Just some Licorice Tribe and Oozeling stuff:

-Love the idea that appeasement rituals for the Licorice Sea/Licorice monsters originated in the Licorice Tribe. To add to this, the most effective version is the Licorice Tribe version.

-The Licorice Tribe is much safer around Licorice Oozelings than any other cookie. But they are not immune to attacks from the creatures. Oozelings think they're also Oozelings and to some degree know the tribe can stop them with their magic. In whatever thoughts might exist in a Licorice Oozeling's mind, the licorice cookies are simply not usually worth the effort of fighting and they get benefits (free food) if they help the tribe.

-on the above, they're not domesticated, but they're able to understand the concept that the Licorice Tribe isn't trying to hurt them and can work beside them.

-Music was a big part of the tribe and as a result... Oozelings fuckin love a good song. This has good and bad potential imo. Good bc if you start playing a tune or singing a song, they will not immediately kill you. Bad bc if you play anywhere near the Licorice Sea, you will attract every oozeling in the area.

-oozelings tend to retain behaviors and characteristics of the first living thing they consume. Usually this is fish or a smaller oozeling, maybe an animal. This is why Rice Roll Oozeling in the Darkest Days AU acts like a dog btw.

-turns out oozelings little hoarders. They will steal things they like and pile them up at the bottom of the Licorice Sea. Many of these items came from the Licorice Tribe.

-if an oozeling decides it likes a tribe member, it'll be their best friend. Most are avoidant like cats tho

So we're putting a big ol' target on Licorice's back in the Darkest Days AU but I'm not sure who should be the one to do it.

MOST LIKELY Dark Choco makes sense to me. While under the influence of the Dark Dream he winds up sleepwalking right to the Citadel gates where he's then taken in. (It is very awkward but Dark Cacao is very happy to have his son back.)

Maybe in an attempt to prove himself useful, and since he was planning to pass on this info anyway, Dark Choco shares what he knows about Licorice controlling the Oozelings and how he suspects they are related to the Dark Dream.

HOWEVER Affogato is also a choice here. Mind you, he's also on a collision course with his old kingdom. He doesn't receive as warm a welcome as Dark Choco would, but he would definitely barter his knowledge of Licorice's power over the Oozelings for better conditions, treatment, and safety if at all possible.

Ultimately either one of them could spill the beans on his powers and that would make the search for the remaining COD members even more important. I just don't know which I prefer. What do y'all think? I do kinda lean towards Choco a bit bc I want him and his dad to reunite safely.f

Oof. I feel like the most insane part about all the Darkest Days AU stuff I have been yapping about is that I've really only been talking about the first 'act' there's just... So much to sort out.

There's like, two main events that fully kickstart my Darkest Days AU. The Licorice Sea Expedition and the Seance Gone Wrong.

If you've seen me yap about it, you probably know that the Licorice Sea Expedition is a diplomatic collaboration between the Dark Cacao Kingdom (with much convincing) and the Creme Republic. The goal is to take a submarine beneath the Licorice Sea and try to learn more about the licorice oozelings that plague the kingdom, possibly even find out where they're coming from exactly if possible.

And the Seance Gone Wrong was an attempt by Pomegranate Cookie, who decides to let Licorice help her, to reach out to Dark Enchantress' soul in order to find a way to bring her back. She hadn't involved Licorice until this time, wanting to do it herself. They do contact... Something. But it definitely wasn't DE. After Licorice forcibly cuts off their connection to this thing, he begins to experience the Dark Dream.

Since I already did basic bios for Dragon Moray Cookie and Licorice Cream Cookie, I'll do Vanilla Drop here.

Vanilla Drop Cookie.

A dedicated marine biologist, she was chosen for the Licorice Sea Expedition for her expertise in deep sea ecology and deep sea diving. It was her who suggested her intern, Licorice Cream Cookie, for her position as well. Though quite harsh and stern, she wants only to complete their expedition safely.

And also a bonus comic.

