Jin/Lily/Ren
Jin x Ren Aesthetic
The aestheic itself isn’t mine, but was made by a close friend and fan! Lines taken from a fanfic shared only between me and some friends of mine.
Both characters are from a story of mine called Corrupt Forest, that's posted both on this Tumblr, Penana, and Fictionpress.com.
Chapter 10: Coping With Changes
Leliana’s vision slowly came into focus as she woke up on the bed in her tent. She looked around the space, as if it was unfamiliar to her. She supported herself with her elbows, lifting and eventually sitting body up on the edge of the bed. She managed to stand, and started to stretch, her bones giving off a satisfying crack as they loosened up. She heard the flaps to her tent open up, revealing Ryn, holding an object made of brown leather in her hands.
“Hi, Ryn,” Leliana greeted. “When did we get back to the base?”
Ryn jumped at the sound of her voice, she hadn’t realized she was awake. She looked over at Leliana with wide eyes, and shaking hands as she clutched the leather.
“L-Lily… You shouldn’t be standing yet, you should lay down until you regain your strength. The…events of last night weren’t good for any of us.” Ryn said, trying to keep a calm tone as she gestured for Leliana to lay back on the bed.
Leliana wouldn’t budge. The events Ryn spoke of all came rushing back. She fought the impulse to touch her eye socket. She turned away from Ryn.
“Get me a mirror, please.” Leliana said.
“I assure you, it’s not as bad as y-” Ryn started.
“Please, Ryn.”
She could feel Ryn’s stare on her, until she finally heard a reluctant reply.
“Yes, Lily.”
She returned with a hand mirror, slightly dirty and dusty, as it had been sitting at the back of the camp’s storage tent unused. It was clean enough for her to see what she had wanted to. This time she gave in to the need to touch it. The now forever closed eyelid that had held her left eye. It had small scars around it, ugly, pink scars where claws had scraped at it to get to the eyeball under. Now, tears started to drop, washing some of the dust off the old mirror. Ryn tapped her on the shoulder, making her jump from forgetting that the girl was there. Ryn held out the brown leather object she was holding, and Leliana took it with a dismissive nod. Ryn left without a word. Only once she was sure the other girl was gone, did she put on the eyepatch.
=====================================
Ryn’s next stop was to Anubis. His fresh bandages were already starting to look too bloody to keep on, but the camp only had so many. His eyes hadn’t been completely taken out, but they were sliced open to the point that they might as well have been. He seemed to be adjusting to being without sight well enough, but Ryn still had trouble telling whether this was bravado, or if he really was already numb to the fact that he’d never see again.
“You haven’t touched your berries or jerky.” Ryn pointed out.
“I’m not hungry.”
Ryn looked down in deep thought. “…I could feed y-”
“I don’t need to be fed.” It came out more harshly than he meant it to. But he didn’t care. Admittedly, it felt good to snap at someone after yesterday. If only he wasn’t given a shot of guilt as his reward. “Sorry.” he added, with a sigh.
“I under-… Well, I can’t say I understand what you’re going through.” Ryn said, shrugging. “Only you know how you feel, and yesterday was a lot for anyone to take in. You gonna be okay?”
“I’ll be fine.” he said.
=====================================
“It’d be much more of a nuisance to go searching for a new heir, when she’s got a perfectly broken one right here!”
“Be who you really are! A monster.”
“You desperately try to run away from your fate, try to be merciful to humans. Try to be human.”
The pixie’s words echoed through his head. He didn’t have a nightmare while he was passed out, but he almost wished he did. As if the guilt that made his head hurt wasn’t enough. As soon as he got out of bed that morning, he headed straight to the stream. It used to calm him when he found he couldn’t sleep, or when he found his thoughts heading towards…dark places.
He watched as the small waves splashed against the smooth gray rocks. The mini waterfall that led into the stream made a peaceful babbling noise. For a second, he really did feel relaxed. He felt so unlike the merciless war machine he was raised to be. He sighed out loud.
He didn’t want to admit that the pixies were right. Didn’t want to admit that he wasn’t the least bit human. He really didn’t want to admit that his mother might have broken him a long time ago. Her teaching went bone-deep, every lesson on combat, flight, and war strategy, it all sunk in to make him her perfect, little, obedient minion.
“Jin!”
Jin turned his head, being shocked out of his meditation. Ryn ran up to him, sitting down beside him and catching her breath.
“When I realized…you weren’t in your tent…I searched everywhere for you!” Ryn panted.
“I wanted to be alone.” Jin muttered.
“That’s no way to live.” she teased. “Not for you, anyway. You’re not the tough, brooding, loner type.”
“How do you know that?”
“If you were, you would’ve dropped us a long time ago. Now, what are you doing out here alone?”
“I-I just…couldn’t face them. Not after doing what I did. Anubis is blind, Ryn, and Lily had her eye ripped out. Both caused by me. I don’t even know where’d I start, if I talked to them.”
“How about you stop feeling sorry for yourself, and come back to camp?” Ryn asked.
“I’m being serious, Ry-”
“So am I! The best thing for you to do is to get back to camp, and get back to work on finding us a way out of here. I’m not saying that you should act like nothing’s wrong. Just that you shouldn’t let it get in your way.” Ryn placed a supportive hand on Jin’s shoulder. “You’re strong in the real way. What happened last night wasn’t your fault, I refuse to believe you did that of your own free will. Just know that, none of us think any less of you because of it. Continue being the leader we know you are, and before long everything will be going much more smoothly.”
Jin just stared into the stream, watching the water as it flowed past.
“Nothing will ever be like normal.” he said, still not looking at her.
“No, but we’ll make this our new normal. Keep moving forward, and all that.” Ryn swallowed a lump in her throat. “I’ll admit though, this is a tall hill we’ve got to climb over. But, we’re not doing anything by just sitting here talking about what we should do. What do you say w-”
Her words were cut off by lips being pressed against hers. Her eyes widened, and she instinctively shoved Jin away.
“What are you doing?” Ryn yelled, standing up.
“Sorry, I guess I’m just not used to anyone treating me so…equally. Before I was the high and mighty Corrupted Prince to my mother, a waste of corrupted DNA to corrupts who thought they deserved the title more, and now neither Anubis or Lily, the closest things to friends are gonna want anything to do with me.” Jin forced a lighthearted grin. “Then again, maybe it’s just the effects of going eighteen years without seeing another human being finally getting to me.”
She playfully slapped him upside his head. But, before she could say a word in reply, Leliana dashed into the small clearing.
“Ryn! Anubis left the base!” she announced.
“What? Why didn’t you follow him?” Ryn asked.
“I tried, but he knows the areas better than I do! I lost him. I don’t know how he managed to get so far without being able to see! I didn’t know what else to do but to find you.” Leliana said, her breathing making it sound like she was having a panic attack.
Jin was already on his feet. “Come on! He couldn’t have gotten that far. Can you tell us which way he went?”
Leliana gave a nod, and started to lead the way. Jin grabbed her arm. “It was dangerous enough for you to travel this far alone. Especially in your…condition. Let me lead, just point me in the right direction.” he said, softly.
She looked away, and this time, she hesitated before finally nodding.
=====================================
Anubis may have been blind, but he still knew the layout of the forest. In mere minutes, he had already managed to leave camp all on his own. His hearing warned him to stray away from certain areas where he heard the distinct growl of a primitive corrupted beast. It wasn’t Ragnarok, or else the ground would be rumbling under his feet. He didn’t waste time thinking about who it could be, instead feeling his way forward into a clearing.
Then, right into the side of a big boulder. He scolded himself for his lack of attention to his surroundings, just because he couldn’t see didn’t mean he could keep making these mistakes. He tried to feel his way around it, and soon realized it wasn’t a boulder. It was the side of a stone cave. He could feel the rocky interior, and hear the distant drops of water that fell from the top. He started to wonder if he was further away from camp then he thought. That was when Anubis felt a claw touch his shoulder, and he sharply spun around, fangs bared.
“Easy, easy!” a voice said. It was a corrupt. Going by it’s deep voice, Anubis could only assume it belonged to a male.
“Stay away!” Anubis demanded. “I’m not looking for a fight.” he added. He lowered his defensive stance, but didn’t completely let his guard down.
“I’m not gonna hurt you. I have no reason to!” the voice said, it had a strangely kind tone for a corrupt. “If anything I should be the hostile one. I mean, you are inside my home after all.”
“…Sorry.” Anubis finally said. “I’m used to facing much more violent corrupts.”
“Well, I’ve never been one for fighting, in fact, it’s the reason I’m down here. As a pup, I refused to be involved in battle training.” he explained. “The only reason I’ve lived here so long is by being nomadic, moving from a cave one day to an underground hideout the next. I’m never in one place long enough to attract attention from the beast-”
The corrupt was interrupted by a crack of lightning, and Anubis could feel cold wind blow past him. “I think the second worst part about this place is the weird weather patterns. It was perfectly fine just a second ago.” he muttered. “Anyway, you better get deeper into the cave, sounds like a big storm’s coming.”
“I should be getting back to my own camp, the others might be worri-”
“I insist! It’s warmer than it seems in this place.”
Anubis hesitated, as the storm clouds seemed to get closer. “…Fine.” he said. “What’s your name, anyway?”
