wow okay i'm sorry that you find me so unsettling and hard to be around because i look almost exactly the same as i did before i died but something just isn't quite right and my personality isn't the same as i was in your (honestly pretty unfaithful and self centered!) memories of me and you're kind of starting to regret raising me from the dead. as if it's my fault 🙄

“That assuming I even believe you in ‘Devil’,” he huffed back, airquoting her. “But if I did he might have ask for.. little favours in exchange of… cooperation when things were really, really, really difficult after,” he gestured with his head, his arms folded for the lack of his wine glass. “That situation.” He cleared his throat and stood extra tall glaring at her, ready to fire back if she decided to mock him.
He really needed that drink.
Mayla nodded a little as she took that in. “…Okay. Let’s just… take this slowly, from the top.”
She turned and sat back down, hoping he’d do the same once he calmed down. She refilled Valerius’ cup as a sort of peace offering, then set it down and started gathering up the cards. They didn’t need the Devil staring back at them while they tried to sort this out.
“Let’s forget about the cards for a moment, yes? We’re here to discuss the case, after all.” She intertwined her fingers under her chin and leaned on them. “You mentioned that you thought perhaps the other courtiers were angry with Count Lucio when he was dying, correct? Now that we can speak freely, can you elaborate at all on that?”
Valerius, still tense and with his feathers ruffled but nonetheless glad the attention somewhat shifted from his involvement in the whole Lucio debacle. It allowed him to shift a little into a more comfortable stance but still one of faked superiority.
"Yes," he replied. He took the cup but didn't sit down. Higher ground and all that. "It was all strange. No one truly missed Lucio," he sneered looking into the liquid in his cup. "But there was some extra animosity towards him from the Trio. They all were always an odd group..." He swirled the cup before taking a sip.
As he spoke, his shoulders relaxed further as he took a trip back the memory lane. There was a chance he might even sit down.

Ah, he slipped. He felt annoyed with himself. He should just leave here, remove himself from this ridiculous case.
“How does this even tie with Count Lucio’s murder!?” He rebuked. “There’s nothing- I didn’t sign up for- whatever this interrogation is!” Defensive? Most likely. He was cornered and was looking for an out.
“Plenty!” Mayla threw her arms out in disbelief. “Consul, you are the star witness, and Dr. Devorak’s accuser! You have more to do with this case than anyone, second only to the accused and the Count himself!”
Valerius was, also, technically, a key suspect, if Mayla’s gut instincts were right and the doctor was innocent. But she figured accusing Valerius directly would be the final straw, so she had no intention of letting that on if she could help it.
She took a deep breath, composing herself. “The question is simple, and actually doesn’t have much to do with you, as much as it does the Devil. ‘What did he stand to gain by dealing with you?’ The answer to that might crack this whole case open. Please, Consul. I can’t do this without your help.” A little flattery might not hurt.

Mayla was, to be perfectly blunt, new at this.
She was only an apprentice hunter, after all. Her master, a slightly younger but much more experienced hunter, had finally dubbed her ready for a real mission. He then promptly left to follow a lead about a particularly troublesome count he’d been chasing for some time.
So Mayla was on her own, relying on her training to help her sneak into her target’s home.
Her heart was in her throat as she began to search the dark corridors. She was gripping a stake so hard her knuckles were turning white.
So it happened that the young huntress has stepped into the abode of Valerius. A peculiar type among the vampires. A vampire who had the perfect idea of what was going on in his castle (or so he thought).
When Mayla entered his home it took him a moment to gather himself, as he had fallen asleep in front of the fireplace, dressed up to his nines. He checked the clock and frowned grabbing a glass of fine blood he teleported to the corridor and appeared behind the huntress.
"Do you have any idea, how late you are?" he spoke suddenly, very offended.

He stopped looking at her half a deer caught in headlights and half as if she slapped him and he couldn’t get over the audacity.
“This is utterly ridiculous, I shouldn’t have agreed to this,” he muttered to himself and pinched the bridge of his nose. “What are even the chances a stupid card character would go out its way and pay me a visit in a dream?” He asked Mayla still feeling slightly annoyed.
“…I didn’t say anything about a dream.” Mayla nervously wrung her hands. Ooooh, this was bad.
“Did he come to you in a dream? What did he say to you, exactly? What did he offer you? Please, Consul, it could be very important to this whole mystery and to yourself!”
