He smiled as she seemed to eagerly accept his offer of endless random trivia and movie references. All of the movie references that were coming to mind seemed to be romantic comedies. It didn’t feel entirely appropriate to joke despite the way he was feeling. They had nearly gotten off on the wrong foot once before. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel uncomfortable with him. He genuinely didn’t believe she looked at him in that way but it was hard to dismiss all the similarities of the beginnings of a film. “That’s dangerous to so willingly accept that. You’ll be rolling your eyes soon,” he teased. At least he knew she wasn’t likely to tire of it in a single evening.
“Maybe that’s it,” he offered as she gave a potential explanation why things felt so easy between them. Aaron smiled warmly as she described how easy and comfortable their conversation was. It made him feel a little less strange for feeling that way knowing she did too. He wondered if they had anything else in common about the way they felt. But he pushed those thoughts aside. There was no point in entertaining them. “I definitely am enjoying this setting a lot more than sitting in a hospital bed. I still get the same great conversation but at least you get a little more in return,” he shot her a knowing smile, “a little anyways."
Aaron felt a little wave of relief wash over him as she agreed to pizza. Not that he’d gotten any impression she might want the night to end soon but it was nice to know that she wanted it to continue a little longer. At least long enough for them to have dinner together. He tipped his head to the side and shrugged one shoulder as she asked about his preferences for pizza toppings. The truth was he really didn’t know. He’d eaten plenty of pizza but less as Aaron and more as Kenny. He really wasn’t sure what he liked on his pizza anymore. Maybe something had changed. He was well aware there were plenty of things he hadn’t tried yet. It felt strange to admit that to her though.
“Did you know,” he started giving her a playful grin as he prepared to launch into trivia that she allegedly wanted to hear, “there’s a World Pizza Championship in Italy? There’s also a Pizza Museum in Philly. I haven’t been but I watch something about it.”
He watched her as she went to find menus in the kitchen. The lack of her presence on the other end of the couch was noticeable to him despite her having not gone far, still in his line of sight. He wasn’t entirely sure what to do with that information but he tucked it away for later evaluation. He smiled as she came back and sat down on the couch again and he took the menu from her. There was a warmth and comfort that seemed to accompany her as she settled in next to him and pointed at the menu.
He was so caught up in paying attention to her proximity that he nearly missed what she was explaining to him. Aaron smiled, “maybe because it keeps them up at the top of the phone book,” he suggested but laughed softly, “I guess that probably doesn’t really mean much anymore though.”
Pizza, wine, and chocolate. It felt like it could be a date. Aaron knew it wasn’t but he wondered if this is what it felt like. The circumstances were beyond unusual but they had still managed to carve out some sense of normalcy. They skirted around certain topics and had a strange sense of familiarity with one another that wouldn’t be felt on a first date. He wondered what it might be like if there was a version of reality in which he might ask her on one, and she would accept. And even more so that there could be a second.
His eyes glanced over the menu and he tipped it slightly so she could look at it if she liked. “I’m happy to have whatever you’d like on it. I don’t remember getting anything too fancy in the past but I’ll try anything,” he gestured slightly to the chocolates between them as evidence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh I don’t think it’s dangerous at all.” She replied with a grin. “I’m looking forward to it actually.” Sarah found herself looking forward to listening to him find ways to intersperse bits of trivia and movie references into their conversation. She was eager to learn more about the man who had returned to thank his former nurse. It was vaguely reminiscent of seeing an old friend from childhood years later and learning about them all over again as adults. Only in this version she was still the same, but he was seeing her in a different light and she was getting to know a stranger who was only faintly familiar. It was still so foreign to her, yet she couldn’t look away nor did she want their evening to end too soon. While hard to reconcile the before and after, she didn’t want to miss a thing by getting too wrapped up in trying to figure out the why of it. That would be for later in retrospect.
Now she wanted to make the most of what little time they had. If pressed, she wouldn’t have been able to put into words why it mattered so much, only that it did. She wanted to look back on the memories they made now and remember him. The one patient she couldn’t help who somehow managed to get a new and different ending to his story.
“It’s not just a little in return, I get quite a bit actually.” She said softly. “And I’m sure this is much better than a hospital bed, especially being healed as well.” A memory sparked then of sitting in the mostly dark room after her shift, the only illumination coming from the little light she had clipped to her book. She’d read to him until he drifted off to sleep. Because she was there, she’d turned off the normal light above the bed the staff used throughout the night to check vitals and deal with emergencies. There were small ways she could make it feel less like a hospital room even for just a short time. Glancing over at him sitting across from her drew a fond smile from her. It made her happy to know he didn’t need that extra support from her any longer.
She let out a small laugh. “I did not know either of those facts.” Sarah replied, her smile wide. “That’s really impressive that you know random facts about pizza. So do they serve pizza in this museum or just tease you with the idea of it in pictures?” She asked with an impish grin. “And is it just traditional pizza or does include like dessert pizzas or anything with a crust and toppings that could be stretched to fit the definition?” He’d given her a bit of information and now she was curious to know more.
