“And yet another murder.” With a displeased expression, Diana dropped the newspaper back onto the coffee. Although she had been the doctor responsible for determining the cause of death and doing the required analysis of the body, her name had not featured in the newspaper, at her request, nearing the spotlight had her ill at ease. “This is getting depressing.” Her hand raised in the air, to signal the bartender over to refill her glass.

“It really is,” she said, biting lightly on her nail. “I thought, after the first couple, it would be over and things would start to calm down, but I have a bad feeling that this is going to get a lot worse. It really makes me wonder about this town. It seemed so nice and quiet at first, and now there’s just so much insanity everywhere.”

Awful wasn’t the word Everett would use. Boring, perhaps. It wasn’t like hunters were a new idea to him. “They were foolish enough for hunters to figure them out and destroy them,” he pointed out, only elaborating on his point. “If they weren’t careful enough to keep themselves hidden from hunters, they didn’t deserve immortality at all. The killings are just weeding out the idiots. Natural selection.” With that, he allowed his gaze to fall on Corinna, smirk remaining firmly in place.

“The hunters are getting smarter, I don’t think it’s entirely on us as vampires anymore,” she protested. Leave it to Everett to see it in such a cynical way. “This is serious. It’s not like those were the only ones that were going to end up dead. There will be more and eventually, someone’s going to get hurt who’s not an idiot, as you put it.” Corinna frowned at his smirk, taking a step back. “Like you.”

Everett tore his gaze from the newspaper stand to roll his eyes, already tired of hearing about the latest death. It’d have been interesting had they been human, but the details of the deaths made it evident they were otherwise. This one seemed to have been another vampire. Hearing someone approach, his lips twitched into a smirk. “Natural selection at its finest,” he told them matter-of-factly, returning his gaze to the text, not once looking in their direction. “You’d think they’d be more careful. This makes… how many now?”

Corinna wrinkled her nose at how he put it, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m not really sure it’s a natural selection thing,” she said, glancing over his shoulder to frown at the paper that bore the bad news. “I haven’t really been keeping track, but it’s at least the third. Awful, really.” And to think, she could be next if she found herself caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Any of them could be.

Totally meant to do my intros before I left the house! But I am back now so I’ll be working on them in between doing a few replies for each of my kids. If anyone is interested in any plots with a sweet new(ish) vampire or a fed up, unaware human, hmu, even if it’s just for like a generic plot like friends or something!
