The Final Fish
Blub blub
WIP photos... the veil. The sketch at the top is actually from a bit over two years ago when I was strangely obsessed with drawing these fish people, but it's what inspired the veil. Strange what images stick with you...
4/25/15 - Starting to feel fishy
3/26/15 - finally had a moment to print the patterns for the fish! I like the way the exposed netting turned out. Layering it on the fabric made an interesting pattern
Finished Lion Mask
Final Fox
3/22/15 - a preview of the finished masks. Will be posting more official photos soon
3/21/15 - what's left over from the print I used on the lion. The text is in ancient Greek, an excerpt from Euripides' tragedy The Bacchae. It is the part when the Mynads (including Penthus' mother, Agave) mistake Pentheus as a lion and tear him apart. I have been fascinated by this play for a while now and plan to use these masks in a surreal adaption over the summer.
3/21/15 - printed fabrics :)
3/21/15 - so the images seem pretty clear and hopefully will print nicely onto the fabric. I'm interested to see how the mesh turns out. I'm not sure it was exposed enough but we'll find out when I print tonight after work. I'm excited!
3/21/15 - Attempt 3! Seemed to go much better this time. For future reference, here are my steps: 1) layout images/ textures to print on exposure unit 2) place screen with dry emulsion over the images 3) turn on vacuum and expose (in my case 30seconds) 4) lightly hose off screen. The emulsion should come off where the images were exposed. 5) let dry Then it *should* be ready to print!
3/21/15 - How not to coat a screen? Nooot exactly sure what happened here but the emulsion became very gooey and started making bubbles…
Edit: I think the problem was the thickness of the emulsion. I had kind of half-applied it twice on one side because I didn't have enough emulsion in the scoop. It left gaps and I tried to fill it in by running more emulsion over the top
3/20/15 - Fish mask update. Dyed scrap fabric for scales and sewed a 'slip' for the base of the fish skin
3/20/15 - Fox mask update. Looove the way this tie dye turned out!
3/19/15 - Midnight printing! My designs drawn with a sharpie paint pen on mylar. I plan on overlapping some of the patterns by printing on separate pieces of sheer fabric.
3/18/15 - Tie Dye (something else I’ve never done before) Process. To do so, I simply twisted and bound my fabric with rubber bands, placed it in a baggie of water colored with acrylic ink, and lastly dried and ironed it (to hopefully set the ink). It is ready to print on!