“Ah, that makes sense. Though I always just figured it was some kind of common Italian name so it was used for lending an air of authenticity whether or not that was an actual Angelo in the family or not.” She quipped.
She glanced at the menu when he kindly tilted it for her to see as well. It struck her when he mentioned not remembering anything too fancy in the past. It was similar to how he’d noted not knowing what flavors he liked with they shared the chocolate. She wondered what it was, if he didn’t have the time or inclination to discover his preferences. Sarah didn’t want to pry though, nor ask a question that made him uncomfortable or inadvertently stumble into a topic he couldn’t talk about. It felt as if they’d fall into a comfortable cadence and then she’d second guess something, worrying she was going to accidentally break their unspoken agreement not to pry.
“Honestly, I like a lot of different kinds..” Sarah said. “We could try one with everything, if you want, then you can see which toppings are your favorite.” She offered. “Or would you rather narrow it down to just a few?” She asked, trying to get a sense of what he might like. “We could get different topping on each half too, that’s another option.” Sarah couldn’t explain why she felt a need to try help him figure out what he liked only that she wanted to. Sharing the chocolates the way the had proved to be a lot of fun. She hadn’t imagined her day was going to turn out the way it had.
Aaron laughed softly and nodded in agreement as she described how she had gone down the path of overthinking. “I unfortunately know exactly what you mean,” he smiled at her. Time and time again he found himself grateful that she understood him in that way. His mind worked in a much different way than most people but yet they found far more similarities together than they ever did differences.
It’s nothing like my feelings for you.
Deep down, he knew the truth in her statement but it was still a relief to hear the words come from her lips given their current topic. It brought an instant smile to his face as she said it. It caused a warmth to spread through him and soothe any of the concerns his mind may have tried to bring up.
He frowned slightly as she explained where her mind had been when she’d gotten involved with Joe. His heart ached to think about her being in a bad place and reaching out for someone else. He was grateful Joe had been there to help her navigate during those times. “You don’t have to explain yourself, Cory,” he encouraged gently. “We both thought the other was gone. I was with someone too. I don’t hold that against you and I don’t think you would me, either,” Aaron offered hopefully.
“I would never have expected you to be waiting on me. I never did even before when I used to come to visit. Let alone waiting on the memory of someone who you thought was gone.” He had worried at times that he would return and find her involved in a serious relationship. Nothing had ever happened between them but he couldn’t deny the thoughts in the back of his mind even if he wanted to try to deny the feelings that came with them. “All I ever wanted was for you to be happy. Finding that before was hard enough and finding it afterwards would’ve been even more challenging. I’m glad Joe was there. This kind of life is lonely enough as it is.”
He nodded along slowly as she explained how she’d tumbled down the rabbit hole of overthinking and worry. It was not dissimilar to his own bouts of similar instances. He gave her a warm smile. “I’m glad you told me when you were ready. And I’m not hurt or blindsided by any of it, I promise,” he explained gently. Aaron would never know how he might’ve reacted if Joe hadn’t told him previously but he was fairly confident he wouldn’t have been hurt. While it was all still very new, they had established themselves enough that he was relatively safe in the knowledge of how she felt about him - earlier wobble about their conversation topic aside.
“If it’s anything like I would be, I’m sure you’ve had a lot on your mind this week.” Aaron was momentarily regretful he didn’t see it for what it was. She was exceptionally good at putting on a brave face and deflecting any glimmers of concern he might’ve spotted. But he had committed to trying to stop overanalyzing every tiny detail about her too, it didn’t seem fair to either of them. He was grateful she’d come to him without him pressing too soon. “If you need or want to talk about anything that came up,” he offered softly, “I’m here.”
Aaron offered her a smile. “You’re allowed to have the whole glass at once. Or the whole bottle. I don’t mind. You’re in good hands,” he teased playfully.. Tipping his head to the side as he regarded her with a smile, he continued, “but I’m happy you don’t feel like you need to have it but you do deserve it.”
His smile brightened even more as she stepped in closer to him with the request of a hug in the air. Aaron didn’t drop his gaze away from hers as he set his own wine glass down on the counter. His hands came up to gently rest against her hips, drawing her in slowly, “I am more than okay with that plan,” he agreed as an edge of a flirtatious tone returned. He moved his hands to wrap around her and pull her into a tight embrace.
Aaron hadn’t realized how much he needed a hug from her as well until he had her wrapped up in his arms. The temporary stress and his own battle with overthinking had caused a lingering tension in him that began to quickly melt away. He breathed in deeply, enjoying the warmth and closeness accompanied by the gentle smell of her shampoo and everything that was Corinne. He was suddenly aware of how happy and relieved he felt.