This particular oozeling also has a name and it is "Rice Roll Oozeling". After a rice roll cake hound Licorice Cream Cookie had as a child that got eaten by an oozeling. Since Rice Roll Oozeling only began to follow her after losing her cake hound, she comforted herself by claiming it assimilated her hounds loyalty and love for her... It really do be like a puppy too.

Dragon Moray Cookie (he/they)-

A young but proud naval captain of the Creme Republic who aided in tests for submersibles. Due to their experience piloting submarines, they were chosen for a diplomatic aid trip to make the first ever trip beneath the Licorice Sea.

He keeps a licorice swirl charm gifted to him by Licorice Cream Cookie, whom he feels protective of. He finds the spark under all that skittishness admirable. He lets her confide in him, basking in the attention.

Licorice Cream Cookie (she/they)-

The timid intern of Vanilla Drop Cookie, an upcoming marine biologist in the Creme Republic. Despite being subject to constant bullying and rejection from her peers for her refusal to give up her tribe's beliefs, she is very dedicated to her pursuit of marine biology. Ultimately, she wants to learn as much as she can to return home and use her knowledge to solve the crisis of the Licorice Sea's monsters plaguing the rest of her kingdom. Because of this and her Licorice Tribe heritage, she was chosen to accompany Vanilla Drop Cookie and Dragon Moray Cookie on the Licorice Sea Expedition.

They find Dragon Moray Cookie a bit intimidating at first. But as he was one of the only cookies in the crew to accept her protective licorice swirl pendants, she felt a newfound respect for him. His protection of her soon makes him a confidant of hers. Sometimes Licorice Cream Cookie shares her concerns on where the rest of her people went. How the other cookie her age is doing in his studies. The sudden growth of horns and a tail she never had before.

Context on what the Dark Dream is for those who don't follow my unhinged ramblings.

Anyway, this concept is now an AU I call "Darkest Days". Now let's talk about the Cookies of Darkness.

-takes place some time after the BY episodes ended of course. So Licorice, Pomegranate, Brute, PM, and Agar Agar are definitely all together.

-Pomegranate obviously isn't doing so well. She's currently in a depressed slump bc the love of her life got Thanos snapped. Licorice is basically the one keeping them somewhat in line and alive despite the nonstop complaining. Most likely she became obsessed with the idea of bringing Dark Enchantress back and is trying to find a way to reach her, partly convinced DE didn't die for real and is instead sealed away again.

-Pomegranate obviously acts more hostile towards him while she's grieving, and it takes much longer than it should have to notice something was wrong with Licorice. She's probably a bit shocked by how much she cares when she realizes he's not doing well.

-honestly, she didn't pick up on it until he went missing for a day only to drag himself back to their camp/base exhausted and thoroughly freaked out. Though Licorice doesn't tell her anything, she learns through the others that he's been having increasingly frequent nightmares on top of the stress from trying to take care of everything and everyone.

-The ones to pull her from her funk are PM and Agar Agar though. Both rely on/adore her and are extremely distressed that she's been ignoring them and that Licorice isn't okay. She won't admit she cares for Licorice, but them? She'll admit it to herself.

-She isn't giving up on DE, but the current situation is not great so she's basically forced to shelve it. Honestly, she probably assumes Licorice is just sick and burnt out from all the stuff that happened and trying to take care of everyone.

-Licorice quickly develops some sort of fear of sleeping as the sleepwalking gets worse. I wouldn't say he develops insomnia, because he can and wants desperately to sleep. But he simply won't let himself until he passes out bc he's too afraid of where he'll wake up next time.

-I'd love to see something about Brute's loyalty here tbh. Because like, he really does stick by Licorice.

-Agar Agar doesn't like Licorice only because of his fighting with Pomegranate. But she doesn't like seeing him constantly on the verge of a breakdown and unable to sleep. Neither her nor Poison Mushroom understand what's wrong with Licorice. Just that he doesn't nap with them anymore and that Pomegranate says he's sick.

