Matthew took a moment to look around the little cafe, and sure enough the seats had been vacated and one of the staff members was carefully making his way around the seats with a broom and a cloth to wipe down the tables that took up the main area of the shop. Where had the time gone? He turned back to Francis and smiled widely before following suit, tossing his backpack over his shoulder after slipping his notebook and laptop back into their respective pockets. 

“You as well,” he said, politely nodding his head once in affirmation of the fact he was very happy with how the night had gone - despite the work he still had to do at home. It was worth it to have a conversation with the man of his...affection? Ah. Maybe. Maaaybe, yes. Matthew often found himself thinking about Francis, so it would be incorrect to pretend that the feelings he harboured weren’t...what? A crush? An actual crush...

Matthew had a crush on Francis, and the realization came tumbling down like a sack of flour being poured atop his head. 

It wasn’t a big, burning crush gripping tightly to his chest or anything like that, just a small flame in the pit of his stomach telling him that this person was special, that Matthew wanted to spend more time with him outside of selling flowers and writing essays - but even that little flame was enough to turn Matthew as red as a Poinsettia, bursting at the seams with a feeling he wished he hadn’t admitted to. 

Before he realized what he was about to do, he said: “We should get coffee again sometime.” The panic of Francis saying no setting in after just a moment forced him to add: “To talk about this stuff. Your job is really interesting - I’d love to learn more about it, if you’d be willing...” 

Smooth as crunchy peanut butter....ugh.

- Who is your celebrity crush? I don’t know if I really have celebrity crushes? Maybe Nick Kroll a bit. 

- What’s a sound you hate?  A sound you love? I really hate any kind of mouth sound. If you’re sitting beside me and I can hear you chewing your food I am out. I’m also not great with sustained loud noises? They make me super flinchy. I love the sound of my kitty cats feet padding on the floor when they run to see me, and I also really love the sound of really thin paper being turned in a book. 

- Do you believe in ghosts? How about aliens? I believe in both of them enough not to fuck with them. 

- Do you drive? If so, have you ever crashed? Nope n’ nope. 

- What was the last book you read? The first Percy Jackson book. Fuck me right up with thAT MYTHOLOGY revisionism. 

- What’s a smell you hate?  A smell you love? I hate the smell of fast food restaurants when it’s really hot out? Like, you know. Hot garbage and french fries. A smell I love is the air while it’s raining. 

- What was the last movie you saw? OH, HELLO: ON BROADWAY! Not technically a movie but exactly my niche. Out of curiosity, I went into my Netflix history and apparently the last actual movie I watched was The Prestige in March. Yikes! 

- If the main characters of the last TV show you watched were all that stood between you and a horde of ravenous zombies, how screwed would you be? I finished the entirety of The Office (US) yesterday and I guess that means I just have to hope that it’s Dwight between me and the throng and not Michael. 

- What’s the last thing you ate/drank? I drank some water. 

- What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had? I have this long-term thing with a stretched tendon in the middle finger of my right hand because I hold writing utensils like a damn fool. 

- Do you have any obsessions right now? I’m a big fan of McElroy content right now? But I’m not ‘obsessed’ with anything other than my cats, maybe. 

- Do you tend to hold grudges against people who’ve done you wrong? Depends if they were actually an asshole. 

- Are you in a relationship? If so, tell us about it. Nyet, I do not need that kind of negativity in my life.

RATIONALITY

You are not afraid of the sufferings and sorrows of other people, even when they are acted out in unappealing ways. Beneath even defensiveness and self-righteous behaviour, you know that deep down people need nurturing and consolation. One danger is being naive about people’s dark sides.