Slowly he pulled away so he could look at her, “c’mon,” he encouraged softly as one hand came up to gently trace along the hair against her face before moving to lightly cup her cheek. Aaron tipped his head to press a soft kiss to her lips. “You’ve done all this stress cooking and baking, we wouldn't want it to go to waste,” he teased.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To see Aaron’s smile when she’d told him that her feelings for Joe were nothing like her feelings for him brought not only a deep sense of relief but a mix of heady and warm feelings flooding her senses all at the same time. It felt like she lived for that smile and in way perhaps she did after everything they’d both gone through only to have found each other again. It felt very much like she was alive again after losing so much.
He was a tie to her past she didn’t have to worry as much about as all the rest of the people she’d known. Though she did and always would to a certain extent, he was the only one uniquely suited to defend himself as he’d proven more than once.
Though she understood what he meant by not having to explain herself, still she couldn’t help but at least try to account for Joe’s continued presence in her life. One thing she’d never lacked was empathy or understanding, it was as natural as breathing to imagine how it feel to her if roles were reversed. “Of course. I just wanted to make sure there was no misunderstanding about our current relationship.” She said softly. “I’m happy to know you had someone. At the risk of sounding trite, It was the same for me. I cared then and still do, I want you to be happy and safe. My understanding was that everyone had to believe I was gone, no exceptions.” Her complicated feelings had never been more important than making sure anyone connected to her was safe and she could only accomplish that by being dead to them.
When Aaron had shown up that day in her cafe, the long practiced words would not fall from her lips. ‘No, you must be mistaken. I have one of those faces. Never heard of Sarah.’ Even the thought of it now with him standing on front of her made her heart ache. She smiled instead. They’d cleared the air. He was just fine. Perhaps Joe’s choice had spared them both from what might have been a challenging conversation. Maybe hearing It from her might have landed differently for him.
She shook her head when he offered to be there if she needed to talk about anything else. “No, I really just needed to know you were okay and that I hadn’t done something to hurt you by not telling you sooner.” She assured him. “You’re too important to me to risk that. We don’t have to talk about that time in between.” Corinne added quietly unable to complete the sentence with ‘since we last said goodbye and when you came into my cafe.’ Sometimes the thoughts were just too raw to articulate. Equally she was unsure how Aaron felt and whether he wanted reminders of his past and what he went through himself. “Unless you have questions or want to.” They’d not really spoken about it. Whatever feelings she might have had might have been nothing like his. There had been no promises, just some kind of unspoken understanding that their meetings were welcomed on both sides. What they might have meant to the other though was never mentioned.
When he playfully teased she was indeed allowed to have more than the normal amount of wine consumed in polite company, she smiled and shook her head. Though she did then pickup her glass to take another sip before setting it down again.”No, I think I can just enjoy it for the usual reasons and not to numb frayed nerves or sooth my thoughts. I have a much better option for that with the company.” She said in a similarly playful tone, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at him.
Her smile softened once more when Aaron agreed to the hug she requested. The moment his hands were on her hips tugging her close in that slow way she couldn’t help but suck in a quick breath. How often the banter between them took on a flirty edge was welcome as always. She was smiling as she wrapped her arms around, letting out a contented sigh as she felt his embrace. The moment was exactly what she needed, the unspoken gesture conveying so much more than words. She buried her face in his neck for a moment, allowing the familiar scent of his soap bring her that sense of calm the same way his arms around her did.
She let out soft hum of contentment when he touched his hand to her face, returning his kiss with an equally gentle one of her own. She smiled at his teasing. “Hey, I pulled out my best offerings, or some of them anyway.” She retorted in kind. “I don’t do that for just anyone.”
Corinne reluctantly disentangled herself from his arms so she could get their dinner from where it was warming in the oven. “How do your like your steak anyway?” She asked as she pulled the tray from the oven. “More done or on the rare side?” Another seemingly small random detail she’d never discovered about him.
“Knowing someone isn’t coming back doesn’t mean you ever stop waiting.”

“That’s only fair considering how often you do the same to me,” he smiled. He might've been hesitant to admit that to her so boldly if the reciprocation wasn’t so clear on her features. Undeniably, Aaron appreciated the effect that his words had on Corinne. The blush that rose up on her cheeks was deeply endearing to him. It made him want to find any number of things to draw that out of her even more. After years of enjoying their little snippets of time together uncertain about how she might’ve felt about him, there was something enthralling about knowing he did have that effect on her now.
He laughed softly and shook his head. “It doesn’t sound corny, I feel the same,” he admitted with a smile. Aaron found it easier and easier to keep his own confessions flowing the more she opened up. The last thing he wanted was for her to question if the feelings were requited. “Happy doing anything makes it sound like it should be easy to plan a date then,” he teased her, “but that leaves open a lot of endless possibilities for me to narrow down,” he grinned at her. There were no less than a dozen potential ideas already rumbling around in his mind. Not that he’d ever thought about taking her on a date before and what he would do. Of course not. “I’m sure I can come up with something.”