-Pomegranate is genuinely scared when she gets Licorice to rest only for him to vanish again. When she finds him wandering in a trance of sort on a straight line.

-Ideally, Darkest Days AU involves Licorice getting taken by the Living Abyss. Pomegranate takes this horribly, unable to do anything and still stuck on DE's loss and now Licorice.

Oh my god, the amount of things that could be done with this

The amount of angst one could make with this

The amount of bonding that could be portrayed with this, with the current Cookies of Darkness no longer having Dark Enchantress Cookie to follow, and being forced to rely more on each other's judgement rather than the one who was the reason they all became a group in the first place.

The way there could potentially be a moment calling back to that one moment during the Creme Republic story when the Cookies of Darkness outright declared they aren't friends, and merely work together for a common goal. The way that could start to shift to more mutual bonds(even if they wouldn't dare to call it friendship out loud) as they're forced to work together without Dark Enchantress Cookie's orders as guidance.

The way they'd get to know how each other are when they aren't trying to prove themselves to Dark Enchantress Cookie, but are forced to instead figure out how to survive together without her.

And that's with just specifically Licorice, Pomegranate, Brute, PM, and Agar Agar! That's without involving Affogato, or Bat-Cat!

Affogato, who might entirely leave without Dark Enchantress Cookie to suck up to, but who might also decide to stick with who's left just for the sake of survival until he can find someone else to serve his faux sweetness to. Who would know more than most of the other Cookies of Darkness, how the Dark Cacao Kingdom sees the Licorice Sea, and the potential of, due to being from the kingdom as well, Affogato being plagued with nightmares similar to Licorice, minus the sleepwalking/trance.

Bat-Cat, who would 1000% stay by Licorice's side to the end of time, and who, after each sleepwalking episode, could help lead him back to the rest of the group so that he doesn't stay lost. Who would be one of the first, if not the first period to notice Licorice acting different, and who might point it out only to be ignored. Who could scout out ahead while the group are on the move, to make sure they wouldn't walk right into danger. It could even potentially make sure that Licorice doesn't fall into any pits or run into anything whenever the trances happen, and it could point out how weird it is that that's happening before anyone else understands it's happening.

Gosh, the amount of potential is insane.

I love every bit of this but ye basically.

Bat-Cat would be an MVP here bc it's the first and most concerned one at the start. It's Licorice's best friend, his closest confidant. When everyone else is brushing off the sleeplessness and nightmares he suddenly developed, Bat-Cat is the one to actually hear what they are and how it's scaring Licorice.

Licorice and Bat-Cat both getting a moment to shine in this brings me joy. They don't get that much(especially Bat-Cat, who wasn't even mentioned the last time the Cookies of Darkness were actually involved in the crk canon, as far as I'm aware), and something like this would be easy to put more focus on both of them.

I'm just imagining Bat-Cat's perspective of this now, oh my gosh. IT notices the cookie it's closest to start struggling with things that everyone else keeps brushing off and ignoring, and if it tries to insist the others take it more seriously, then they might assume Licorice told it to, and not take it seriously still. It would have to face how ignorant everyone else is to what's happening right in front of them, because most of them don't care NEARLY as much as Bat-Cat would. Brute would care, but most of the others either wouldn't care, or wouldn't understand.

Pomegranate wouldn't care, for sure. She wasn't fond of Licorice before, and even if they're forced to rely on each other more now, that doesn't mean she knows how he was before any better. I imagine she probably just ignored him, most of the time, unless she couldn't.

Affogato probably wouldn't care. He's more likely to be focusing on where the heck he's gonna go next, since there's no more Dark Enchantress Cookie, and there's no way he'd consider going back to Dark Cacao Cookie after his clear-as-day betrayal. If anything, Affogato might just get annoyed at Bat-Cat insisting Licorice isn't doing okay.

Agar Agar might not entirely understand, but not being that close to Licorice, I doubt she'd care enough to try to until she actually gets annoyed about how Licorice starts acting different. And even then, that might take a while.

