sekhmet too!
I think it is extremely important for everyone in the Greek mythology community to know that even though Greeks can have light skin and light hair, and that white supremacists like talking about Ancient Greece and using statues as their profile pictures, it doesn't mean white supremacists actually like Greek people.
White supremacists use Ancient Greece to insert themselves and their beliefs, completely erasing an accurate Ancient Greece and actual Greek people and culture from the narrative. There's a reason why when discussing the casting of Helen in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, they only show pictures of blonde, blue-eyed, Germanic, or Anglo-Saxon women, and never actresses who are actually Greek or of Greek descent. Just like how a black woman playing Helen is an issue to them, a Greek woman playing Helen is also an issue to them.
Since the very beginning of the concept of whiteness, beginning in the 19th century, white supremacists have excluded Greek people from whiteness, like they did for other ethnicities that you may now consider white, such as the Irish and Italians. Whiteness did not exist before the 19th century. When whiteness was conceptualized, it was purposefully created to not just view people native to the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania as lesser than, but to also view other Europeans as lesser than.
Even if Greeks are viewed as white today, white supremacists still won't accept them because their culture does not fit into their vision of whiteness, and they don't accept them as descendants of the Ancient Greeks because they think it is impossible for them to be related to a past where they've inserted their perfect image of white society onto.

What makes something a closed practice? Why is Wicca bad?
Me and jelly mod have been thinking this over, and this is what we came up with
A practice is open if:
- it Doesn’t hold any religious significance, or is so widespread that it’s been encountered many times in day to day life
- Had an empire or was co-opted by an empire (such as Hellenism co-opting Egyptian stuff, and the Roman’s co-opting Celtic stuffs)
- Hasn’t got an initiation process before even beginning to practice
- Hasn’t been prosecuted modernly (post renaissance)
So stuff like western Christianity (Think Catholicism and Anglican) under this are open, anyone can walk into a church, worship and anyone can choose to be a Christian. Many Christians aren’t baptised and it’s seen as a formality, being seen as a child of God instead of someone random, but anyone can practice Christianity. But Native American practices are closed because the initiation process is being born part of a tribe.
The only thing I will say on point four is that Cymru has been prosecuted modernly and as a result our religion and paganism has died to the point where it’s impossible to reconstruct. This doesn’t mean you cannot practice welsh paganism, but there’s more limitations within language and such. Honestly, we want people to practice because otherwise it’ll be completely forgotten and we have no one interested in it
Why is Wicca bad?
Wicca, quite frankly, is built on appropriation and racism and it’s impossible to escape. Everything. The founder was a racist xenophobe.
BEING ECLECTIC ISN’T BAD, APPROPRIATION IS

Altoid & Tin Pocket Altars:
Pocket games for Artemis and Hermes.
Crow tin with all your shiny trinkets for Apollo.
Miniature bookshelf for Athena.
Mini vanity tin with a hand mirror for Aphrodite.
Tiny bed for a Tiny figurine [like Sylvanian Families] for Hestia.
Memory box with photos and trinkets you got from your loved ones for Hera.
Altoid Postcard full of items specific to a town you live in or are visiting for Iris.
Hiking essentials for Artemis.
Keeping in mind all of the racist, appropriative, and New Age-y elements of The Magic Of Tarot: Your Guide To Intuitive Readings, Rituals, And Spells by Sasha Graham, I have to say that "remove the scary cards from your deck and don't read to predict misfortune" is the part that finally broke me and made me DNF this book at page 72.
1 out of 10, I wouldn't even use it to wipe my ass. I will not recommend this book and I will not recommend this author. This book singlehandedly turned me off of her work forever.
Here are some of the really bad parts of it near the end where I finally gave up!
This editing error where it was changed to black instead of blank, showing that no one actually fucking read through this book to edit it.
Section of note: A card a day. This practice is described later in this chapter. Dedicate a section to recording your daily pulls and insights. Begin with a black sheet of paper. Write your question on the top of the paper: "What do I need to know today?"
It was obviously meant to say blank rather than black.
This passage which made me go "girl, what?"
Section of note: Reading for pregnant women is something to consider before an expectant mother shows up in front of your cards. Are you willing to say or show something that could frighten a woman who is soon to be in the hospital? Consider the power of suggestion. The image of the Death card can be terrifying to one unfamiliar with its nuanced meaning. Do not run the risk of frightening or stressing out a pregnant woman. Avoid it altogether. Would you really want to bear the weight of responsibility for a woman in her last trimester to see the Eight or Nine of Swords or something equallly spooky that she might internalize? I have made it a personal rule to never read for a pregnant woman and highly advise you to do the same.