Aaron smiled warmly as she assured him that she wouldn’t have wanted to get closer to anyone else. The way she discussed her own feelings about him made his heart flutter. “I think it was always true for me even if I didn’t see it right away,” he admitted softly. “I can fake being relaxed and talking to just about anyone but I never had to with you. It was always real. You didn’t get that other version of me. I was careful and cautious but it was still always me,” he reflected. “And it felt like it only got better since I walked into your cafe,” he gave her a smile.
He managed to temporarily put aside all the warm, contented swirl of emotions that had bubbled up during their conversation. Aaron wasn’t ready to shelve them completely for the day but his mind switched gears to focus on completing the request she had wanted.
“It’s not something I’ve had to do for myself,” Aaron admitted, “usually I only did this kind of thing because it was needed at the time and not long term,” he reflected softly. He listened carefully as she explained what he needed to do. It made him happy that she was well enough to be able to instruct him. While he had managed to make do with the clinical instructions and research, he much preferred to get the instructions from her own voice.
Aaron refocused on the task and carefully worked through each step. There was no rush or hurry to complete it so he took his time and gave Corinne every opportunity to correct him if he misstepped. When it was done, the work mode dropped away and he smiled at her again. He gave her arm a light squeeze below where he’d been working. Another quick touch to check in that had become so normal to him but now seemed to hold new meaning. It was surprising to even him how quickly she allowed him to change gears.
“You’re free, or free-er anyways,” he announced with a smile, “how’s it feel?” Aaron knew there was some risk in giving her free rein but he had to trust she would take it easy. Or easy-ish, anyways. He certainly had no plans to go anywhere so he took comfort in the fact he’d at least be able to keep an eye on her if she did decide to try to be more mobile.
Aaron would check in with Joe soon and see if they could relieve Corinne completely of the attachments soon. Admittedly, he would’ve preferred to keep her hooked up to fluids and easy access to medications for her own good but he understood her desire to have a little freedom. It was not a welcomed kind of change to her usual freedom of movement.
He collected the remnants of everything he’d used and set them on the bedside table to be dealt with later. He moved aside the bag and eased himself down on the edge of the bed beside her. “You mentioned that you’d like to take a shower or potentially do something with your hair,” he recalled, “how are you feeling? Would you like to give anything a try now that you don’t have to worry about being tangled.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aaron’s teasing admission how it was only fair he was giving her butterflies that she did the same to him made her smile. She loved how it seemed suddenly they were being so open about their feelings for one another. It made her happy and yes even giddy. As much as sometimes having her feelings so clearly show up on her skin whether she was wanting to make it known or not was uncomfortable for her, Aaron’s reactions had a way of making that feeling dissipate so quickly. There was something irresistible in his smile. It was easier knowing it was mutual. Sometimes still her own body revealed an emotion before she was aware.
“I’m pretty easy about that kind of thing.” She said of date plans. “I’ve always loved spending time with you, we seemed to always find plenty to talk about. That’s what I look for in a date, that I enjoy being with someone.” She explained. “And if I’m being honest, that first night after you came back to find me, it was really hard to not feel like it was a date. The wine and tasting the chocolates together and getting to know each other in a way, that was perfect.” She admitted softly. “As I’m sure you know, pizza and beer is also something I enjoy. So really, it’s quite simple, as long as you’re there, it’s a date no matter where or what we do. Does that help?” She laughed, knowing the options were still wide open. It didn’t necessarily need to be a meal, any activity he might suggest would be just as thrilling.
You didn’t get that other version of me. I was careful and cautious but it was still always me
Corinne was caught off guard with his admission. Though maybe she shouldn’t have been, they had spoken before of how easy it had been between them. Always, it seemed. To hear it just then though made her unaccountably happy. “It was this thing, an inexplicable connection from the beginning that felt effortless and easy. I guess in hindsight I should have realized sooner. I was so busy trying to not get involved with anyone, I ignored what were obvious signs that someone was right there in front of me.” She let out a quiet sigh and gave him a helpless shrug. “I can see from the outside so clearly for everyone else, just not so much for me I suppose.”
She’d given a rather swift set of instructions about capping the IV. Yet it didn’t surprise her at all to see Aaron quickly and efficiently handle the process without a single misstep. It still made her marvel at how fast he picked up tasks that were new to him, what a quick study he was. She was quite impressed to see his intelligence in action. “Nicely done.” She said when he was finished. “I know seasoned nurses who don’t do it so efficiently and no way a nursing student could have immediately put verbal instructions into practice without a lot of notes.” The only other person with any experience would be Joe who she’d known had been a field medic at one time. All things considered she was more comfortable it was Aaron and she was sure if anyone had asked, Joe would have agreed.
“It feels just fine. And at same time strange to be on the other side of as a patient.” She commented. “I don’t know that I’d have trusted too many people with it, both starting one and doing this.” The admiration was clear in her eyes and tone.