Poison Mushroom would definitely care, but it's doubtful they'd understand. They might be able to grasp that Licorice isn't like himself, but they definitely won't be able to understand why that is, once it's noticed. What they understand, they won't be able to do anything about either, since they're just a kid, and especially so being a kid who's known to not be that coherent. If they say anything about Licorice acting weird, nobody would likely pay any mind to that!

Brute is one of the only ones other than Bat-Cat who would care about Licorice enough to listen, and who could actually understand everything that's happening. And sure, Brute might not be taken seriously as far as noticing things go, but once Bat-Cat's pointed out what's happening, Brute can sure as heck make enough of a scene to get others to actually pay attention.

Brute and Bat-Cat tag-teaming everyone else(Or at least everyone else who could understand) until they take what's going on with Licorice seriously, and try to figure out a solution.

Pomegranate being annoyed about the distraction from 'bringing Dark Enchantress back' at first, until she's forced to realize they can't continue like this, because Licorice was holding the group together more than she realized.

Affogato hemming and hawing about it because he doesn't actually care about most of the group, but relenting for the sake of survival.

Poison Mushroom potentially trying to use their shroomies to help Licorice sleep, and Bat-Cat and Brute not being able to get them to fully understand that getting to sleep isn't the only problem.

Yes, yes, yes! Bat-Cat would probably try to help Licorice itself first and foremost, not yet aware of just how bad it actually is. Because lbr, constant nightmares are kind of a given after the whole war thing went down. It wouldn't realize that it's not just that until the sleepwalking starts, which I assume would be the major tip off for it that this is wrong. The time ng on this is everything too, bc literally all the COD are messed up in some way from this. So it makes Licorice's condition look pretty mid compared to, like, Pomegranate's desperate attempts to contact or revive DE. Bat-Cat also would be seeing the effects of sleep deprivation too, since Licorice tries to avoid sleeping after a certain point. To everyone else, it's not that bad and a lot of them are also going through similar shit. "He's an adult, he'll be fine" kinda mentality.

Affogato is probably the other most interesting one here because if he was with them, then he would be experiencing similar things to Licorice and not know it but might be able to piece together that whatever is wrong with him, isn't a one off thing. However long it takes him to connect the dots depends on how much he tries to interact with Licorice and learn about whatever is wrong with them. Of course Affogato does not care for him, he's simply doing it to protect himself. And if Affogato isn't with them, he may eventually piece together that it involves the licorice monsters and he does know a cookie with powers over the monsters.

Now, the question is how far does this reach? Because I like to imagine as the Living Abyss slowly awakens , its power and influence would spread incrementally. Starting with Licorice Tribe cookies (the ones it wants) to cookies with personal ties to the tribe (friends or lovers outside the village) to any cookie who interacted with it recently, and eventually to the entire kingdom. Maybe further, like, say, cookies with Dark Cacao Kingdom lineage.

This means even Brute, Pomegranate, and the kids might soon be victims.

YEAHHHHHH, I LOVE THAT

Literally jumping around in joy about that, oh my gosh. The idea of it being progressively more cookies struggling with it is amazing.

And, well, obviously Licorice would be one of the first, being from the Licorice Tribe himself, but the idea of it potentially spreading with time is awesome.

Imagine if the nightmares just got more vivid the longer a cookie' been having them? Vague flashes at first, turning into blurry scenes, with muffled noises if any at all, only to get progressively more and more easy to make out the details, to the point that it starts being hard to tell it apart from reality.

And there's little doubt in my mind that Bat-Cat's known Licorice for the longest. I personally like the idea that Licorice's necromancy is the reason Bat-Cat exists in the first place, which would mean Bat-Cat would've known him for it's entire existence. Would that make Bat-Cat a lot closer to the start of the victims of nightmares? If it can even dream at all?

