Song: When the World is Running Down, You Make the Best of What’s Still Around.
Artist: The Police
Kurt was driving, staring out the windshield, taking in his hometown with an absent mind as it passed by at fifty-five miles per hour. A few more months, and it wouldn’t be his home anymore. Though he thought it distractedly, the realization had a sudden impact on him that weakened his heart yet tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
He could leave his family behind—relying on Carole to watch after both his father and step-brother wouldn’t be easy, but they could handle themselves. His friends would all go their separate ways, but he’d have Rachel, and although he couldn’t see himself actually missing his days in the crowded hallways of McKinley, he’d remember the Glee club fondly. After all, it was the first place besides home that had truly welcomed him.
As anxious as he was to abandon Lima for a city that was undoubtedly bigger, better, and brighter, the town was irreplaceable. The boy with unconditional love overflowing in big hazel eyes was not an image he associated with New York City. He could imagine all he wanted those very eyes brimming with excitement at the big city, every color of light imaginable reflected in them, but it would not be a reality, at least not for a long time.
To leave Lima was also to leave all the memories of his mother behind…
When the road became a grayish blur before him and the cars nothing more than metallic gleaming smudges, Kurt pulled over in the parking lot of a long-abandoned apartment complex. Immediately, his phone began vibrating.
Blaine.
“….Kurt, what’s wrong.”
It was a demand, rather than a question. No use trying to dry his tears and pretend with his boyfriend, or his still-shaky voice, for that matter.
“Blaine… I’m really scared about the future; just worried and uncertain, and nervous to the point that I’m sick.”
A thoughtful silence, then, “In that case, what your brother said was perfect.”
“What? What did Finn say?” Kurt asked, curiosity overcoming him as he imagined all the humiliating occurrences-turned-stories that had possibly been relayed to Blaine.
“He said he was watching his favorite old movies that he had on VHS on his old VCR.”
“What?” Kurt cringed with slight horror. “He still has a VCR?”
“Apparently. I asked him why, he said that some of his VHS movies he didn’t have on DVD, so he was making the best of what’s still around,” Blaine explained.
“So what is this supposed to mean?” Kurt asked, suddenly impatient and wary.
“Just come home.” Kurt could practically hear the smile, the pride and anticipation in his voice.

“It was all so neat and organized; I hated to mess it up…” Blaine trailed off, looking around the space wistfully. “I promise I’ll clean it up when this is over.”
He gestured to Kurt’s room—back to normal in its fullest: no boxes warned of his moving day, no little things that he didn’t use everyday were packed up anymore, waiting for New York. They were all placed about his room—correctly, in fact, with no cardboard to be seen—and Kurt could do nothing more than take in a small breath. Amazing.
“Kurt, I’m sorry. If… if you don’t want this, then I can start repacking right now. I just thought that it would be nice to… forget you’re leaving for awhile. I mean, I know we have to accept that it’s reality and everything, but… it isn’t happening for a few more weeks… and Finn gave me this idea, and you were feeling bad so… we can just sit here in this room, exactly how it used to be, and just talk.”
“Blaine,” Kurt interrupted, eyes beginning to sting with tears, “This is… wonderful.”
He could have gone on about just how wonderful, why it was so perfect, and the way Blaine always knew how to revert his life into happiness, but it wasn’t needed. Blaine knew.
Smiling widely at Kurt’s approval, he pulled him in for a hug.
There was no harm in making the best of what was still around.