“The name’s Tak!”
=====================================
As Anubis and Tak took refuge in the cave, and the others looked for him with no idea where he was, the queen chuckled darkly on her throne in the corrupt mansion. Her assistant sat at her side, looking up at her in delight.
“For every failure comes a great success, Acantha!” The queen said. “The assassin has yet to return with my son’s head, yet the pixies did one better. Nothing like psychological damage to lower morale, isn’t that right dear?”
“Yes, your highness. Before long, his allies will fall, and he’ll have no choice but to come crawling back to his destiny!” Acantha replied, with a cheerful hiss.
“Why wait? I already have one of my more primitive beasts down there with an animalistic desire for blood.” Acantha tilted her head in confusion. The queen chuckled at her oblivious reaction. “You’ll see soon enough, my loyal pet.”
Acantha stared down at her panther claws, and ran her forked tongue over her python fangs. She wasn’t an ordinary house cat, and thus, didn’t like to be referred to as a ‘pet’. But, for her beloved queen, she bit her tongue.

Chapter 9: A Magical Night: Part 3
It felt like Jin had been walking through the same area countless times. This forest could be a maze at times, but it usually had landmarks here and there. Here, wherever ‘here’ was, there was no difference in the scenery that told if he was making any progress. It must be another pixie illusion. He was growing too tired to even yell in frustration like he had wanted to. He wanted nothing more than to wake up back at camp. To sigh in relief after finding out that all this headache-inducing irritation was just another nightmare. To work on reinforcing defenses with Anubis, Ryn and… Leliana.
He had forgotten that they were even supposed to be looking for her. How long had he been walking? The pixie said she was with the corrupted assassin, could he have…killed her by now?
Jin quickly shook the thought away. Making sure that he stopped walking in circles was his top priority. He could find his way back to the others faster and much more easily if he could fly, but his wings were still ‘hilariously small’, and couldn’t lift him at all. Thankfully, his claws were still in working order. After slashing through thin trees and vines, he finally found himself in another clearing. He barely had a chance to sigh in relief before he realized that it was the same clearing he had been in to begin with.
“Lost?”
The voice sounded mature and elegant, with the same echoing voice that all corrupts had. He nearly jumped up in surprise when he realized that there was a pixie on his shoulder. It wasn’t the boyish-looking one though, it wore a robe-like dress made of twigs, and curly hair almost as long as it was tall. He distinctly remembered it as being just as childish and annoying as it’s siblings, so why did it seem so calm now? He looked at it with narrowed eyes.
“What do you want now? Your… brother or whatever it is, already showed me my 'fated future’, so why don’t you all ju-!” Jin was cut off as the pixie flew in front of him, and touched a clawed finger to his forehead.
====================================
Images flashed before his eyes, memories he didn’t remember having started to play in his head.
“W-What are you doing? What’s gotten into you?” Leliana asked, taking slow steps away from him.
“Leliana?” Jin muttered under his breath in reality.
Jin tried to look around in the illusion, as if he was really there. It being in the format of a memory, he couldn’t see anymore than where he was looking when it took place. Except it hadn’t taken place yet…so maybe it was another look into the future? Point is, he couldn’t see where he was, as he was glaring at the cowering human female. He was apparently seeing it through his future self’s eyes? It all hurt his brain to think too much about.
“Power, plain and simple.” Jin replied. “You being a full human, you could never understand how good it feels to have the powers of a demigod. To have not only one, but two species under my control, as well as the best parts of both of them. Being the way I am, I’m more powerful than a corrupt or a human.”
The words weren’t his own, but he could feel his mouth moving to say them. Could feel the passion behind them as he raised his clawed hand, no, as the 'future Jin’ raised his clawed hand. Then, he could feel the disdain as he stared at the vision of Leliana. She seemed so much more submissive than he remembered her being, so much more…inferior to him.
“But, that doesn’t mean that you never could if you…enhanced yourself.”
“…What?” The girl said.
“Back when my mother ran things, there was no way to perfectly combine human and corrupt DNA. I was a freak of nature, or as I like to think, born more superior than the average human.”
He started to pace around her, narrowing his eyes as he examined her from head to toe. Without stopping, he continued his speech.
“But, ever since I took over, I’ve been working on something that would solve that problem. An injection just diluted enough that it won’t fully corrupt even the weakest human. Instead, it would turn them into something much more useful, superior, power-”
Jin paused in his monologue to catch a punch Leliana had thrown at him. He gave an amused smirk at the attempt, before digging his claws into her closed fist. She let out a soundless squeak that would’ve been a scream if she hadn’t been feeling so weak.
“You’re right, I never was a fan of words. Always been a man of action.” he said, not letting go of her, now bleeding, hand. “I guess this means that you aren’t interested in being my halfling queen?”
“N…Ngh…N-Never!” she yelled out.
Jin gave a sigh, with a shake of his head. “Then, I suppose it’s time to do what I should’ve done years ago.” he growled.
It went by so fast, Jin wasn’t completely sure his strike hit it’s target, until he saw the blood run down from the human woman’s throat. She gasped and coughed up blood, finally falling to the ground once he let go of her hand. He figured he’d feel something from her death, satisfaction, pride that one more obstacle was out of his way, maybe even disappointment over the loss of a potential bride. But, he felt nothing as he walked away from her.
====================================
Jin hadn’t realized he was grinding his teeth, or that his fists were clenched so hard his knuckles were turning white, until the illusion was over. The pixie was still fluttering in front of his face, it’s expression still eerily calm for a pixie corrupt. It didn’t even flinch when he wrapped his fist around it.
“Why would you show me that? What was that?” Jin demanded.
“I was only showing you what would happen, if you were to continue down this path.” the pixie answered.
“What are you talking abou-”
Another tap on the forehead, and false memories filled his mind again.
====================================
This time, he knew exactly where he was. He was sitting on the large throne that overlooked the main room of the corrupt castle. There were two lines of corrupts, one to the left and right, waiting in silence. Before long, two more corrupts burst through the double doors of the throne room, dragging another along with them. It was thrown roughly onto the ground, before it got to it’s feet, breathing hard. It was Anubis. He may have been bleeding, but since corrupted blood is black, it was nearly impossible to tell against Anubis’ dark fur.
“Long time, no see, buddy!” Jin greeted, a mock-joyful smile plastered on his face. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” he added, his sarcastic grin quickly turning into a cold scowl.
“What… What do you…want from me, Jin?” Anubis panted, sending a piercing glare towards Jin.
“It’s. The. Corrupted. King!” he replied.
On the last word, Jin’s vision turned bright purple, and he raised a glowing hand up, before swiftly slashing it back down. Anubis was surrounded in a purple aura, and before he could realize what was happening, he was brought down to his knees in a kneeling position.
“What…was that?” Jin found himself saying in reality. Had he inherited his mother’s magic? No. He didn’t care. This wasn’t him, and it would never be him.
Anubis growled as he tried to resist the magic aura, to no avail. Jin got up from the throne, stepping towards Anubis, still acting as if he was greeting a friend. When he released Anubis from the aura, he didn’t so much as flinch when Anubis attempted to leap at him. Mostly because as soon as he tried, the two guards that dragged him into the room held him down.
“Anubis, Anubis…” Jin sighed, shaking his head. “Resorting to recklessly throwing yourself at opponents much stronger than you? No wonder we finally got our hands on you.”
“You 'got your hands on me’, because you threatened to kill Tak if I didn’t show myself.” Anubis said, with a scowl.
“Who…?” Jin muttered in reality.
“Stop talking! You’re disrupting the illusion.” the pixie snapped.
“Tak?” Jin had a confused expression for a split second, before smirking in his realization. “Ah yes, that other corrupt you’re so fond of. They’re fine. Living comfortably deep in my dungeons. I wonder if I remembered to send food to the cell… Ah, they could probably go another week. That’s not what I brought you here for anyway. It occurred to me that you could be a threat to me.”
“How? You’ve already proven how easily you can capture me. How could I be a threat to you?” Anubis asked.
“Don’t play dumb. I know about the little rebellion you’ve been planning along with our old friends ever since Leliana fell by my hand. Can’t risk you or any of the others being a hero, now can I?” Jin said, as he gently grabbed both sides of Anubis’ head, digging his claws in enough to draw blood. “With that said, goodbye.”
His grip tightened, and with a strong pull upwards while simultaneously digging his claws further into the corrupts skull, a satisfying, sickly, wet snap was heard. The corrupt’s body fell limp to the ground, and Jin nonchalantly tossed Anubis’ head over his shoulder, allowing two rat-like corrupts to feast on it.
====================================
A wave of nausea fell over Jin, and he fought to not puke where he stood. He reached out to grab the pixie, which fluttered just out of his reach each time.
“Tell me why you’re showing me this!” Jin demanded.
“Still don’t understand? This is why corrupted royalty can never have allies. Especially not humans and rouge corrupts. In the end, you will succumb to the power that comes with being the Corrupted King after defeating your mother. In the end, you will kill all you’ve come to know as your 'friends’. The redheaded girl, the corrupt rogue, the dark-haired girl, and a few more that I’d prefer not to spoil the surprise about. They will all fall under your superior power.” the pixie replied. The obnoxious, fang exposing grin that the pixies were known for was spread on it’s face.