Bat-Cat being made mostly of bones might also mean it wouldn't need to sleep or dream though. I feel like it would like sleeping anyways, but it doesn't necessarily need to, which is an important distinction. Great for having someone to keep watch, if nobody else can, but not necessarily reliable at doing that if it decides it'd rather go off and do it's own thing for a while. And if Bat-Cat *is* able to dream when it chooses to sleep, then it could also potentially experience the nightmares that Licorice has to deal with firsthand, and understand even better than it already would be able to.

There's SO MUCH that could be done with this, oh my gosh.

Thinking about Darkest Days Dark Cacao and Dark Choco y'all. They make me sick.

I imagine one day, Dark Cacao is checking on the guards and Watchers assigned to the Citadel gate. They're briefing a new group of sleepwalkers, trying to calm the panicked cookies. But aside from that, it's... Quiet. And soon, another one comes into view. A lone cookie obscured in the snow walking straight towards them.

He recognizes Dark Choco immediately. How could he not? He's been waiting for this day. For his son to come home. Sure, he still has mixed feelings towards him, but the relief is palpable. His son is alive. His son is home. His son is... Acting odd. The worry quickly crushes any joy he felt. For a moment, the unsteady, clumsy steps, the stiff posture, it sends him back to the night he'd first lost Dark Choco.

But here, he can clearly see Dark Choco's eyes are closed. He's sleepwalking... Oh witches, he's sleepwalking. His son didn't do that. Not in his memory at least. The realization steals his breath away. Whatever is affecting his people this time, this Dark Dream, has got it's claws on his son. His son, who he just got back. Who finally came home.

He reaches out to guide him safely (like he should have done before) into the Citadel, only for Dark Choco to startle awake just like all the rest. Dark Choco is confused, shocked, and as his good eye finally focuses enough to see Dark Cacao, fear flashes through it. He tries to slink off, muttering apologies, guilt twisting his features. And that hurts.

All the confidence Dark Cacao had built up just for this moment, all the things he promised he'd say, vanishes in this moment. He can't say anything, but the moment he realizes Dark Choco is about to run... He drapes his cape over Dark Choco. The only thing he can think to say is, "It's okay." Or something along those lines, he doesn't really know. He just wanted to make it clear that his son would be safe. From himself, from the world outside, from this strange dreaming plague, Dark Cacao doesn't know. But he will keep Dark Choco safe, do right by him for once in his life.

Fuck I love this AU.

A bunch of questions for your Darkest Days au, fair warning there is quite a few :

How hidden is Sea Fairy cookie's blindspot? Is it big enough for the Liquorice Sea to be able to take a whole kingdom or does ot have to be selective and uses the Dark Dream as a sort of selection process? What happens to the cookies who successfully make their way to an oozling or the sea? Are they absorbed into said sea or do they get put where the other Liquorice tribe members are? Does the Dark Dream only affect those in the Cacao kingdom, what happens to cookies whom used to live there but have left the kingdom for other residences? Do they also sleepwalk back like Liquorice or is he a special case? What happens when the Sea gets Liquorice back? Does it stop taking or does it stop having restraint and takes everyone? Why is it holding back? Is it a power problem? Is it because of Sea Fairy cookie ? Is it taking cookies to tip the balance in their favor? What will happen to the rest of the CoD when Liquorice is taken, will the Sea go for them and the rest /former CoD members?

Oooh hell ye. I'll separate these so it's easier to answer them.

On the blind spot, it's technically not hidden in the same sense as you'd hide an item from sight. It's very much out in the open and reachable physically, but the Living Abyss itself causes distortions in reality that make it difficult if not impossible to sense where or even what it is guarding for her. Her connection to the sea becomes disrupted by it's presence, basically acting as a barrier for itself and places under its strong influence.

As for it hiding an entire kingdom? It would probably not work in time since the blind spot is basically where it's lair is. Maybe given enough time it could. But the timeline I have moves quicker once Licorice is taken by it.

Ultimately, I'm planning to take the Living Abyss name very literal. An Abyss refers to something bottomless or endless, or the chaos of old. The Living Abyss in this AU is meant to fully embody this in its own way, so that's ultimately why I wanted legendary Guardians like Sea Fairy and Moonlight to not be capable of interfering with it.