She listened as he reminded her about her wanting a shower. Corinne gave him a softened smile. “Do you trust me to do that yet?” She asked. “I’m sure you would rather wash my hair at the kitchen sink than let me shower wouldn’t you?” She knew he would likely only feel safe in the bathroom with her just on the other side of the curtain. She weighed the options in her own head while she waited for him to answer. While she knew she could probably get to agree to her preference, albeit reluctantly if she opted for the shower, she was still mindful of all he’d done for her and what she’d put them all through. “Maybe we could compromise and I could shower but you can wash my hair at the sink.” She offered. “I can keep it in the braid for now.”
A smile spread across his lips as she let out a breath of laughter and answered his question. Even though he was fairly certain what her response would be, there was still a thrilling anticipation that gripped him at what she might say. They traded the suggestive banter back and forth, starting to build a new layer atop their already established chemistry. Both swaying together in a dance of a new, yet somehow familiar, rhythm.
The grin on his face only widened further when she shot back that look at him and leveled her question in such an enticing tone. “Coincidentally,” he started by pressing a single soft kiss to her lips, “I was also thinking about you and not getting out of bed.”
Later
There was something about the second time that was even better than the first. Aaron hadn’t been tangled up in uncertainty. Corinne had quieted the cacophony of second guessing in his mind with her gentle reassurances. There was no hesitancy this time. Newness and excitement mixed now with the warmth of familiarity. Still endless aspects of the other to learn and enjoy but no longer clouded with doubt about what the other might want.
He’d made good on his earlier promise to himself to take things slow. The previous night had been a mix of uncertain exploration and sudden intensity. Now, with the benefit of the late morning light, he could fully appreciate all the new soft curves of her body she’d now granted him access to. And he took his time to savor them all.
When they were both satiated, he’d pulled her into his arms again. With her head against his chest, he’d held her close as they’d both caught their breath and basked in the quiet enjoyment of one another. An unexpected intensity had surprised him with the mix of emotional and physical connection with Corinne. He knew for certain that he’d never felt so close to anyone before. All of the things he’d confessed to her that he’d never spoken to anyone else had opened the door to newfound intimacy in many ways. She had heard everything the night before. All the closely held secrets about his own thoughts and mind. The soft confessions about his own feelings for her. And still, she was right there with him, it had only brought them closer. In the same way, he felt he’d gotten to know and understand her so much more.
Even though she wasn’t looking at him, a smile was lingering on his lips as he reflected. He gently hugged her closer against his chest. Aaron tipped his head to kiss the top of her head. “So what kind of breakfast did you want to have for lunch?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She let out a soft sigh of contentment when Aaron subtly held her closer, she caught that slight flex in his muscles and the gentle tightening of his embrace. The sweet kiss drew her smile a bit wider. She’d been happily laying there catching her breath, recalling the last little while. As physically close and tangled together as they were, still she let her hand naturally settle on his chest, tracing nonsensical patterns just for the connection. The morning had been decidedly slower than last night. Which was another new experience for them. It was just as thrilling as the night before, for similar and different reasons all at the same time. She’d reveled in the time to get to know his body even better, to learn more ways to elicit certain sounds.
Unsurprisingly given everything that had transpired leading up to that moment, all the confessions they’d spoken out loud to one another, the closeness they already had established combined to bring them closer still. The second time brought a comfortable familiarity that seemed to settle over them.
“Hmm.” She hummed softly giving his question some thought. “Trying to decide between sweet and savory or both.” She mused. “Maybe something really decadent like stuffed French toast with a side of hash browns or sausage and bacon. Or a variation of eggs Benedict,” She mused as she snuggled closer. “I might need your help to narrow it down, otherwise we’re likely to end up with enough food for a week.” She added. “Anything special you’re in the mood for?”
She somewhat reluctantly shifted a just enough so she could move her head and look at him. “I also think it’s worth noting again that I am rather fond of this very leisurely morning we’ve had.” Corinne’s smile widened as she gazed at him.
“Since you got us coffee earlier, it seems only fair that it’s my turn to get out of this warm bed and make whatever this meal is.” She offered.
@kylo-wrecked cont. from (x)
“Jersey?” He paused. “I don’t know Jersey well.” Tipped his head apologetically, as though he were still bowing and apologizing for his poor Japanese.
“New Jersey has more horses per square mile than any other U.S. state, right? Maybe that's just state-level marketing?”
Ben wanted to ask her how it felt to trust a creature that outweighed her tenfold, but she kept re-centering the conversation around him and, God… ffff—he wrapped both hands around the mug and bore his gaze into the wood grain.
Is this really how it was? What a terrible bargain, having no choice but to talk about himself if he wanted to learn a thing or two about Corinne. A feeling he still couldn’t explain to himself, or the therapist, or the police, filled the slots between his ribs like sand.
Wetting his mouth with coffee, Ben looked up and confessed, his face contorted with guilt, scleras burning hot with tears, lips trembling around the words, 'I haven’t enjoyed anything since I’ve come back.'
He said, 'You’re one of the few people who make me feel like I might be okay.'
