Hell’s Itch and ways to treat it

Since summer is coming up, that means a lot of time out in the sun. A few days ago, I got the worst sunburn of my life. It was bearable at first, but then I got the worst itching-burning feeling ever which I later learned was commonly known as Hell’s Itch. If you haven’t dealt with this, trust me the name perfectly describes how it feels.

Now I gotta be honest here: there isn’t much you can do. It just has to go away on its own. But I did learn some do’s and don’t s to follow.

-Don’t scratch it. It may feel like hell to just leave it alone, but an itch is an itch no matter how it feels.

-If you take a shower DO NOT USE SOAP! I cannot stress this enough because this is what triggered my itching. The soap drys out the skin, which is the last thing sunburnt skin needs. Also, don’t take too long of a shower because that can demoistorize the skin as well.

-Take Benadryl and/or Ibprophen, the first helps soothe the itching and makes you sleepy, the second helps soothe the pain.

-Drink lots of water. It helps keep the skin hydrated.

-Now this tip is SO helpful and makes Hell’s itch (90%) bearable. Use Vaseline. Just the classic, normal Vaseline Jelly. Lots of it. Don’t rub it in completely, just place it on your skin and rub it a few times so it spreads out. Just trust me on this one.

Now please note that none of these tricks will work as soon as you try them. It takes patience.

But if you know you are going out in the sun for 3+ hours please PLEASE PLEASE USE SUNSCREEN! Apply it every couple of hours. Going swimming? Bottle says it’s waterproof? I don’t care. Apply it back on after you get out of the water. No one is too cool for sunscreen.

I don’t want others to suffer as I have.
