Spring is Coming

It is easy to look out in January and February thinking when will the winter end?

Luckily Cornwall is not as cold as many other parts of the UK. It may get a  lot of winds and possibly more rain, but temperature wise it is warmer, getting the warm air of the gulf stream.

So when you want to enjoy an early Spring, book that holiday in Cornwall, walk on a beach or coastal path, breathe in that fresh sea air and feel rejuvenated.

Half Term Holidays

Well West is Best seems to have been the verdict on the Half Term holiday weather. While the East and North of the UK have had low pressure rain all over the place, Cornwall in comparison has been pretty good. (Obviously, good weather is something we cannot guarantee !!)

Affordable Family Holidays in Cornwall

Lets face it, the economic situation has been tough over the last few years, but we all want and deserve a holiday break.

Family holidays don't have to cost the earth and if you can travel slightly out of the high summer season (school permitting) the holidays can be cheaper. Even in the height of summer, there can be last minute deals available.  

So what are the best options? Well Cornwall has a number of caravan and camping holiday parks. If you rent a static caravan it can be reasonably priced, while if you have your own caravan or tent it would be considerably cheaper. Some of the holiday parks in Cornwall have great facilities for children with pools, kids clubs and other entertainment which can make the parents have a more relaxing holiday.

Cornwall also has a large selection of B&Bs, some of which are very reasonably priced, so that may be an option, particularly for a weekend break.

Depending on your age and preferences, there are also a few hostels and surf shacks around. Obviously the idea of sleeping in a communal room isn't for everyone, but if there is a group of young people it might be the ideal choice.

Hotels in Cornwall

Have you ever fancied staying in an old smugglers inn that is hundreds of years old. You wake up in the morning to the sound of the sea and the bracing sea air. Cornwall has a good selection of inns and a whole variety of other hotel accommodation.

If your budget will allow, Cornwall has a few very upmarket boutique hotels where the style and decorations are to a high level. Other traditional upmarket hotels also cater for luxury hotel breaks in Cornwall, with saunas, pools and gyms.

Most people will end up staying in a more budget concious hotel or bed and breakfast. Overall the standards at the hotels in Cornwall are very good across the board, so whether you are on a weekend break or longer, you should be spoilt for choice.

Popular Attractions in Cornwall

Although most areas tend to have some interesting places, historic houses, theme parks and ancient monuments, Cornwall seems to have more than most. On this blog we look at the best known attractions in Cornwall.

Top of the list in terms of profile is the Eden project. Located close to St Austell the Eden Project was built in a former clay industry. It combines garden displays / environmental exhibitions with the arts and media to make it a fun day out for all of the family.

Cornwall has a number of theme and family parks that include Flambards, Crealy and Holywell Bay fun park amongst others. A lot of the parks include animal interactions for the children.

Being far in the South West of England has the most Southerly point of the UK mainland the Lizard and the most South Westerly point Lands End. Land's End has become the more popular place to visit as it has a larger profile, being the starting or ending point of many trips across the country, such as the Olympics torch relay in 2012. Land's End is a pay to enter site with nice cliff scenes and a small family theme park with exhibits and a few rides for the children.

St Michael's Mount in Marazion is a beautiful small island, one mile from the mainland that can be walked to when the tide is out. It has a historic house on the top.

The Minack theatre is an open air theatre carved into the cliff near Porthcurno. There are plays and musicals throughout the summer months, but the main attraction is the stunning backdrop of the Sea.

Cornwall was the centre of the UK tin mining industry and there are a number of mining heritage sites, some that combine exhibitions with family activities like Heartlands near Camborne.

Cornwall also has a number of castles, historic houses, buildings and gardens to visit. These include Tintagel Castle in North Cornwall, Chysauster  (Iron age village in West Cornwall), the Lost Gardens of Helligan in South East Cornwall and many more.

Cornwall Cottages

One of the most popular type of accommodation for holidays in Cornwall are holiday cottages. A lot of visitors enjoy the home comforts with the ability to cook for themselves and come and go as they please. Although there are a good number of traditional cottages in Cornwall available, there are also other types of holiday homes including luxurious new purpose built apartments. We can't promise that all of the cottages are thatched and as pretty as the one in the photo, (which is not actually one that we advertise), but there are some lovely ones amongst them.

So where do you stay for your cottage holiday in Cornwall? There are a large number of properties throughout Cornwall so it is up to you. Obviously most people like to be near the sea, but In Cornwall you are never more than 30 miles from the sea and most places are far less. Choose from a country or fishing village, seaside resort of market town.

So what is the best time to visit? Obviously we are biased and would say all year round. Most people visit in the summer, but spring and autumn are also good times. In the winter the days are shorter, but then some people like the idea of a cosy cottage and dark nights in the local village pubs when there are fewer visitors.