With a loud roar, Jin tried to claw at the pixie in frustration. Something knocked him to the ground, it felt like a strong wind. He hit the ground hard, and found himself unable to get back up. The pixie tauntingly smiled down at his face. He was just about to test if he could blow the thing away with his breath, when he heard a familiar voice.
“…Jin? W-Why…?”
He looked up, his body still pressed against the ground, and his eyes widened in horror. Leliana, Anubis, even Ryn, whose death he hadn’t witnessed, were standing there in front of him. But, they weren’t as he remembered them. Leliana had four long scars across her throat where he had ripped it out. Anubis’s head was crudely sewn back on to his body. Ryn, however, was the most haunting. He didn’t see him kill her, because he hadn’t killed her. Her torso had entire chunks bitten out of it. He guessed that other corrupts had gotten to her, probably before he even turned evil.
He wanted to scream, to swear loudly, to have some kind of guilt-ridden reaction, but he couldn’t find the energy to do any of it, a different energy fueled him. The energy that allowed him to fight against the invisible chains keeping him on the ground. The adrenaline that allowed him to give an inhuman roar as he lunged at the illusions.
“You…are not…real!” Jin panted, trying to attack them, but his claws only caught air. “You’re NOT them!”
The illusions were like water, only rippling when his claws did hit their mark. Their hurt expressions only filled him with more rage.
====================================
“I hear something coming from the east path.” Anubis announced.
“Do you think it might be Jin?” Leliana asked.
“Most likely, and it sounds as if he’s in danger.”
That’s all that the trio needed to start running down the right pathway. Ren still going unnoticed as he silently followed after them.
====================================
Jin’s anger was the only thing keeping him from growing tired as he hopelessly slashed at the illusions. He didn’t care that none of what he was doing was affecting them. He wanted them to go away. To stop impersonating his teammates. He didn’t even notice the pixies watching him from the trees.
“This is bo-ring!” The boyish pixie groaned.
“Couldn’t you have made illusions that fight back?” The one in the dress sighed.
“Things are about to get much more interesting, my siblings.” The robed pixie replied.
As if on cue, Leliana, Ryn, and Anubis burst into the clearing. The pixies collectively grinned at each other, before turning into black fog. Jin’s blind rage turned to confusion. The illusions had disappeared. Had he defeated them?
No, they hadn’t disappeared, just changed. They didn’t have any wounds anymore, so they looked even more like his allies. He didn’t care, he wouldn’t go any easier on them for making him feel so damn guilty. He pounced at the one that looked like Leliana first.
The illusion stood there, stunned. The other two grabbed him, holding him down and pinning him to the ground. He didn’t know they could fight back. They looked down at him in concern, and the one that looked like Ryn may have said something, but his mind was too far away to hear it. He dug his claws into the two of them, forcing them to let him go.
'Ryn’ said something more, her hands up as if trying to calm him. He incapacitated her with a roundhouse kick, making her fall to the ground with a bruise quickly forming on her head. 'Anubis’ slashed at his back, he yelled in pain, swiftly turned, and drew his claws across the illusions eyes. It screamed out, stumbling back and leaving itself wide open for a hard punch from Jin, causing it to drop to the ground as well.
The last one, 'Leliana’ was shaking as she tried to pull out her sword. Jin rushed towards her, but was hit from behind with a powerful kick from above. He wobbled as he tried to stand, looking over at his attacker. It was the corrupted assassin from before. Before Jin could ask what he was doing here, or even try to attack him, he was picked up and lifted into the air, courtesy of the assassin’s wings. He planned to drop Jin from high up.
Before he let them get too high, Jin elbowed the corrupt’s stomach, making him loosen his grip on him. Jin fell to the ground, thankful that his bone structure was stronger than a human’s. As the assassin descended back towards him, Jin threw a high kick up, knocking the corrupt away with relative ease. He brought his attention back to the Leliana clone, with a vicious growl he tackled her to the ground.
She looked up at him with terrified, tear-filled eyes. The gray, almost silver irises taunted him. Reminded him of the real Leliana. Without another second of hesitation, he brought a claw down, digging for his target, and ignoring her screams and the sick, wet sound as he pulled out his prize. 'Leliana’ fainted as he stood. He thought it was for the best, he couldn’t stand to hear her voice coming from a copy.
Jin threw back his head and called out, “Where are they, pixies? Why waste my time with mockeries?!”
All three appeared on his shoulders, grinning obnoxiously. The boyish one spoke first. “How do humans say it? They’re…right under your nose.”
Jin froze up, his mind finally clearing of the bloodlust that previously ran through it. He couldn’t will himself to look down. To look at what he had done. His shaky hand dropped the eyeball. The last thing he heard before passing out was the shrill, sadistic laughter of the pixies.

Chapter 8: A Magical Night Part 2
Leliana carefully stepped around the thorns protecting Ren's cave. By some miracle, he hadn't noticed her leave, as he was preoccupied with shuffling through his storage. She'd taken one of the blades he had along with his other supplies, no doubt taken from raids of human homes, which was most likely what he was looking for. It was much sharper and more cutting efficient than her machete, but she decided against using it for just slicing vines. She was starting to get doubts about traveling so far from, what Ren considered, safety. She hadn't had any time to practice her sword skill since she ran away from camp, and who knows what kind of corrupted beasts she could run into. It was still relatively light out, so most of the more dangerous corrupts wouldn't be out yet. However, it seeming to be around noon, so she didn't have much time to stay at Ren's base, if she planned to make it back to camp. Still, every time she thought she heard a twig snap, leaves rustle, or the ground shake under her, she froze in fear. She didn't have the right instincts for this place, and if it wasn't for the team, she doubts she would have made it this far. A small part of her wished she could be back in her bedroom, waking up to find out this was all a bad dream. But, then that was ruined by the memory of her town being invaded, and completely destroyed by the monsters she was hiding from. She tried not to think about that night, mostly because it was all a blur. But, every once in a while, she ends up crying herself to sleep thinking about where her father must be now. Was he killed by the army, or worse, turned into one of them? Thoughts like that almost sent the tears flooding back. She finally managed to get back to the clearing Ren had found her in. She thought about heading back to camp as soon as she left Ren's cave, but she wasn't sure what to say to everyone when she returned. The image of Jin curled up on the ground of his tent in pain crawled back into her mind. She'd be too ashamed to look him in the eyes after leaving him like that. She took a deep breath, before she started walking in the direction of the camp. She felt claws dig deep into her shoulder, her scream of pain was muffled by another hand covering her mouth. "Just what do you think you're doing with this?" Ren asked calmly. He grabbed the sword from her hand. Leliana managed to struggle out of his grip, stumbling forward. She reached for her machete hilt out of pure instinct, before remembering that she left it in camp. "Your plan to use me as bait isn't working!" she said. "The others are probably more concerned with more important things... S-So there's no point in keeping me with you!" "Perhaps." he replied, without a flinch. "But, if all else fails, I could always make an example of you. Put a blade through your head and pin you to a tree? Surely, the halfling prince would be shaken to see his girlfriend killed by his mother's loyal assassin." "Y-You wouldn't kill me, if anything that would just give him more of an excuse to kill you in turn. Also, I'm not his girlfriend!" "My point being, him being bloodthirsty is exactly what we need. The prince must be as rage-fueled as possible when he challenges the queen. A broken mind, and twisted morals makes him an easier target for our true monarch. If I have to kill you and all of the little friends he makes between then and now, so be it." Despite her unease at his words, Leliana opened her mouth to say something, anything, she could to stall further. Then, a scream was heard in the distance, causing them both to look toward the direction it came from. It sounded familiar. Without thinking, Leliana dashed towards it, focusing only on following it, barely noticing that Ren was following close behind. ==================================== Ryn covered her nose and mouth, trying not to breathe in the black smoke that surrounded her. One minute she was next to Anubis and Jin, the next she was transported to a part of the forest that was foreign to her. The fog got thicker, threatening to fill her lungs if she so much as exposed a nostril to it. The trees and grass warped around her, before the fog started to obscure her vision. The fog converted into heavy smoke, and she saw where she's been transported to. A burning house with debris falling from the roof. She frantically looked around for an exit, and instead her eyes set on two dead bodies crushed under fallen support beams. Their faces were charred by the flames, as if they were already decaying. Despite the dry, hot air, her eyes were watering, and she passed it off as the smoke getting in her eyes. She still needed to find an exit. The living room of the house had a front and back door, the front door was on fire and the back was blocked by more debris. She ran upstairs to look for another option. Black, demonic creatures blocked her way, and she covered her mouth to prevent herself from screaming. Their attention was on something in the corner of the hallway, and the house was a few minutes away from completely collapsing. She had no time to think, she had to get pass them. She ran by them, trying to get to her room. There was a window there, and it wouldn't be too big of a jump. Just as she got to her door, she made the mistake of looking back at what the creatures had been paying attention to. It was her brother, Ren, slumped over on the floor. The beasts moved away, prepared to make their exit. She quickly moved through her room and opened the window, despite how much it burned her hands. She crawled out of it, refusing to think too much about how she'd land. She fell through it, the ground meeting her in a matter of seconds. She let out a loud scream. The impact wasn't as hard as she expected, it was more like