No, of course he didn’t say that. He didn’t confess to anything more than a frivolous pastime. He’d have to be drunk, or rash, or brave. He’d have to have been reborn with a titanium spine, contoured and polished. Hadn’t crashed the car hard enough. Instead, he curled over the table and arranged his entire field of perception around Corinne.
“If I have time?” Ben smiled. “I like reading detective thrillers, seeing what choices the author made and whether they work.” He shrugged easily. “I was trained to read a certain way.”
He was getting good at the easy shrug.
“Driving," he added. "I could drive for hours.”
But he was in the City. Among other things. Ben rested his massive hands on the table’s edge and waited to receive his morsel in exchange for these facts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I haven’t heard that about Jersey, but I suppose it’s a possibility. Seem to be a lot of stables.” She remarked. “Or equally possible it’s someone’s idea of good marketing, though only for certain demographics I guess.” She added with a small laugh. “I don’t always get marketing strategies I suppose.” She admitted. “Thankfully coffee shops are pretty self explanatory and most of my business is word of mouth.” She said. “More than you wanted to know probably.”
Corinne took another sip from her mug, wondering what Ben was thinking about. It was hard to tell sometimes. His smiles seemed more of a rarity or perhaps more sparsely given out. Because of that, she liked It when he cast one in her direction. It felt like some kind of gift. There was a seriousness about him. She would happen to glance up at his eyes, wondering if she caught a glimpse of sadness or it was just a reflection of her own feelings. The ones she tried to hide from the world along with everything else about herself.
Sometimes the burden of having to keep so much hidden felt suffocating. Most of the time she could ignore it, push the weight of it off to the side. Sometimes though a fleeting memory surfaced, ignited by some unsuspecting customer or stranger just living their life, unknowingly sparking a flash of the past. Not realizing the woman offering a smile was fighting to keep up a facade. Most of the time It felt like hers, sometimes it felt like someone else’s life she just put on like a coat.
When he spoke again, she couldn’t help but smile at what he said. “I like those too.” She replied softly, a hint of marvel in her tone as if it surprised her to learn he read the same genre. “I enjoy guessing, though for some the formula seems too similar and I can guess the outcome way too soon. I’m not so fond of that, I like a bit more challenge."
“If you don’t mind my asking, what do you mean by trained a certain way to read? You don’t have to explain though.” She said, hoping he wasn’t thinking she was prying.
She nodded when he said he liked driving. “Sounds like the same of enjoyment I get from riding. Especially trail rides. There’s nothing quite like it. Though I do enjoy a road trip too, especially a scenic one. Is it driving, the sights or both for you?"
Welsh Cakes
Her smile turned a little shy when he looked over at her following her teasing comment about trying one right away. She was working on keeping up with the ones he placed near for her to roll in the sugar. His next comment made her laugh softly when he said he hadn’t seen anything and focused back on the pan.
She carefully broke one in two pieces, laid one near Gareth and popped the other half in her mouth. “Mmm.” She hummed as she finished the bite. “Oh my goodness those are downright addictive.” She said. “I can absolutely see why they don’t last long. They’re so good.” She went back to work at her task, marveling at how quickly they cooked and took to complete.
“I can see that. I might have to just choose one day a week to offer.” She said, actually giving it some thought. Part of the motivation was due to the desire to make sure she could make them for Gareth. The thought surprised her a little. He’d been so kind though she wanted to return the favor to the extent she could. He’d gone out of his way to make her feel less alone by offering his home. “I’ll have to try it out and see how it goes, though before I get so bold, I’ll have to make a few practice rounds and have my expert taster tell me if they are up to snuff.” She teased. “I wouldn’t want to offer them if they didn’t feel authentic.”
“Thank you for making them.” She said as she continued her task with the sugar coating.
As told, Gareth did look away when Corinne reached out to take one of the cakes – though of course only for jokes. Hell, he wasn’t any better whenever he made Welsh cakes! They really rarely, if ever, survived the way from the kitchen to the living room, much less until the next day. They were small, delicious, and in the mouth within a second. Perfect little treats.
He couldn’t help the smile when he noticed Corinne leaving half of the cake for him on the side, and didn’t hesitate to pop it into his mouth. Now, he didn’t want to pat his own shoulder, but it tasted wonderful. “You like them?” he asked, just to be sure. He wasn’t a master chef or baker, and didn’t actually do it often, though he had learned to cook at a young age. He simply didn’t have the time or mood to cook after work.
Another batch was done, and he added it to the rest that were already cooling down on the counter. Two more, he figured, if he could squeeze them all into the pan. “It would be an honour to be your official Welsh cake tester,” Gareth admitted, shooting Corinne a playful smile. “But I don’t have any doubts you will make them perfectly on the first try. I have eaten your pastries, after all.” And god, they were delicious! Her bakery had quickly become his go-to point before work, and sometimes during lunchbreak. His secretary, Moneypenny, was licking her fingers after them as well. Some days he had to bring a few other employees some of Corinne’s goods when they found out he was going to her bakery, ending up in front of the counter with an entire shopping list.
