On the kitchen counter sits a bottle of wine tied with a bow and a small envelope containing a card with a cat that looks nearly identical to Holly wearing a party hat. The card reads:
HAVE A PURRFECT BIRTHDAY!
Happy Birthday, Mycroft - Let's celebrate with cake and champagne on the beach of your choice. Pick a resort and I'll treat. Bonus points if you pick a week where snow's in the forecast back home(s).
You're another year older (and perhaps wiser, but the jury's out on that one). You're getting sexier with age, as one does. I'm a prime example, of course. I'm proud of you and all you've accomplished in the last year.
I love you very much and I'm looking forward to spending the day with you.

mycroft can't help but chuckle at the card. leave it to john to not only find a card like that but to give it to him for his birthday. it's sweet and it causes a warm feeling to flood his stomach. god, he does love that man a lot.
he wrinkles his nose at the mention of cake on a beach. the champagne sounds lovely though. maybe they'll find a private one again. those are always lovely for... various reasons. completely... normal reasons.
out of the corner of his eyes, he notices john poke his head out from around a corner. he doesn't acknowledge him. not yet, at least. he hums at the rest of the card, both in agreement ( yes, john is sexy ) and also disagreement ( he is very wise. he doesn't know what he's talking about ).
mycroft closes the card and looks back at john, a soft smile on his face. "i love you too, dove. and thank you for the lovely gift."

He was practically an infant compared to her, but despite the fact he craved a political advantage and loved to play games- well, the Gentleman with the Icy demeanour warmed her heart a little. They hadn’t crossed paths for a while, Alex had spent some time abroad. Every century or so though, the taverns of London called her back to the city. It was more of a home than anywhere else. And it always seemed so… large. So much larger than the Roman ruins she had helped to set ablaze in her first lifetime.
Dressed in men’s clothes and a travelling cloak, the golden rings on her fingers glinted in the firelight as she raised the goblet to her lips. The stained that remained wasn’t wine, despite the deep shade of crimson. She sat back on the bench, enjoying the noise and the cracking fire. “You haven’t aged a day.” Of course he hadn’t, neither of them would. Age and beauty would be a constant, if they were lucky.
“Tell me of the petty squabbles I have missed,” This was her way of caring, of asking about his life. Not that she cared as much as it had been too long since she had a real conversation.
it wasn't often that mycroft actually ran into things like him. they weren't people, let alone humans. maybe monsters, but even mycroft wouldn't go that far. some days, he would. but not today. she was once of the few that he didn't mind coming across. she was brash, but she wasn't annoying. and it was nice having someone older than him for a change.
he chuckles, bring his own glass to his lips. "if only we could. i bet i'd still be hot as an old man." not that he'd ever know. it was almost a pity. almost. being stuck looking young had its perks, especially in politics. it come with its own fair share of flaws too, but those mycroft could easily fix. "and you look as dashing as ever. you must give me your skincare routine." he's joking, of course.
"there's a couple like us over in the east end." mycroft puts his glass down, looking at her for the first time. "they're harmless. one's a professor, the other's a doctor." mostly harmless, but she really didn't need all the details.

"Mycroft Siger Holmes," he murmurs, approaching him from behind with two glasses on wine in hand. Truth be told, this party's gone on a little too long and John's managed to overdo himself just a little. "I was wondering, Mycroft Siger Holmes, when you plan on introducing me to the very important fellow who lives at 10 Downing Street." He tries his best to look accusatory, all while the room is spinning and he wants nothing more than to settle into Mycroft's arms. "And by that I mean, of course, Larry. You know Larry, right? Of course you know Larry. You're holding out on me, baby."
"john... henchman. do you not have a middle name? i should know this as your husband. why don't i know this about you?" he wraps an arm around his waist, pulling john against him, but careful to not spill his wine. "i don't know of you're ready for that, mister henchman. but maybe i'll see if he's available if you're good." he watches his husband closely, carefully taking the glasses out of his hand and placing them on a table. john had definitely overdone it. "of course i know larry. how about we go meet him now?"

"You're such a fucking cynic, aren't you?" Jack grimaces at the mention of dying when he was supposed to. When was that, exactly? Surely Mycroft didn't truly think Jack would have survived long enough to be properly old. Because he didn't. "He did lose me, you idiot. I died in his goddamn arms for fuck's sake and he had to go on for over one hundred years without me, thinking my death was all his fault. He sure as hell didn't want that to happen again, but that doesn't mean he wanted me to be turned. That was all my decision. And, no, I didn't beg. I don't beg."
"We had our share of fun when I was human, Mycroft. And by fun, of course, I mean regrettable illegal activity." He forces himself to take a long breath in and exhale it. Something about Mycroft Holmes irritated the everliving hell out of him. "I'm glad you've finally found someone capable of putting up with your shit. I commend him. Good for you."
"when you live as long as i have, it's hard to not be a cynic." he's seen too much. experienced too much. and he wouldn't wish this life upon his worst enemy. and if he wasn't such a coward, he'd probably do something to change it. but he's still, unfortunately, here. at least he gets to annoy jack in the process. "oh, i'm sorry. was i supposed to feel sorry for either of you? or are we sharing our sob stories? because, no, you haven't reach that level of friendship for that one. so sorry, jackie boy." he let out a soft hum. "he still should have told you no."
mycroft snorts, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. "of course you did the illegal shit. that so... like you." a smile pokes at the corner of his lips. he may hate his life sometimes, but damn did he enjoy pissing jack off. there was something special about it. "i am, too. it's nice. i can get why you get so upset when i flirt with des. not that i'll stop but, you know, i get it."

"You know you didn't need to move to Boston, right?" John's leaning against the front doorframe, arms folded across his chest. "We could make trans-Atlantic visitations work." A pause. "As in you could fly over here from London for visits. Not sure the girls are old enough to travel there on their own just yet. Though I'm not sure they'll ever be old enough for that." The distinct sound of adolescent bickering comes from inside the house and John ignores it completely. "You've never liked Boston, anyway. I'm sure you'd be happier across the pond."
"if this is your way of saying you no longer want me around, then just say that. don't try to word it as if you care about me or my happiness." mycroft knew that was too harsh, but he's done enough of beating around the bush and he's tired of it. "look, i get it. coming to boston was stupid. but the girls are here." you're here. "--- and i'd rather not miss anymore of their lives than i already have. it'll be easily if i'm within, at least, this state. maybe i'll leave boston in a few months." he could even possibly leave the state, as long as he stayed within the country. "would that be better for you then?"

“But you’ll agree that some times suck more than others, correct?” He’s not trying to be difficult and, to an extent, he does agree with Mycroft, but he’s so used to pushing back on the statements made by his lovely students during his lectures as an attempt to make them really think that he can’t help it. It’s summer and he’s a little more bored than usual. “So either you’re of the opinion that you’re living through the best days of your life, which doesn’t sound right with your statement on how every time sucks, or the good old days were, in fact, the good old days.”
"if you want to be pedantic about it, sure. some days are better than others. but for the most part, it's all bad, prof." sometimes he really hated dealing with this professor. he was annoying and just the worst. what he did know about 'better days,' the man had to be no older than himself, if not somehow younger. and how could he understand. he has to be no older than twenty-five, and teaching a college level course. a lot of things have had to go right in his life. "that statement doesn't even make sense. the good old days are a myth. it's just people misremembering all the shit that actually was happening in their lives. times are always bad, people just will themselves for forget that and only remember the good."