she'd just fallen over onto the ground. The burning house was gone, and suddenly she was back in the forest. The black mist was gone, and the illusion was over. It had all felt so real, but in reality, she hadn't moved an inch. ==================================== "Ryn!" She stood up once she heard the familiar voice. Leliana rushed out from seemingly nowhere, to meet her with a hug. Ryn was still too dazed to hug back. "Lily? What are you doing here? Where were you?" Ryn asked. "It's a long story, but, all that's important is I'm here and ready to head back to camp as soon as possible!" Leliana replied. "Where are Jin and Anubis?" "I-I don't know. All I remember is that there were small pixie corrupts, and then a black fog, and then I was in a burning house, and now I'm here..." Ryn replied. Ryn seemed to look through Leliana, into the trees behind her. Leliana turned around to see what'd caught her attention. Ren had caught up to her. Leliana stood in front of Ryn in an attempt to shield her, but Ryn stepped around her, placing an arm on her shoulder to signal it was okay. For a minute, the assassin and the girl stared at each other, his was a of disdain and confusion, while hers was of deep concentration as if she'd seen him before all this. A strange familiarity. Leliana stayed to the side as the two looked themselves up and down, not being able to help but think they looked awfully simular. Then, an inhuman shriek snapped them all out of their thoughts. Ren looked up, noticing the signs of a corrupted pixie's magic. A huge tornado-like swirl of black fog extended towards the sky in the distance. The girls followed his gaze, Ryn's skin turning even paler. "That's the illusionary vortex the pixies put me inside." she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She turned to Leliana with a grim expression. "Someone else is in trouble, and judging by the voice, it sounds like another corrupt." "It must be Anubis, come on!" Leliana said, grabbing Ryn's hand and running towards where the black fog started. ==================================== "He went this way!" Anubis' heartbeat was pounding in his ears, yet he could still hear the flock of vulture-peacocks overhead. His enhanced senses allowed him to run through the dark mansion courtyard with ease. Unfortunately, it also made him very easy to spot, with practically no cover for him to hide himself in. If he could just get to the woodlands that surrounded the queen's castle, he'd be more in his element. The birds after him had attention spans as small as their beady eyes. If he could only find a way to distract them... He remembered this part of the yard well. This was where he hid the dead squirrel, the one that he would have thrown and effectively caused the scatterbrained flock to fight over. It was supposed to be the simple yet risky act that would end up being the key to his escape from them. But, there was no dead animal anywhere near, and the woods seemed to be getting further away the faster he went towards them. He dared to look back, and somehow the small flock had multiplied in number, turning the night sky itself black with their dark feathers. It wasn't just them chasing him anymore either. More of the queen's guards burst out of nowhere, all much larger and faster than him. This wasn't how he had planned his escape to go. It was all so sudden when it happened. The crowd of guards all leapt on him at once, threatening to rip him apart for daring to disobey their queen, for trying to run away from being a part of her reign. But suddenly they stopped. As the crowd dispersed from around him, he saw the queen tower over him. Her expression was a deep scowl, and she lifted her hand up, a purple glow surrounding it and her blank eyes. With just a few hand gestures, the queen created a portal in front of them. It was an almost mesmerizing swirl of multiple shades of purple. She looked down at him. "Anubis, are you aware of what we do to puny corrupts that try to rebel against their monarch?" she said, a disturbing face-splitting smile taking over her face. Anubis kept his face as stoic as possible. "Rebellious or misbehaving corrupts get sent to...the forest. But, frankly? I believe it'd be a worse punishment to have to be sent to your bedroom every night, my queen. I believe that would break any poor corrupt into obedience." Snorts and chuckles rose from some of the corrupts still watching the scene, but they instantly stopped with a glare from the queen. Without another word to Anubis, she turned towards the portal with twisted joy on her face. "CORRUPT FOREST." she demanded. The portal was now complete, showing a clear birds-eye view of the forest. The corrupts around her dug their claws, talons, and fangs into the ground, as the strong suction of the portal started to pull Anubis in. He gritted his teeth as he attempted to fight against it, but a purple aura appeared around him, pulling him into the portal while making it impossible to thrash or struggle against it. As he was thrown into the vortex, he heard the queen's last words before everything started to fade away. "Have fun in hell." her voice echoed. ==================================== "...Anubis...Anubis, can you hear us?" Leliana asked. Anubis jerked up, standing up and quickly taking a defensive stance. Leliana and Run both stepped back in surprise, and he gave a sigh of relief. "Are you okay?" Ryn asked. "Never been better." he replied, searching the area around him. "Where's Jin?" "We don't know. We figured you would." "Wherever he is, he have to find him fast, before... Gah!" Leliana yelled out as she felt something crawl up her back. It went from her back to sitting comfortably on her shoulder, wrapping itself in her curly, red hair. The pixie adjusted it's dress, before playfully kicking it's feet as it started talking. "You're a new one! Are you the girlfriend of the princeling?" it teased. "The princeling... You mean Jin? You know where Jin is?" Leliana said. She grabbed the pixie from her shoulder and held it on her flat palm. "Are you the one who did all this?" "Is that what he calls himself now? Well, you've got one thing in common, you both ask way too many questions!" it said. "But, no. While I play a big part in this, It's me and my siblings together who are causing all this! Teamwork conquers all, and all that! As for where the prince-ling is, well that's a more complex answer." "What do you mean?" "By now, one of my siblings is having a lot of fun with him! By the end, he'll either be the perfect halfling weapon against humanity...or broken beyond repair and be a shell of his former self. Either way it's a win-win, right?" it giggled. Leliana grew impatient, curling her palm into a fist and bringing the pixie close to her frustrated face. Her voice was harsh, and angry. "Take us to him, now." she growled. The pixie just gave a shrill chuckle. "Not sure if you want that, but... It'll at least be entertaining to watch! Let's go!" In a poof, the pixie turned into a small black mist, slipping through Leliana's fingers and reappearing in front of the three. "Follow me!" It said, before flying off. Ren watched as the three took off after the pixie, moving through the branches of the tangled trees as he followed close behind. The pixie could be right. Maybe this would be entertaining to watch. Chapter 7: A Magical Night Part 1
The Corrupted Queen walked through her palace’s dungeon, not taking a second look at her prisoners. There was a disturbing lack of humans pleading for mercy, but the time would come soon enough to take captives. For the moment, the dungeon was used to hold corrupts that had yet to be sent to the forest. Ungrateful beasts of her creation that refused to serve her like her loyal children above the dark, depressing underground prison.
As she walked on, they ranged from corrupts who were much too cowardly to fight for her, to those who wanted to rebel against her and dub Ragnarok as their monarch, which she simply snorted at in distaste. Then, there were those who were more animal-like than her more civil servants, they couldn’t speak any human languages, and relied on that animal instinct to live. Her shoes, hidden under her long dress, clacked against the smooth stone floor as she passed them. None of them were suitable of what she needed at the moment.
She needed the real monsters. Those who listened to no one, not even their fair queen. As she went deeper into the cold jail, the creatures got bolder. Those with paws and hands reached out to claw at her, while others without them slammed their bodies against the cell bars. At the very end of the hall, she finally came across the exact beasts she needed. She took the keys and prepared to unlock the door, before stopping.
“I told you never to follow me down here, Acantha. You never know what these rejects might do if you get too close to their cell.” The queen said.
“I-I know, my queen, but… I came to stop you.” Acantha replied.
The queen looked over her shoulder at the panther-snake hybrid. Her second in command sat up on her hind legs defiantly, her white, venomous fangs glowed against the dark lighting of the dungeon, bared at her ruler. The queen eyes narrowed as she turned around to face her minion. As if just remembering the queen’s tall stature, Acantha visibly flinched for a split second, before returning to her stance. The queen stared at her in silence, no emotion showed on her face. Then, the queen gave a snort, making her assistant wince, believing it to be one of disapproval. Instead, the snort evolved into a throaty chuckle, growing into a bone-chilling laugh that rang through the prison. Chains hanging from inside the cells rattled at the low, deep sound.
“Oh, thank you, dear. I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.” the queen finally said.
“But, my queen, these…things that you plan to unleash…once they’re out, there’s no convincing them to do your bidding. They’re unpredictable, uncooperative, and…”
“And that’s exactly what we need, my dear.”
Without another word, she unlocked the door.
Jin, Anubis, and Ryn made their way through the dense woodland of the forest, a long way from camp. They had checked all over the camp’s territory twice, so they decided to go deeper into the tree and vine infested area. They traveled in silence for most of their journey, searching high and low for Leliana. Eventually, they stopped to have a breakfast of dried fruit and berries by the side of a babbling river.
“When was the last time either of you saw her?” Jin asked, breaking the silence.
Anubis answered first. “She had gone to search for firewood for us. I was monitoring the camp from the branches of an oak tree. I…admit I eventually found it hard to keep my eyes open, but I saw her return.”
Ryn nodded. “I saw her enter her tent as I was heading back from fixing up the training area. When was the last time you saw her, Jin?”
Jin hesitated, using the excuse of eating a piece of fruit to choose his words. “I woke up in the middle of the night, and went outside to get air. She ran past me, and I assumed she was just going to stargaze or something. I guess I gave her too much credit when it comes to not getting lost.” he said, with a chuckle and a shrug.
