Trump’s Campaign Has Had More Reboots Than A Marvel Superhero
Let’s call that first time Trump came down the escalator the original Spider-Man (starring Tobey Maguire in his prime).
In February, CBS reported that Trump was hitting “the reset button.” Think of this as the first Trump sequel...or, Spider-Man 2.
After that, it came time to “pivot to the general election,” as Bloomberg put it.
Trump was going to go into “statesman mode” or something...
Then, in a CNN town hall, Trump said on changing his tone: “Oh, I’m very capable of doing it. It’s easy to do it.”
Reuters even reported that Trump was taking steps to “reset his campaign” and “soften his image.”
But, like Spider-Man 4, this reboot never made it past the planning stage.
By May, it was official: “Trump turns to general election,” the Washington Post reported.
Just like in 2012, fans rejoiced: Spider-Man was back!
The only problem with The Amazing Spider-Man was...Andrew Garfield, according to Andrew Garfield.
When that reboot didn’t go so well, Trump fired a top aide, Corey Lewandowski, in “an urgent move.” It was going to be for real this time. As RealClearPolitics put it, “Trump’s Move Signals a Restart to His Campaign.”
Spider-Man was going to be better than ever in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Trump even gave a serious, scripted speech. But, just like Garfield’s second outing, it was a flop. Commentators called Trump’s speech “low-energy.”
Something just wasn’t working. As Trump puts it, Republicans had to figure out “What is going on?” GOP Chairman Reince Priebus insisted that “the Trump pivot is definitely coming”—one week before the GOP Convention.
They realized that the solution was the same one Sony executives found: their hero could not be alone. Just as Spider-Man would join the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, Trump needed a running mate.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump is attempting yet another reboot.
Just like Spider-Man: Homecoming, planned for release in 2017, we’ll have to see how this one goes. We’re not holding out hope for Trump’s success, but...
