witchy things to keep away from pets

Unfortunately, witchcraft can be pretty toxic to our pets. This post has birds in mind since I’m a bird owner, but it generally applies to most pets including cats and dogs.

Things you should DEFINITELY KEEP AWAY/HEAVILY RESEARCH before using around pets:

essential oils (specific ones are said to be toxic to specific animals. i say just keep that shit away from them period.)

certain flowers (lillies are toxic to cats. many different flowers are toxic to birds.)

scented candles

paraffin candles (these can excrete fumes and make nasty smoke. use beeswax unscented candles with cotton wicks if you want to use candles.)

incense (be especially careful with this as it can travel through your whole house pretty easily)

certain herbs/dried plants

smoke (birds have extremely delicate respiratory systems and anything like smoke or overly scented items can be detrimental)

juniper / sage (juniper used in saining is toxic to birds)

Some things are safe as long as not used in the same room, but even then, you should still be careful. Teflon, a coating used in nonstick pans can kill birds in under 40 minutes. Even when used in a different room, it can travel through the ventilation system of your house and get to your pet. The same can apply to other thing. Use extreme caution when using anything scented or smokey.

taking care of yourself is magickal. drinking water is magickal. doing your skin-care is magickal. moving your body is magickal. admitting you need help and accepting that help is magickal. learning when to rest is magickal. eating food that makes you feel good and nourishes you is magickal. spending time with people that make you happy is magickal. spending time on your hobbies is magickal. resisting the urge to slip back into self-destructive or self-harming behaviors is magickal. saying no to what doesn't serve you is magickal.

learning how to love yourself even when you hate yourself is, in itself, magickal. not only because you are a witch and everything you do is magick, but because the fundamental idea behind magick and witchcraft is honoring every living thing and being unconditionally kind and loving. even towards yourself. especially towards yourself. and especially if you feel like you don't deserve that kind of love. trust me, you do.

full moons used to be exciting but much like everything else, it has only turned into a source of guilt for me because im chronically ill and always too tired for my craft anymore. it's really depressing how this illness (multiple illnesses) just continue to take everything from me that has brought me any joy

that being said, I try to integrate magic wherever I can in my daily life, usually in the form of self-care

nothing is more sacred than tending to yourself <3

sometimes a sign only becomes clear weeks or months after the fact - not because you missed it at the time, but because the message was not yet decipherable with the knowledge you had then

When it comes to witchcraft and cooking, I see the same thing a lot

When stirring, go clockwise is for positive intentions, counterclockwise is for negative intentions

And honestly, I think that might be right-handed centric

I'm a lefty and clockwise is unnatural to me, I find counterclockwise to be easier and takes less thought and I wonder if the opposite is true for righties

hey idk who needs to hear this but you don't need to use every single herb and crystal known to man in your craft

you can do multiple things with one item

and if it works for you then there's no reason to switch it up to something more obscure just for the sake of doing so