“How can you be so casual about this? You know better than we do about how dangerous this place is, and you let one of our allies go out without asking her where she was going?”
“Whatever she got herself into, she deserves it for running off on her own.”
“Then, why are we bothering to save her, if you care so little?” Anubis asked.
“My conscience, of course. I’m not as heartless as I look, after all.”
“No, but you’re just as brainless!” a high-pitched, and cheery voice called out.
The three all stood, looking around for where the voice came from. It wasn’t anywhere near them, so they started following the sound of childish laughter. It got to the point where the trees overhead started tangling together, blocking out the sunlight. It was hard to navigate in the darkness, and the tree trucks seemed to be closing in on them. Just then, an unnatural blue glow started luring them in it’s direction. The next movements were almost hypnotic, as the blue glow led them to…a colorful garden.
Something called out from the garden. “Look guys, new entertainment!”
Jin lets out a groan, as he rubs his temples in annoyance. Anubis growled softly, trying not to show the irritation on his face. Ryn looks between the two of them, confused.
“W-Who is that? What’s going on?” she asked.
Jin sighed. “It’s a…Corrupted Pixie.”
“A what…?”
A whisk of wind passed by them, making them turn their heads to face a large, glowing, blue mushroom. Three small, human-like, corrupted creatures laid on it, their blank, white eyes somehow filled with innocent emotion, and their spiky white hair all over the place. They were roughly only four inches in height, with butterfly-like, white wings, and lion tails teasingly waving at them. Jin stepped up to their mushroom, arms crossed as he confronted them, their wide smiles were stuck on their faces. The leader of the three stood, brushing back his short hair. His clothing appeared to be made of grass blades. It was honestly hard to tell pixie genders, but it appeared boyish.
“Prince-ling!” It said in a joyful voice. “We’ve been expecting you!”
“What are you doing here? I thought the queen kept you locked up.” Jin asked.
Another one stood, this one with longer, curly hair, and a robe made of flower petals.
“Your mommy’s been looking for you, so we thought we’d help you find your way back home!”
A third, this one slightly taller and thinner than the others, stood. It’s hair was tied into a bun, and it’s clothing was a dress made of twigs.
“You wouldn’t wanna disappoint mommy dearest, would you? You would be much more use to us all as the Corrupted Prince than a smear of blood on the forest floor.”
The three all shared an obnoxious, shrill giggle. By the way Jin held up a claw to the leader’s throat, he wasn’t amused.
“Mo- The queen wants me back all of a sudden? I thought I was already dead to her. Why would she go through all this just for my return?”
“It’d be much more of a nuisance to go searching for a new heir, when she’s got a perfectly broken one right here!”
Before Jin could ask what they meant, the three had vanished in a cloud of black smoke. He growled in frustration, then started to cough as the smoke filled his lungs.
Jin waved away the last of the smoke, seeing that he still stood in the middle of the garden. His mind cleared, allowing him to slowly remember his initial goal.
“Well, that was a nice waste of time. Come on guys, the sooner we leave, the least likely the human’ll be dead before we find…her.” he said, looking around in confusion.
Anubis and Ryn weren’t behind him. Jin looked around frantically, moving forward past the garden and back into the forest. It was so dark in the area, he could barely see what was right in front of him. He breathed a sigh of relief when he reached a clearing, but something still felt very wrong. Namely, it was night. The sky was a dark blue, with the moon shining brightly, and countless stars. It wasn’t easy to tell time here, but it definitely wasn’t late enough for this.
“You didn’t think you were getting away that easily, did you?”
An all too familiar voice rang through the air, before a small cloud of black fog appeared over his shoulder. The boyish looking pixie corrupt materialized on Jin’s shoulder. He promptly flicked the small creature off of him, making it land face first onto the ground.
“Sorry, I thought that thick skull of yours would break your fall.” Jin said, looking over his shoulder with a smirk.
The small, dark corrupt had an expression of faint irritation. Jin nearly laughed out loud at the blades of grass and dirt caught in it’s teeth and hair. It fixed itself with a snap of it’s clawed fingers, and had it’s usual, proud expression back.
“So you do have a sense of humor, eh prince-ling?” It chuckled. “Then, we’re gonna have a lot of fun together.”
It snapped it’s fingers, and a thick fog surrounded the area. The pixie stared into it, without glancing back at Jin. It’s voice was suddenly calm, almost monotonous, and much more eerie, as it chanted something. All the fog in the area swirled upwards, closing in on Jin, who unraveled his wings.
“Oh, I wouldn’t try to fly out with wings as tiny as yours. You wouldn’t get an inch off the ground!” It said, giving another high-pitched giggle.
Jin looked back at his wings in confusion. They were nearly as small as a bat’s now. He gritted his teeth, trying not to let the reality warping beast know it was getting under his skin so soon. Knowing what he did about Corrupted Pixies, he was in for a long night of mindfuckery.
“What do you want from me?” Jin muttered.
“You already know, my dear prince-ling.”
It summoned a mirror from the fog, and held it up to Jin’s face. It showed him with a dark and twisted smirk, wearing a royal robe that was black and white, and a silver crown on his head that shone with black, glowing crystals. Slowly, the mirror started to alter itself, showing he was sitting on a throne now, his previously clean robes now splattered in blood that clearly wasn’t his own.
The image started to pan out, showing he wasn’t just sitting on any throne, he was sitting on the queen’s. Unfortunately, it wasn’t her blood on him either, the blood was red, not black like a Corrupt’s, and he sincerely hoped it was just regular animal blood. This hope was shattered when the image was changed again, cutting to several different things.
Dungeons full of humans dead and alive, small towns to big cities all destroyed, the only creatures roaming freely being members of the corrupted. The sky was red, must like the war stained earth below. The final scene seemed to be in fast forward, showing the Corrupted Castle being expanded into an entire kingdom, spilling out into what used to be human land.
The mirror then went back to serving it’s actual purpose, showing a normal reflection of Jin. His eyes were wide, his mouth slightly open, as if he was trying to find words to speak the thoughts running through his mind. A whole range of emotions were rising in him. Disbelief at the possibility of him becoming a tyrant. Denial, as he tried to convince himself this was just an improbable illusion made by the pixie. Yet, fear upon realizing how likely the outcome could be, if he submitted to his mother.
That was another thing. His mother wasn’t in the visions at all. Does that mean it took place after he defeated her? Did he have it in him to do all of that on his own? He tried to deny it, but something deep inside of him felt…pleased at the thought of him ruling over not just one species, but two. A corrupted army, and human prisoners at his command. His migraines were starting to come back. Everything got blurry as he clutched at his forehead.
“What is it that humans say? ‘Be yourself’, 'Embrace who you are’, sappy bullshit like that?” the cheerful voice chimed.
The pixie made the mirror disappear back into the fog. It flew circles around Jin’s head, not helping his sudden dizziness. Luckily for him, the pixie stopped in front of his face. He tried desperately to swipe at the thing, get it out of his sight. He couldn’t think straight anymore. The pixie shook it’s head, looking at Jin like he was a scared, lost puppy, trying to defend himself.
“Why don’t you take their advice in this case? Be who you really are! A monster.” The pixie’s voice turned eerie again, as it cooed out the last word like it was speaking to a child. “A beast, a freak of nature. You desperately try to run away from your fate, try to be merciful to humans. Try to be human. But, you wouldn’t have survived this long if it wasn’t for your enhancements. You should feel lucky the queen took you in, instead of killing you along with your family.”
Jin looked at the pixie in surprise and confusion, his migraine finally fading to a mere headache. “…What?”
“Oh, shoot, I don’t think I was supposed to tell you that!” It said, with a nonchalant shrug. “Oh well, I’ve said enough.”
“Wait, no! What do you mea-”
“Say now, I couldn’t help but notice that you mentioned you were looking for a human. A girl, I believe? I’m very good at eavesdropping, you know. Plus, with your loud mouth…”
“What about her?” Jin replied, getting tired of the corrupt’s rambling.
“I believe I may or may not have seen her on my way to say hi to you and your friends. There aren’t many human girls just prancing around the forest, after all. I was feeling a bit pecking, so she’s lucky she had that weird corrupted assassin with her. I assumed he’d finish her off.”
“Corrupted assassin…? The one that looks like a human? He’s with her? Where are they?”
“Well aren’t you just the detective today! Why so curious? She is just a human after all, isn’t she? Or has our little prince-ling found his mate?”
“Answer the question before I tear your little wings off.” Jin snarled.
The pixie just giggled joyfully again. “No, I don’t think I will. It’s just about my break time, so if I could put you down for another appointment, that’d be great. In the meantime, why don’t you worry about your other friends? The rogue jackel corrupt, and the other human girl? I think my siblings are having a lot of fun with them!”
“I don’t even know where I am anymore, how the hell do you expect me t-”
The pixie was gone, so was the fog obscuring Jin’s sight. The illusion of night faded away, revealing it really was still bright out. Jin cursed under his breath, and went back the way he came.