Honestly the section below it about drugs and alcohol is equally cringe-worthy but I was so fucking baffled by "cards may scare pregnant women" that I didn't even process the next paragraph.
And finally, the thing that broke me once and for all, the part where the author says to just remove scary cards from the deck because they might scare your querents.
Section of note: Remove scary cards if they freak you out. Tarot should not feel frightening. If something bothers you, remove it until you are ready to integrate it. You might consider removing scary cards when reading tarot for the public. Remove the Death card when reading for strangers since people tend to take that card at face value. You never know who is going to walk up or what experience or assumptions they hold about tarot cards. What if an eleven-year-old with a sick mother walks up to your table and pulls the Death card? Do you want to be responsible for putting that image in a child's mind? There is no right or wrong answer, but it is something for you to consider.
I love how she says "there's no right or wrong answer" after giving you instructions and leading you to what she obviously thinks is the right answer.
Overall, the infantilization of everyone in this book is one of its most annoying qualities, but I cannot stress enough that the repeated racism, appropriation, and New Age bullshit is enough on its own for me to rank it a 1 out of 10. Genuinely, skip this one.
Make your own photo collage for a deity:
Flower [associated with them or one that reminds you of them]
Beverage [a drink offering you give them the most]
Weather [type associated with them or one that feels most like them]
Colour [corresponding with them]
Table [offerings, trinkets, a view of everything you have for them]
Animal [one associated with them or a drawing/figurine]
Early morning [the way you incorporate your deity in your morning routine]
Altar [space dedicated to them]

Nolan's Odyssey & The Western View of Greek Culture
New mandatory-viewing video for the lovers of Greek myth and ancient Greek religion just dropped! If you're going to watch one video about how the West has mistreated Greek culture and people, let it be this!
It's an extremely informative and comprehensive essay by a non-Greek who knows the culture from the inside and has studied the historical trends of cultural misappropriation surrounding the West and Greek myths.
If you are not familiar with this issue, I promise you will emerge much wiser and more respectful from this viewing.
If you are going to bash any religion, Abrahamic or not, please at least know what you're talking about and have the full context to all the things you're trying to bash. It's embarrassing to see my fellow witches make the same ignorant comments that Christians make
fooor the love of bougatsa please respect the language of the most ancient hymns of the Greek gods you worship and really take in that the word "Hellenic" is actually the Greek word for "Greek". Realize that Greeks use it and have been using it generations ago, and that you are probably - unintentionally - misusing it today.
You don't say "I am a Norse" if you are a "Norse pagan", or a "Norse polytheist". You don't say "my religion is Slavism" when you are taking the worship of ancient Slavic gods. So please make sure you are using the Greek word correctly and don't say that you are just "a Hellenic"? Ok so what, why am I talking about grammar all of a sudden?
The main reason I'm emphasizing this is: do you know what the "Hellenic community"/"Hellenism"/"Hellenismos" is literally used for? The Greek people. The Greek community. The Greek culture. That's how Greeks self-identify and characterize their culture consistently since the creation of our state, the Hellenic Republic.
I am not saying don't use the word "Hellenic". I am saying use it appropriately! But please don't use "Hellenismos"/"Hellenism" as a substitute for "Hellenic polytheism".
The ancient religion with the name "Hellenismos" is not the same as a generic worship of some Greek gods today. It referred to a specific ancient belief system that I haven't seen one Hellenic polytheist online use. (Maybe they exist but they are very rare)
It baffles and upsets many Greeks when they learn about how foreign polytheists are using the terms. The younger ones have a milder averse reaction but if I say it to my Greek aunt or parents? Ooof... It's going to blow their mind and not in a good way. Because for them/us the fact that's they miss you are very important words for "Greek" and "Greekness" while loving the ancient Greek culture and religion shows disrespect. It's disrespectful to the people who are on average the most exposed to the myths and Hellenic antiquity since birth, and safekeep the heritage and cultural riches of our country.
I know that "Hellenismos"* has been used wrong for some years now but can the foreign community slowly unlearn it? It's not a traditional Anglophone name, or so blended with the English language that such use is normalized in Anglophone societies. Its modern use is very recent and it started by misinformed individuals (who may or may not had viewed Greek culture in a fetishizing way) back when things were not very culturally sensitive, and we were viewed by the international community as not being capable enough to care for our Parthenon marbles.