“I love them!” She confirmed. “Such an amazing flavor from something so simple.” She added with a grin. Corinne worked on doing her part of the task so she wouldn’t be holding them up once Gareth finished making them.
She grinned at him when he said it would be an honor to be her taste tester. “Good, I can think of a better authority to make sure they are authentic and taste as good as the ones you make or at least close enough.”
Then she felt her cheeks warm at his compliments following his agreeing to assist her by being her taste tester. She was used to trying out new recipes, but not often something that was authentic to an area she was unfamiliar with. “Thank you. I’m really happy to know you like what I know how to make already. The confidence you have in my ability helps me want to be adventurous.” She was still finding her footing and learning about a new country, trying to fit in. She found it was nice to have Gareth being supportive.
“It’s been a bit intimidating to start over in a new place so soon, especially with the differences between the US and the UK.” She said quietly as she worked to coat each warm cake in the sugar. She smiled at the collection of treats they were amassing on the plate. “You’ve made it a little easier.” Corinne added with a smile at Gareth. Words she would have never imagined saying after their first meeting. Staying in his home had changed it in a way she couldn’t have predicted. “This arrangement has made me feel a lot less homesick. Notwithstanding the reason I needed a place to stay in the first place, of course.” She added softly, placing another completed cake on the pile.
“You’re quite fast and efficient.” Corinne noted as she stopped to watch for a few minutes. “Have you been making them a long time?” She wondered if it were similar to the way she picked up certain dishes from her mother and grandmother.
The way her voice was catching in her throat had his heart aching. “What we have means everything to me too,” he reflected quietly. “That time we had together kept me going. It gave me something to look forward to when I had nothing else.”
Aaron breathed in softly when she spoke her old name. It was a name that had held so much significance to him. He’d held it tightly in his heart as he’d been pulled all around the world to do terrible things. Even in the darkest moments, the loneliest stretches, he’d had Sarah. He’d become accustomed to her new name and it felt natural to call her by it now. But there would always be a particular fondness for Sarah.
He felt guilty that he’d derailed their evening into being about his own worries when it had begun with her expressing her own. But there she was, expressing how she’d trusted him with her heart. She may have hesitated in asking him to deal with her past for fear of the repercussions of his own actions, but she’d trusted him enough to share. Trusted his reaction. That soothed his heart more than he could adequately express. “I am happy you shared when you did,” he acknowledged softly. While he hadn’t wanted her to have to hold onto that alone, she had wisdom in shielding them both from any repercussions. There was no telling what it might’ve changed between them.
He saw the tears come to her eyes as he had begun to explain himself. Aaron worried that he had said too much. The last thing he’d wanted was to hurt her with his admission. He’d wanted to explain himself so she understood where the fears and worries had suddenly emerged from but he felt like he was hurting Corinne in the process. As he was considering trying to walk back his words, she was reaching out to him again. Her hand pressed lightly against his cheek brought an immediate warmth and comfort. By now, he should’ve expected her to be reaching for him when he felt least worthy of that comfort. Still, it surprised him and he was deeply grateful for her once again.
He frowned slightly as she apologized for someone hurting him. Aaron hadn’t truly considered it in that light despite it being exactly what happened. He had been hurt. The damage was clear and evident in the conversation they were currently having. There had been damage done by Outcome but somehow the thing that had kept him most hesitant, most reserved, most unwilling to take that next step with Corinne had always been the damage done by his broken heart.
He leaned into her touch as he stayed quiet to give her space to share what was on her mind. It only took a moment before the emotion was welling up. His chest was tight as everything threatened to spill over. The tears in her eyes made his heart ache even more. Her voice cracking had him reaching out to gently cup her face.
“Cory,” his voice was thick with emotion as he looked at her, his thumb lightly caressing her cheek. They hadn’t delved into those dark days when they both thought the other was no longer alive. He hurt for the past version of her that had believed him dead. Aaron had faced her death as he fought to hold onto his life as he knew it. It had only been later when he’d really grieved. Meanwhile, she’d lost everything all at once. “We don’t ever have to go back to that. I thought I lost you forever once, I never want to experience that again. When I left the cafe, that was hard enough. Being too far from you in this bed was bad enough,” there was the faintest return of that humor, a small flicker of a smile as he looked at her. God, he loved her.
There was part of him that found himself still wanting to argue with her and he wasn’t sure why. He wanted to insist that there was no way she could’ve chosen all of him. Not when she hadn’t seen every ugly corner of his past. She hadn’t seen it the way Marta had. The calculation, deception, manipulation, violence, and death. How could she choose all of him? Aaron wasn’t sure why he felt so compelled to get her to change her mind. The reality was it wouldn’t hurt any less if she rejected him in that moment or six months or a year or ten years later. The devastation would be monumental at any point.
I’m not going anywhere when things are tougher.
And like she often did, Corinne managed to find the words to soothe things that he hadn’t even voiced yet.