Chapter 6: Night Terrors
Useless... Pathetic... Weak... Waste of life... The voices echoed in the halfing's head mercilessly. He was staring into a black void, yet he seemed to be standing without anything below him. He couldn't see who was taunting him, and it made him all the more frustrated. Dim light started to fill the area, showing that he stood in his old room. Stone walls and a cold metal floor, along with a bed with a thin mattress and an even thinner blanket. Not much else decorated his room, except for a big window with beautiful, gothic designs framing it, black roses, crows and ravens, and decorative skulls. Home sweet home. He looked down at himself again, already knowing what he'd see. His child body was his own again, he reached his small hands up to touch his smooth face. What was happening? He'd had nightmares before, but usually in his adult form. His confusion quickly turned to childish fear, as his room's steel door opened. His mother stepped into the room, her tall frame and large wingspan filled the small space. She used her magic to shrink slightly, enough to fit into the room easier, but still tower over the boy. He cowered at the sight of her, her glowing, white eyes blinding him. She didn't say a word as her clawed hands reached around his waist. Was she...hugging him? He thought hugs were supposed to feel warm and comforting, but hers felt like the opposite. She picked him up in her arms, and walked over to the lone window in his room. Her blank expression twisted into pure hatred as she raised the window, exposing him to the cold air. He didn't have the power to fight back. He had no choice but to stare back at the souless eyes of the creature he called 'mother'. Words flowed out his mouth like it was someone else saying it. "Mother? It hurts when you hold me like this." Her claws were starting to dig into his back painfully. He couldn't scream, no matter how much the pain intensified. The boy was too paralyzed in fear. He faintly heard his mother chuckle. "You're a hopeless disappointment, and you know what we do with a waste of corrupted DNA like yourself." she hissed. It wasn't a question, but he nodded anyway, tears flooding his eyes. She stretched her arms, until he was outside, only her hands keeping him from dropping down into the ground below. The ground far below them shook with an amazing force, enough to threaten to bring the whole castle down. "There he is now." the queen said, her face-splitting grin appeared again. "Goodbye, Princeling. I suppose I'll have to find a human child to replace you. Second time's the charm and all that." She let go of him, just in time for the beast with countless rows of teeth to emerge from the ground and devour him. Jin tossed and turned in his bed, screaming, the night terror felt much too real. The pain of Ragnarok's teeth tearing into him went on as if it wasn't just a dream. He rolled off of his mattress, his head pounding. His hands instinctively reached up to clinch his aching temples, but they only added to the pain. He could feel his teeth growing larger and sharper, practically splitting the skin over his jaws. His cries of pain got louder still. Leliana stirred in her sleep. She heard a faint yell, and warily got out of bed. Throwing on her blanket over her night clothes, she stepped out into the cool night air. She followed the sounds to Jin's tent. They showed signs of fading out. She thought it might've just been a nightmare, and she opened the tent to make sure he was okay. She covered her mouth in shock, stopping herself before she let out a scream of her own. Jin was writhing in pain, trembling as his black claws drew his blood from his head. His eyes were tightly closed, but a white glow seemed to shine under their lids. She tried to get closer, kneeling beside him. She reached out a hand, gently moving his sweaty hair out of his face. "Jin? A-Are you...?" Leliana started. Jin raised his head, his every tooth sharp as he lunged at her. She wasn't fast enough to react or even yell out before she was pinned to the floor. His blank eyes glared down at her, a snarl on his lips. Something about her scared, panicked expression must have gotten to him, because he faltered after nearly a minute of holding her down. He tore himself away from her, crawling back to his bed and grabbing his head as the aching started again. "G-Get away from me! It hurts..." Jin cried out. His voice had a strange echo effect over it, lower and deeper than his own. He placed his hands over his face, his body trembling in a mix of pain, shame, and effort to try to fight his transformation. Leliana got up, and looked between the tent's opening and Jin before lowering her head and quickly rushing out into the cold wind. She held her blanket tightly around her, slightly shivering as she kept running. Before she knew it, Her feet led her past her tent, and out of camp. She couldn't tell where she was going. It was hard to keep track of things like landmarks or paths when her eyes were screwed shut. All she knew was the land beneath her changed from a stone path to a grassy area that felt like a clearing, giving her even less cover from the air. She draped the blanket over her head and body like a hood. Her legs started to give out, her exhaustion finally catching up to her. She dropped to her knees, her eyes tired and her sight blurry as she tried to fight the urge to nod off. "Who's there?" a voice calls out. Leliana looked around her, standing up and getting into a defensive position. She hadn't brought her machete with her, and sincerely doubted she was trained enough to take on a corrupt with her bare hands. Her eyes meet the one who spoke out, who was sitting up in the branches of a tall tree. It was the human-like corrupt that attacked the group yesterday. "W-What are you doing here?" She stuttered. "I believe I should be asking you that." Ren jumped down from the tree, landing a few feet in front of her. "Shouldn't you be with your companions back at your precious base?" "They're all asleep." Leliana lied. "I came out here to think." "If 'thinking' means running out into the middle of the forest, wearing a blanket over your head, and weeping like a child, you humans are stranger then I thought." He came closer to her, observing her face. She quickly wiped the tears from her eyes. She hadn't even noticed them. She briefly wondered if they were there from when Jin attacked her or from once she realized she was lost. Ren gestured for her to follow him, before he started walking back into the tree-filled forest. "Wait, why should I trust you? I'm not following you just to be taken to the queen again!" Leliana said, defiantly crossing her arms. Ren rolled his eyes, grabbing the girl's arm and tugging her along with him. It wasn't a long journey, but the constant hassle of low hanging branches reminded Leliana to cut her hair. They approached a moss-covered cave with vines hung over the entrance that did a surprisingly good job at keeping it hidden. There were even thorny plants laid across the ground around it to discourage visitors. Ren lifted Leliana over the plants, and she moved through the thick layer of vines. Inside the cave was bigger than her tent, and without the wind reaching it, it was much warmer then the outside. The queen must have been sending him supplies, because his food consisted of fruits and vegetables that were definitely not native to the forest, unidentifiable meat that she'd rather not find out what was, a sleeping bag, and canteens that felt filled to the brim with water. "I wasn't sent here for you, thus it wouldn't benefit me to take you to the queen. Though, what would benefit me, is keeping you hostage until the halfling came looking for you. Make yourself comfortable, as at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if your companions sent me a thank you note for taking you off their hands." Leliana huffed in annoyance, but chose against saying anything about it. Jin woke up, groggy from lack of sleep. The pain that rang through his body must have made him pass out. He changed into his clothes, exiting his tent into the harsh sunlight. He groaned as his tired eyes adjusted to the brightness. He saw that Anubis and Ryn seemed to be searching for something, each split up and searching through opposite sides of the camp and the forest surrounding it. Ryn, seeing that he was awake, ran over to him with more panic then she usually expressed. "Jin, have you seen Lily today?" "No..." Jin instantly thought the next before. The implication that he made her leave didn't help his mood. "She probably just went to get water or something." "We've checked, she's nowhere near the camp, the dam, or anywhere she usually is. She's never traveled any further on her own! What if she's...?" "Well then, it's up to us to bring her corpse back, right?" The dark humor didn't come with the joking tone Jin usually added to it. Which may of made Ryn even more uneasy about it. Jin went back into his tent, grabbing the map and rolling it up. He then dashed for Leliana's tent, taking her machete and the sheath it was held in. Strapping it to his pants, he held the map tightly in hand. He looked over at Ryn with all the confidence he could muster. "Tell Anubis we're going on an adventure." he said, with a smirk. Chapter 5: The Corrupted Hunter
Ren’s eyes slowly opened for the first time since he landed in the forest. Traveling by portal always seemed to knock him out, whether it was by the intense strain on his body or his head hitting the rough ground. He stood up, and looked around. In front of him was an arch of tangled tree branches, looming over a grassy path. The forest entrance, a deceivingly beautiful sight. The sky above him showed it was morning, the sun still rising in the distance. He calmly stood, and started to walk down the path into the woods.
The mocking chirps of bird-like corrupts filled the air. One particularly noisy singer got beheaded when it made the mistake of straying too close to Anubis’ tent. The damned creatures were getting cockier every day. Just like when Ryn checked the food storage to see that almost half of their rations gone or half-eaten. Ryn volunteered to go looking for edible plants, or any other food she could find. Jin was pacing around his tent, restlessly. His eyes were red and puffy from sleep-deprivation, as he looked over a map he had found. His mind was filled with questions, the most prominent one being ‘How did mere humans manage to make a map of the forest?’.
It wasn’t the whole forest, naturally, it would’ve taken more than a human’s full lifespan to explore the forest. Regardless, the map contained some of the area surrounding the camp, it could be very useful. The sheet the map was written on was wide, implying the campers actually attempted to waste their lives exploring the entire place. It was so detailed, if they could find out where the map stops, and where to expand on it…
“Jin?”
Jin turned and saw Leliana standing in the tent entrance. He looked back down at the map after he glanced at her, only acknowledging her with a brief nod and grunt. She stepped inside, ignoring his rude greeting. She leaned over the map, looking at him with a concerned face.
“Have you not had any sleep?” Leliana asked.
“No, what’s your point?” Jin replied.
“My point is that’s not good for anyone!”
“The corrupted species don’t need to sleep as often as humans, neither do I. We can go up to a week without sleep.” he said. A poorly-timed yawn slipped out before he could stop it.
“…Maybe you’re more human than you think then.”
“Why don’t you ever bother Anubis? He looks fun to annoy the hell out of!” he said, giving a sarcastic smile.
