Beating The Summer Gap

Every kid loves summer vacation. But that long break from school over summer can be detrimental to their education. Kids have trouble retaining information when they don’t have the consistency and structure that going to school provides. However, here are three easy ways that parents can help their children stay sharp during the downtime.

Educational Games: Summer is supposed to be a vacation, which means it should be fun, but that doesn’t mean learning can’t also happen. Playing educational games helps kids brush up on their studies and helps remind them of things they learned during the school year. Matching games, Scrabble Jr., and Uno are just a few of our favorites!

Sports: Without having somewhere specific they need to go every day, it can be easy for kids to become sedentary. As parents we are all worried about our kids being exposed to too much screen time. Team and individual sports help incorporate physical activity, strategy, teamwork, concentration, focus, and critical thinking. The summer is also a great time to learn a new sport by hitting a few tennis balls or shooting a few hoops!

Summer Camp: The best way to reduce summer learning loss is by attending summer camp! At summer camp kids get to be active, and explore many different interests in a safe and secure environment. However, summer camp isn’t just about the fun and friends. Kids get a chance to build important 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration and creativity! While these skills are taught in some schools, at camp our children get to work on them every day.

Taking a break from school can be beneficial, especially if kids are getting an education, new skills and activity from exciting and fun summer opportunities.

Coach Profile: Sarah Kamenetz

As a Private Ice Skating Coach and former City Ice Skating Director, Sarah has over 10 years of experience training beginner to elite level skaters. She also teaches basic hockey skills, and off-ice conditioning. She is a Moves-in-the-Field Gold Medalist; ISI Gold Judge; holds Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED; and PSA CER A certifications. To complement her off ice training, Sarah holds Yoga Alliance RYS 200 teaching, Barre, and Group Fitness Instructor certifications. She brings these wide range of skills and qualifications to her coaching at Corbin’s Crusaders.

Malik Lee played Defensive Back and Special Teams for the American International College Yellow Jacket football team. He graduated from AIC with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration in 2018. And is now a football and team sports coach at Corbin’s Crusaders.

**Corbin's Crusaders Sports Club No School Special** What: Vacation Day Camps When: Religious holidays, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Winter Break, MLK Day, President’s Week, Spring Break, Memorial Day, and even Parent Teacher Conferences Corbin’s Crusaders Sports club host day camps when schools are out for various reasons. Our motto is “When school is out, Corbin’s is in.” Day camp consists of various trips and multiple sports throughout the day. Weather permitting, we go to Randall’s Island or our summer camp in New City, a half-hour north of Manhattan in Rockland County. We will pick up your children between 8 and 9am at home*, conduct a full camp day with lunch and snack included. We will transport the children back home between 3 and 4pm. We have an extended day option. What: One Day Summer Camp Experience!

When: Monday, October 8th, 2012

Corbin's Crusaders will be hosting a true summer camp experience in the heart of the fall season. We will pick up your children between 7:30 and 8:30am, transport them to our camp facility in New City, NY and run a summer camp extravaganza. At camp we have all sports, a skate park, a KRAZY maze and even an inflatable area for our smallest of guests. Lunch and snack will be provided. We will then transport the children back home between 4:30 and 5:30pm. Please RSVP Manny via email by Saturday October 6th to reserve your spot!

Cost: $187 (Includes transportation, all activities and lunch)
