NYCC 2017
Hey guys, just wanted to thank everyone for the awesome buzz - heard the comic actually SOLD OUT at this year’s con and really clicked with a bunch of folks. We are so excited to build more momentum and start brainstorming that second issue...
Please share with your friends to help keep building the momentum. Check the top of our page for links to buy the first full issue, see other work by our great contributors, and stay tuned for more updates.
On sale at Booth #966 right behind Rooster Teeth. I'm around the convention, so feel free to tweet or DM me if your want to say hey.
Comic’s now available to buy!
After a few months of coordination, the comic’s finally available to purchase. Just follow this link right here... got it? Alright! You can score a physical copy or a digital download.
As always, questions and comments are welcome, so feel free to reach out.
Pronto Comics' interview with me is live. Check out and see some more pages from the comic.
Quick CORE Update
Sorry for the silence, everyone. The comic should be available sometime soon for online purchase (both physical and digital versions) and Pronto will be publishing an interview about the comic within the next few weeks. Once those things get rolling, expect more updates.
Hi, is core still going on or is it dead? Thanks
Still kickin'. Now that Comic Con is over, we're coordinating next steps with Pronto.
The first page Ashe illustrated compared to Ariel’s--it was a drastic change in style and design. As you read the comic, you’ll notice some basic elements survived the leap, like character design and certain deformation when reacting or emoting, but it was overall a dramatic aesthetic shift.

Two of Zee’s way early designs, when we were still nailing down the basics of how cores worked and where they went.
@ctrl-zee-blog
Two of Ariel’s nearly-finished pages, before Ashe took over.
@liefeldianabomination
Here’s Ariel’s complete character sheet. Zee had only previously rendered our friend on the left from the shoulder’s up, it was Ariel’s idea to make the outfits match. Purple outfit was intended as something of a cross between Shinji from Evangelion and Id from Xenogears.
@liefeldianabomination
While Zee did the principal character and machine designs, Ariel produced a lot of awesome work on the fly. Both of the fighting robots in second scene (and up there in the header) are his babies.
@liefeldianabomination
On the subject of Ariel, that center-right panel is one of my favorite of his illustrations that didn’t quite survive the transition to the final product. I loved seeing the characters go off-model with really exaggerated reactions and emotions.
@liefeldianabomination
For comparison to the last post, one of Ariel’s first layouts for the opening scene. Some of those basic traits have survived, but as the character and his personality became more fleshed out, his physical appearance also evolved.
@liefeldianabomination
Zee never rendered this guy’s full body--ultimately, between Ariel and Ashe, this character’s design evolved the most.
@ctrl-zee-blog
Some of the original concept iterations on the protagonist by Zee. Ultimately, we went with a combo of the first two, minus the elf shoes. His face wasn’t quite as controversial, as we only really tinkered with scar placement. One of the most interesting parts of this process was seeing each artist’s take on the characters.
@ctrl-zee-blog
Here’s the back cover to the comic, which is the unobstructed collage from the front, flipped. Thanks again to Ashe for the awesome illustration work and to Zee for the great designs.