“Because Anubis didn’t promise to teach me how to fight.” she replied. “Come on! In all seriousness, I could use all the help I could get, Jin. Please?”
She made her eyes hopeful and innocent, in an attempt at a puppy face. Jin rolled his eyes, and walked out of the tent, Leliana excitedly following behind him. She grabbed her machete from her tent, before following him to the training area. The area itself was more or less just a clearing with targets painted on trees, and a few poorly made dummies scattered around. He led her to one of them, allowing her to show him her idea of a slash. She eagerly took the hilt in her As she brought the machete back, he stopped her, grabbing the hilt.
“You’re holding it wrong, It’s two-handed.” Jin sighed.
She adjusts it, and then tries again, bringing the machete down on the dummy. Instead of a clean slash through the dummy, the blade gets stuck in it, leading her to try to tug it out hopelessly. Jin shook his head, covering his face with a hand. He stepped over, helping her pull it out, while she stumbled back. She looked down in embarrassment as he rolled his eyes, he headed over to the weapons bin.
“Maybe a blade like that isn’t for you. Humans are good with guns, right?” Jin asked, while fishing through the bin.
“Humans that are trained to use them, yes. I’ve never used one before in my life!” Leliana replied. “Besides I can do this! I’ve cut down plenty of plants with this thing, what’s slicing up a few corrupts?”
She flourished her weapon with a series of over-the-top slashes going through the air. It slips from her grip, and goes flying through the air. She frantically runs out of the way before it came back down to fall harmlessly on it’s side. Jin takes a deep breath, nearly cracking a smile. He picked it up, and handed it back to her.
“How about you practice against a moving target?” Jin asked.
“What do you m-” Leliana paused, the realization sinking in. “You want me to go against you? But, that’s completely dangerous!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” he replied calmly.
“It’s not you I’m worried about…” she muttered under her breath.
He just laughed in response, and put himself in a defensive pose. She fumbled with the hilt, before preparing a slash at him. He easily avoided it, ducking down and swiping her feet from under her. She fell to the ground, dropping her weapon, and he prepared himself for another attempt. She stood up again, angrily grabbing her machete, and charging towards him. He side-stepped her, leading her to stumble into a tree. Jin grabbed her by her shoulder, using his other hand to disarm her.
“Having fun, guys?” a female voice said behind them.
They looked back to see Ryn and Anubis had come back from collecting berries and plants. They suddenly realized how they looked. Jin’s hands were pinning her to the tree, and their faces were inches away from each other. They quickly stepped away from each other, Leliana blushing in embarrassment and brushing herself off. Jin just tried to look unaffected. Anubis did what would’ve been an eye-roll if he had pupils, and went off to find the food storage. Ryn stuck around with an almost amused smile.
“Shouldn’t you be helping Anubis?” Jin asked.
He casually unsheathed and sheathed his claws, making Ryn step back, a bit frightened. She stuttered out a ‘bye’, and left the two to share a laugh. Jin gave Lily back her sword, and he continued to train with her. This time actually helping her along, rather than showing off.
Ren stepped through the wilderness of the forest, though it seemed to be easier to walk through than usual. There seemed to be hints of someone trying to slice through the undergrowth and vines that usually made it difficult to navigate through the acres. Soon, he passed by a small, babbling stream. He crouched down on the grass beside it, and found footsteps in it. Nothing the untrained eye would catch, as they seemed to be made a couple of days ago. He pressed on, following them past the stream, and towards the tall, oak trees that stood before him.
Moving through them with swift ease, he came across a cliff. Down said slope, was a campsite that seemed to be populated by only four people. The inhabitants of the camp seemed to not notice them as they chewed through respective handfuls of colorful berries. He used his giant, leathery wings to lift himself into the air, and land safely on the ground. Two of the four, two female humans, were visibly surprised as they reached for weapons. The other two didn’t, as they were a fellow corrupt and…the halfling prince he had been sent for. While one of the human females showed fear, the other showed a look of recognition. She seemed to look right through his blue eyes.
“What are you supposed to be?” The prince asked, brandishing his claws.
Ren’s face showed amused surprise. “You don’t remember me? Strange, considering I’m a loyal soldier of your mother.”
He couldn’t have expected the laughter that came out of the halfling’s mouth. “I thought mother would die before having a human minion!”
Ren tried hard to not show the obvious annoyance on his face. “I’m not a human.”
“Oh, really?” the boy walked over to Ren, dropping his defensive stance. “You don’t look like any corrupt I’ve seen.”
“I’m not here to argue about whether I’m a corrupt or no-”
“You don’t look much like a man either though. When was the last time you cut your hair, never?”
“Enough!” Ren growled, expanding his wings to their full span.
He soon saw the purpose of the prince’s teasing when he noticed one of the girls were gone, the red-headed one. He swiftly span around, knocking the girl to the ground with a swish of one of his wings. She held a machete and obviously meant to attack him while the halfling distracted him. He didn’t have time for these games. As the other girl went to check on the red-headed one, the corrupt charged towards him. He sidestepped the attack, and rushed towards the prince. He was the one he was here for.
Jin dodged the charge and took the chance to unfurl his own wings. The pain that usually came from doing it so quickly was barely noticed, and he took to the sky. He didn’t know what the corrupt was capable of, especially being so much more humane than the ones he’s used to fighting. He couldn’t risk wreaking the base for just one fight.
“You’re gonna have to try harder than that if you want me to notice you!” Jin teased, as he flapped his wings to stay airborne.
The hunter flew up to meet him, grabbing Jin by the leg, and digging his claws into him. After a shout of pain, Jin stopped flying just long enough for Ren to fly over him, and kick him back down to the ground. He hit the ground of the camp roughly, uprooting the grass and dirt under him. As he tried to stand, the other corrupt came down from the sky, landing feet first on his chest. Jin would’ve yelled in pain again, if the breath hadn’t been knocked out of him. Instead, he laid there, his mouth gaping soundlessly. He expected more blows, but they never came.
He leaned up, his chest still hunting, and noticed that the hunter was being held back. It was Anubis. While the hunter fought to get out of his grip, Jin found the energy to stand. Anubis let Ren go, and in the same moment Jin drop-kicked the hunter, sending him flying against a tree. Jin ran, and raising his own claws to lay blows on him, the hunter took off towards him as well. As they charged at each other, they stopped before actually making contact, something distracting them. They felt rumbling under the ground. It felt like it was rumbling the very ground underneath them.
They both scrambled to get far away from the area, both going separate ways. The ground under them started to uproot as something bashed against it. Jin quickly shouted for the others to get inside, them each going into the meeting tent. Ren took shelter a good distance away in a tall tree whose leaves hid his form. Just as the rumbling stopped and they thought it to be safe, Ragnarok burst through the ground, launching his limbless body at least sixty feet into the air. He let out a mighty roar, as he fell back to the ground mouth first, and dug back underground. He seemed to not sense any of them, as he went on his way, digging away from the campsite.
Jin took a sigh of relief. “Coast is clear.” he announced.
“He seems to be becoming more active around this area lately. Do you think the queen expects this is where we stay?” Anubis asked, looking over the damage done to the ground Ragnarok entered and exited through.
“If she does, that just means we’ll have to move soon.”
The four of them walked outside together. As expected the land near the camp was a mess, but worse of all, the camp was wrecked. Any berries that may have fallen over or been crushed from the food storage could easily be replaced, the whole food storage itself was another thing. Jin looked around, but the human-like corrupt that attacked him must have ran away when Ragnarok appeared. That wasn’t what was important now anyway. What was important was making sure everyone was well fed and ready to rebuild. Half their food being taken, being attacked by some kind of corrupted head-hunter, and having Ragnarok mess up the camp’s previously beautiful scenery. Something told them this was gonna be a long day.

Leliana's machete, an Ontario Machete!
Chapter 4: Ragnarok the King
Leliana’s eyes opened slowly as they rested on the ceiling of the cave. All the tossing and turning that she did in her sleep caused the towel she was laying on to be wrapped around her. She untangled herself, and sat up, stretching and yawning. The campfire was out, and the bright blue sky was bringing light in from outside. She noticed that Jin and Anubis were busy carrying logs as big as tree trunks past the campsite. She stood up, stepping out of the cave to join them. Jin gave a short grunt and nod as a greeting, while Anubis didn’t even seem to notice her.
“Where are you two going?” she asked, walking beside them. Though she wasn’t strong enough to make much of a difference carrying the log, she grabbed her machete and slashed any tangled flora in their way.
“We found a river with water…clean enough to drink, but…it’s running low.” Jin panted. “We’re gonna build a dam so we’ll have a constant water supply. We’ve been working on it since this morning.”
“This morning? What time is it?”
“Past noon.” Anubis replied. “Don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything.”
“Just the view.” Jin added.
Before Leliana could ask what he meant, she saw it herself as they reached the river. It was so clear she could see the bottom of it. While it may have been low before, now it was high, the water lapping against the dam the two had built. It was empty of life, it had to be one of the few bodies of water that was in the whole forest. She knelled beside it, as Anubis passed her a canteen to fill. It was odd how a place that looked so peaceful was so dangerous. Once they had filled the last canteen, they started to head back to their temporary home.
