My first map that I put on this website!!! It is of French Indochina. Which would later become the nations of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and a port in China.

French expansion in the region was directed mostly towards missionary work and trade in the east-indies and china during the late 19th century. However, constant rebellions would plague the colony with growing nationalist movements rising during the 20th century. Tensions would only grow with the end of WW1 and the creation of the Indochinese Security Apparatus, which was used to to combat anti-French actions in the colony. Independence would later be inevitable in Indochina with the rise of socialist/communist movements and occupation by Japan in WW2.

France would try to regain control of the colony after WW2 but would be resisted by Ho Chi Minh when he declared the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This would later turn into the First Indochina War in 1946, which was fought between the Viet Mihn and the French army. Fighting would end with the Geneva Conference of 1954. This led to the splitting of Vietnam and the independence of both Laos and Cambodia. This would end French influence and involvement in the region and would pave the way for future conflicts like the Vietnam war and communist revolutions in both Cambodia and Laos.