*or it's English version, "Hellenism"
If many Greek scholars hadn't left for Central Europe after the fall of Constantinople, you wouldn't have so much material or interest about our antiquity today. We were never cut from the myths and the gods, even if it's not our ethnic religion, and we safekept many things in the face of danger (no exaggeration here). Apparently I need to state the obvious fact that the Greek people of all eras were an organic part of the process that lead you to learn about these gods.
Please respect our traditional identification terms as a nation. It's not much to ask.
* I already have some posts on this matter and I can link them for you if you ask, but that's the gist of it. As you understand I'm not going to hunt down anyone with a pitchfork. I am just taking the issue out there one more time.
✨ I will also address the "Hellenism religion" part better later today. I didn't expect the post to gain such traction so I didn't explain much (bc it would be long and I would digress), but people are rightfully curious. Thanks for your patience! ✨
✨ It's here! ✨
Above I wrote:
The ancient religion with the name “Hellenismos” is not the same as a generic worship of some Greek gods today. It referred to a specific ancient belief system that I haven’t seen one Hellenic polytheist online use.
What did I mean by this? To what belief system I was referring to? Let's find out in the following wall of text 😂
*I will use "Greek" and not "Hellenic" to not confuse you further, but know they are the same thing. The "another religion" I mentioned is at the bottom but to get some context, please read the whole of the text.
I'm currently not in a place where I can have an altar or do much for the gods (I can even pray much because my family doesn't know and I don't want to tell them yet)
But I feel bad that all I really do is wear jewelry for them and I forget to so often
Is there anything you know of I could do for the gods? That would be easy enough to not get caught doing?
Firstly, I want to write that it's okay to not have an altar. You don't have to have it. And it's okay to forget. After ten years of worship, I forget too. It's human nature, and the Gods know that.
Eat more fruit or veggies associated with your Deity. (Hera - Apple, Dionysus - Grapes, Athena - Olives, etc)
I think that can be pretty easy to explain. You just like it more, or your taste changed, and boom, you like it. Things like olives are also easy to add to a salad without raising suspicion. Desserts with a specific flavouring can be easy to find and make.
Wear graphic t-shirts with your Deity's animal symbol. (Athena - Owls, Hestia - Cow, Hades - Dog, etc)
It doesn't need to be your favourite animal out of nowhere. Just a t-shirt that you like, and it just so happened to have a pretty animal on it.
The same with plants and other symbols (Selene - Moon, Hera - Peacock, Aphrodite - Roses, etc)
It's a pretty shirt OR ANYTHING REALLY. I used to have a cookie-shaped coaster for Lady Hestia. And it just was, nothing groundbreaking, just a way to connect to her every day. A simple thing that you use every day, like a mug or a plate with a pretty design.
Go digital.
Pinterest boards, movies, YouTube videos, taking pictures and videos. I know a lot of people enjoy dress-up games to make their Deities.
Taking pictures of things that remind you of your Deity throughout the day and putting them in a designated folder. Maybe collaging too.
Meditation.
It's not only sitting cross-legged on a pillow. Of course, if you want to do that, sure. But you can also go for a walk and meditate on your Deity. Or lie down in your bed, say you're going to relax or take a nap, and meditate. Focus on your Deity. Let your mind run free.
Media that reminds you of your Deity.
That means games that focus on a domain of your Deity (Athena - Strategy games, Hestia - cosy TV Shows, Poseidon - Ocean Documentaries).
HOBBIES AND CRAFTS
My favourite and the most versatile in my opinion. I don't think anyone would question hobbies. Embroidery, you can make a dolphin for Amphitrite or a flower for Persephone. Something simple enough to go unnoticed but meaningful for you.
Hang your hats/caps on a wall, near an exit. [mentioned that a few times in my Artemis posts already, but try adding a little "A" on the inside of your hat]
Keep memorabilia from your hikes and parks.
Make a banner for your favourite hiking destination.
Print out pictures of you hiking, the beautiful scenery, and make a wall gallery of them.
Make a wreath of items you found on your forest walk. [pines, fallen branches and dried flowers]
Design your own calendar, with your favourite scenery from your hikes and outdoor adventures. [or imagery of animals dedicated to Artemis]
Hang a map of your favourite park or dream destination [add little notes, doodles and photos]
