he’s literally here.

he’s in a supremely good mood, ordering a third slow gin fizz at the bar and nodding over to the other person stood there. “you ready to rumble, dude?” he says with a doofy grin, a hearty smear of glitter under both eyes. “i feel like i might shit my pants. but, like, in a good way. that good ol’ rollercoaster feeling.”

here’s the plan for if he somehow manages to get his shit together: move to nyc and start wildly auditioning for whatever roles he can get his hands on, build up a reel notable enough to be able to audition for snl. he doesn’t get in, but he starts a music-based stand up comedy schtick and after a few more years of perfecting joke songs he auditions again and becomes the second youngest cast member in history. gains a fan base called “the roth stars” and starts being able to produce his own movies. connor roth takes over the film industry as we know it and has a very prosperous career.