The three traveled quietly for a while, nothing but the sound of the grass crunching under their feet, and the occasional breeze brushing through the tree branches. The silence soon proved maddening to Leliana, and she cleared her throat, though the other two didn’t so much as look back at her. She did it louder, causing Jin to look back with an annoyed groan.
“I was just wondering…won’t we have to find a new home soon? I mean, I love sleeping in dark, stuffy caves as much as a girl could, but I-” she started.
“We’ve already thought of it. We found a campsite ‘abandoned’ by humans not far from the river.” Jin said. “We’ve moved most of our equipment there, as well as made theirs, ours.”
“Abandoned?” she replied. Her confused expression faded into horror, as she quickly realized what he was implying. “Oh.”
“It’s to our advantage. They had much more useful things.” Anubis said.
“Yeah, like mattresses to sleep on instead of towels, and individual tents so annoying humans can’t ask me questions in the middle of the night!” Jin added, cheerfully.
Leliana glared at him, but didn’t say anything as she followed them towards an unfamiliar part of the forest. They came across slippery rocks by a quiet stream, and carefully climbed down them. As they walked beside the stream, Leliana basked in the relaxing sound of the water flowing past them, closing her eyes. Soon, they pasted the stream and approached a wide, flat field where there weren’t only tents, but an area that seemed to have once been a training ground. Maybe the people who lived here before had planned to take on the beasts the forest provided. Clearly a bad idea on their part.
Jin showed her the tent she’s be staying in, along with her supply rations and her bed. He also gave her a basic tour of where to find what in the camp, so she wouldn’t ‘bother him about it later’. He allowed her to get acquainted with her room, and started to leave her to herself.
“Jin?” Leliana said, stopping him.
“Yeah?” Jin sighed, turning around.
“I was wondering… How did someone like you end up living as the queen’s heir?”
He froze a bit at this. With a sigh, he sat down on her mattress, gesturing for her to sit next to him. Once she did, he began.
“…I don’t remember ever not living there, so I can’t help you when it comes to life before it. For as much as I know, I don’t have a father, and my mother is a cruel bi- er witch. That’s all there is to it.” Jin said, with a shrug. He got up, and left without another word, leaving Leliana to glare at him, annoyed.
“You’re really melodramatic, you know that?” she called out.
The blue sky had turned to shades of pink, orange, and red, signaling it was evening already. The forest would be too dark to navigate through soon, so Leliana grabbed a flashlight from their supplies, and tried to make her way out of camp as quickly and silently as possible.
She kept her machete in it’s sheath, as there wasn’t many plants in her way. The route out of camp was so soothing to take, a path made of pebbles and grass made for a pleasing crunch under her feet. The afternoon was dead quiet. She took a deep breath, and for a second it felt as if she was the only inhabitant of the entire area. Until she heard footsteps behind her, and a voice call out to her.
“What are you doing out?”
Leliana turned around in surprise, and sighed in relief when she saw it was just Anubis. “I needed some air.”
“The forest is dangerous around this time. You need to go back.” he said, pointing back towards the site.
“Dangerous how? Both you and Jin have warned me about the ‘dangers’ of this place, but I’ve only been attacked once since I’ve been here! Plus, I think I can handle myself if a stray corrupt does manage to attack me.” she declared, patting the sheath that held her weapon. “Give me one reason to go running back to the camp with my tail between my legs, and I’ll follow you back!”
Just then, a deep rumble was heard, as the ground beneath them seemed to tremble. The branches on the trees shook, and the sound only got louder. Leliana started to miss the silence that once filled the air.
“That’s one. Now, hurry!” Anubis barked.
The girl didn’t need to be told twice as her feet pumped against the stone path, trying to keep up with the corrupt in front of her. It wasn’t easy, as he dashed ahead, knowing the land much better than she did. She called out to him, but he didn’t slow down. She blamed the quake under them, or at least she hoped it was simply an earthquake. It seemed to be following them, and the trees in the distance behind them didn’t seem to shiver anymore, as the shaking trailed after them. Despite Anubis’s commands, they weren’t heading towards the camp, they were heading away from it.
“Wait, what about Jin?” Leliana asked, hoping Anubis could still hear her.
“He knows about it, and we’re going to meet him now. He says we shouldn’t let it follow us to the campsite.” he replied.
'Shouldn’t let it follow us? As in, it’s a living thing?’ she thought.
Their feet pounded faster as the underground movement started to head past them. Anubis quickly grabbed Leliana’s arm and tugged her to the side right as the dirt uprooted. The trail of the beast was easier to follow now, as the ground was raised as it tried to move towards the surface. Then, it stopped. The beast seemed to be heading deeper into the ground. Leliana breathed a sigh of relief, but Anubis looked more tense than usual. They headed towards the river dam they’d built that morning, Jin was pacing anxiously before he saw them.
“What took you two so long? I was worried he had gotten you!” he yelled, crossing his arms.
“Who is he? Why was there a living earthquake following us?” Leliana asked.
Jin snorted. “Not a 'living earthquake’. Ragnarok. He’s the warden of this prison, and probably the one who killed the humans who lived in the camp. Noticed that no other corrupts are anywhere in sight? They’ve all run in terror from him.”
“What is Ragnarok?”
Just as Leliana asked, the ground starts rumbling again. Louder than before, as if it was getting closer and closer. As if it was right under them. Jin grabbed her hand and Anubis ran ahead, them following close behind. Suddenly, the earth behind them broke away as a creature shot up into the air. Leliana let out a scream, making the mistake of looking back just as the creature started to descend back to earth. It’s mouth had endless rows of teeth, and unlike most corrupts it didn’t have eyes. Jin lifted her into his arms, still running as he tried to keep up with Anubis despite the added weight.
Out of the corner of her eye, Leliana saw someone who looked like…a human girl, frantically gesturing for them to follow her. Seeing as they had no other choice, Anubis and Jin followed behind the girl, as she lead them to a cave. As Jin let Leliana down, everyone caught their breath. For the first time, the trio actually got a good look at the girl. She had short, black hair in a bob, and pale skin. Her blue eyes seemed to be examining the others, their gaze staying on Jin for a bit longer as her face turned pink. Her clothes consisted of a brown tunic, black leggings, and worn-out boots. They waited until the rumbling stopped to start talking.
“Who are you?” Jin asked.
“My name is Ryn.” the girl replied.
“How did you get here? Do you know where you are?”
“…No.”
Jin waited for more of an answer, but as it never came, he decided to leave it alone. The silence outside was starting to drive him crazy. Where had Ragnarok gone? He could be right under them for all they knew. As if Ragnarok could hear his thoughts, the ground right under their feet started to shake. Jin yelled for Anubis to grab Ryn and follow him as he took flight, lifting Leliana along with him. Anubis ran swiftly away from the cave, Ryn in tow. Behind them, Ragnarok burst up from the earth, devouring the cave in one move, then going back underground. Tears started building in Ryn’s eyes, though her face remained emotionless.
“What is wrong?” Anubis panted.
“That cave was my home.” Ryn said simply.
The four met back at the camp, where they helped Ryn move into an available tent. It was night now, and Ragnarok had finally retired to his home, wherever that was. A light rain had started falling, which would undoubtedly turn into a heavy downpour through the night. Thankfully, the campgrounds had more stone under it then dirt, so not much mud would be around the camp by morning. As they each retired to their individual rooms, Jin just laid in his bed, hands behind his head, listening to the relaxing sound of the rain drops hitting the top of his tent. Until Leliana stepped inside, having worn a poncho from one of the dead travelers wardrobes to keep herself dry.
“What’d you want now?” Jin asked.
“I couldn’t sleep, so I started thinking, and asking myself questions. Such as, 'how long will I have to live this way? Moving from area to area, running from every beast because I’m too much of a coward to fight.’ That’s no way to live, Jin.” Leliana said.
“Why don’t you whine about it more by yourself? Maybe if you wish hard enough, a corrupt’ll find you and end your suffering in your sleep. No shit, it’s no way to live, so it’s our job to find our way out.”
“That’s not necessarily what I meant. I meant, it’s no way to live, being a coward and running from everything. I want to learn how to accept this like you have. I want to learn to fight, to survive.”
Jin sat up from his bed, looking at her with more than annoyed irritation for once. “You want to learn to fight?” He looked away for a second, lost deep in thought. Then, he stood up, giving her a nod and a smirk. “…Fine, I’ll train you myself tomorrow morning.”
Leliana squealed in delight, running forward to hug Jin. He cringed at the noise, but returned the hug reluctantly.
“Alright, alright. Now, get to bed!” he chuckled.
“You’ve shown endless promise, my minion, and I believe you’re ready for your first major challenge.”
The queen grinned down at her most trusted assassin from her throne. He bowed before her, his shoulder-length black hair falling over his pale face. He was a rare oddity among corrupts because of these human-like traits, but none of them would dare to point it out. Not after what they’ve seen him do. He lifted up upon the queen’s command, as she opened a portal, using her two step spell.
“I will send you to Corrupt Forest, in order to go after my former heir, and anything else that stands in your way. Do you understand?” The queen asked. Her grin widened once he nodded. “You may not return until you bring back his body, dead or alive. Though, I’d prefer dead.”
He readied himself to be sucked through the portal, with only a few last words to his superior.
“As you wish, your highness.”