The Dark Dream itself is it's way of weakening cookies so they become more susceptible to it's influence. It's ultimately making itself known to drive it's victims to madness. And if you know any Lovecraftian horror, then you might be realizing that the Licorice Tribe is meant to be an allusion to the Deep Ones or “fish people of Innsmouth” from Lovecraft’s “The Shadow over Innsmouth”.

What happens to the cookies who successfully make their way to an oozling or the sea? Are they absorbed into said sea or do they get put where the other Liquorice tribe members are?

Generally, most cookies who make it to an oozeling or the Licorice Sea will die. Drowned and crumbled in the sea or assimilated by an oozeling or the Abyss itself. Some cookies it recognizes as friends of the tribe might be taken back to it's lair to stay with the survivors of the tribe it managed to hoard.

Does the Dark Dream only affect those in the Cacao kingdom?

No, it only starts with them. It begins with the Licorice Tribe, with the exception of Dark Cacao (it really doesn't like him), and spreads from there. It even has an effect on descendants of cookies native to the Dark Cacao kingdom. As time goes on, it also affects cookies from other lands, all spreading out from the Licorice Sea.

What happens to cookies whom used to live there but have left the kingdom for other residences? Do they also sleepwalk back like Liquorice or is he a special case?

Yup, they experience the same symptoms as Licorice does. Specifically, it lures them to the Black Citadel until it sends out the Call.

What happens when the Sea gets Liquorice back? Does it stop taking or does it stop having restraint and takes everyone?

It will calm for a little while. It finally got what it wanted after all. But now it's on the path to full awareness. It will come for the rest of Earthbread, and the licorice monsters will only grow more aggressive since there's nothing to hold them back now.

Why is it holding back? Is it a power problem? Is it because of Sea Fairy cookie? Is it taking cookies to tip the balance in their favor?

It is sort of a power problem. The Living Abyss is not fully “awake”. Licorice's summoning and other world events disturbing it's slumber start to rouse it for real. Basically the one we see in game is only a proxy, a fragment of the real deal. Additionally, the Licorice Tribe was the only tribe with any knowledge about it at all. In a way, their existence and it's favor gave them away over it. They were keeping it at bay far more than anyone in the kingdom knew. The Dark Dream would have come eventually, but until then, the Licorice Tribe was the only thing keeping it from happening. Even if they weren't entirely aware of that fact.

The Dark Dream is only a precursor to the Living Abyss' rise, but luring cookies is definitely to tip the balance in its favor. The Living Abyss will attempt to swallow Earthbread. That's just what it does. Consume, assimilate, sleep again. If it can lessen the number of cookies in it's way… that's a good thing.

What will happen to the rest of the CoD when Liquorice is taken, will the Sea go for them and the rest /former CoD members?

The only reason the Licorice Sea would be interested in the other Cookies of Darkness is because of Licorice. It doesn't care much either way. Most likely any symptoms of the Dark Dream will progress at a slower pace or stop periodically. It won't end, but since the Living Abyss has what it wants now there's no reason to push so hard. All the cookies who could've stopped it are either dead or in it's possession.

I've said a lot about the remaining Cookies or Darkness since this AU revolves around the Living Abyss and Licorice. So others I know are going to be involved are like, Caramel Arrow Cookie, Crunchy Chip, Milk, Dark Choco, Dark Cacao, and Pure Vanilla too since the Dark Dream resembles an epidemic of sorts and I can see Dark Cacao reaching out to him for help eventually.

Others who I'm debating on are Moonlight and Sea Fairy since this involves dreams and the Licorice Sea. (I'm getting attached to the idea of there being a "blind spot" in the sea that Sea Fairy can't access bc it's the Abyss' domain, but I don't know how plausible this is yet)

One of the precursor events involved Espresso, Strawberry Crepe, and Clotted Cream (Financer probably by default) as well as some OCs.