Aaron moved his hand away from her cheek and moved to gently take both of her hands into his. He gave them a gentle squeeze, thumb lightly caressing the top of her hand. “I need you to know something, Cory,” he paused to study her features for a moment. “I believe you mean what you say about me, about us,” he gave her hands another gentle squeeze. “I don’t doubt you. Not for a second.”
Having her hands in his grounded him, allowing him to parse through the wild flow of conflicting thoughts and emotions. “The hard part is believing that I deserve it,” he swallowed hard, “after everything.” His brow furrowed slightly, “after…” he sighed, “I didn’t blame her. It made sense that this was too much for anyone to deal with. That me, that I, was too much. That this was all too hard. It’s not easy to live with someone who is in their own head all the time. Or be with someone that can do the things I can do or think the way I do. It’s not fair sometimes…” he trailed off a slight frown lingering on his features.
“But what we have is different,” he offered softly, “the way I feel for you…” his voice caught in his throat again and he shook his head a little trying to ease the emotion, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life,” it seemed at odds with the intense emotions swirling but it didn’t change the fact, “and thinking about losing that got away from me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She closed her eyes for a moment when he reached out to cup her face, just taking it in and letting it ground her. There was something so calming in the way they reached out to each other. That gentle touch, just the connection to remind each other they were present, listening, offering solace. She lived for those, yearned to feel his hands on her skin as much as she needed to reach out for him in kind.
Her heart ached when he responded to her confessions about what she had gone through when they both believed they’d lost each other. Hearing him say he didn’t want to go through any of it again settled in deep, soothing that place where she’d pushed all that grief so she could go on rebuilding a life from the ashes of her old one. She hadn’t wanted to for longer than she cared to admit. To know they shared those same feelings made her feel a little less alone in it. The realization someone else understood somehow managed to lessen that sense of isolation she’d always felt along with all the other emotions surrounding that desolate period In her life. “I hate that we both had to experience what we did, but knowing you understand makes me feel less alone with what happened.”
When he brought that humor in as he often did, the smile pulled up the corners of her mouth as it always had. “I never thought even that small space between us in the bed would feel like a canyon.” She teased softly. “I don’t even know how or when that happened. How you got so far under my skin, We were worlds apart for so long and now even just a little bit of distance feels like too much.”
Her heart hurt all over again when Aaron said he questioned whether he deserved what they had. She felt that warmth from their clasped hands, and keeping her eyes on his, Corinne listened as he tried to find the words. She ached for what he’d gone through, thinking he’d found someone only to have her change her mind about staying with him. Getting to that point was something Corinne couldn’t fathom. “Aaron.” She said softly when he finished. “I can’t know what was in her head, but you mentioned that she knew you as the Outcome operative first. It is possible it colored her view or that somehow whatever happened during that time was something she couldn’t get passed? Maybe her trauma was tied up in that and you were a reminder of it.” She let out a breath, as he still held her hands in his and reluctant to disrupt that, she just moved hers slightly so he feel that connection between them, then she tried to explain what she saw from her perspective.
“What we had started in a very different way. I did what I had to do so I could still take of my patients which was the one thing I needed to hold onto and you were one of them. I couldn’t have possibly spent as much additional time as I had with Kenny had it not been for my position. I knew ultimately my employers could take that away in an instant, merely on a whim. What we had after you came back was something apart from who we worked for, a snatch of time where we could exist outside of it. That part of you that I got to know is what I began to fall for without even really realizing or recognizing it for what it was.” She said softly. “Those memories were what I held onto.”
But what we have is different
His words felt like she could suddenly breathe again. She hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath until he uttered those words and then it hit her how she’d tensed up as if waiting for the other shoe to drop. She’d feared he was having second thoughts about them staying together. As if he’d perhaps been expecting her to react in the same way as the woman before her and he wanted to act first. To hear him say he was the happiest he’d been settled deep into her heart filling all those broken places that still ached at times like old injuries would with shifts in the weather at times. It was immediately clear on her face while her features softened, the last traces of worry were falling away as she smiled. “I’m really happy to hear you say that because I am the happiest I’ve been as well. To be with someone who knows all those things I’ve not been able to share because it wasn’t safe, to have such a precious tie to my past, and to finally know what it feels like to fall in love is everything.” She admitted softly, her voice still threatening to break with the emotions tied into the moment.
She nodded when he explained what had caused his worry to drown out the other emotions at the same time. “It’s completely understandable given all that’s happened to you throughout your life.” She said with the same softness laced into her voice. “So many of the good things have come with a huge cost attached. Not everyone is able to handle the challenges or the hard parts. People have their breaking points, each one is different and hard to predict when those limits might hit or even what they might be.” She could still feel the reassuring weight of his hands holding hers, the way his thumb had stoked her skin, those familiar cues a constant reminder of how they both sought similar comforts. “You can always tell me if you’re feeling those worries, let me share them with you so you remember you’re not alone. We can see if we can dismantle them together.”
