Where's a good website to buy or order patterns for relatively cheap?
Ebay allows you find really retro patterns and may be cheap. Amazon can be cheap sometimes. You can also purchase from the pattern brand websites directly, they have the occasional sale where you can get a deal. Lastly, etsy has a variety of shops where people sell old patterns and their own pattern creations.Anyone else have a suggestion?
Disclaimer: I am not a professional wig stylist. This is just a trick that I found works for me on some of my wigs that I’ve accidentally fried. It will not work on all types of wigs but it should work on most. A good rule of thumb is to always test the heat of a flat iron on a small section of your wig that doesn’t show before you start straitening it. Hopefully, if you follow this rule you will not run into the problem of frying your wig. If you do over heat your flat iron and you melted the fibers into a hard lump, sorry, but it’s probably not recoverable.
Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to message me http://cosplaying-on-a-budget.tumblr.com/ask
1/19/14 http://shinjigif.tumblr.com/ added: I’ve got a tip for straightening a wig: If you have a straightener that doesn’t have heat settings and you cant put it on a lower heat, try to put some parchment/wax paper (i dont really know what its called but its the paper you bake things on) around it!! it lowers the heat and makes it safer for your wig! Remember to always try this out on a strand that people won’t notice when you wear it!!
1/9/14 Anonymous wanted to clarify that parchment paper should be used since wax paper will melt into your wig.

What any cosplayer needs to survive a convention:
No matter how prepared I think I am for a convention I always seem to leave something important at home. To fix this I keep a small bag packed with items I know I can’t survive without in case I forget to pack them into my regular luggage.
I feel that I really need to go over some safety tips for cosplayers, not just for online, but for at cons, as well. It’s important we all try to remain as safe as possible, and it’s sad that we constantly have to watch our backs like this, but this is reality.
Secure any loose ties, ESPECIALLY...
These are just some tips i thought of. So i just put this together. You are entitled to your own opinion about things and are do not have to follow any of these “tips” or believe they are actually worth shit.
Feel free to message me or my cosplay blog if you have any questions.
Ever have trouble finding boots in the right color? Tried spray-painting them and ended up with a dry, cracked mess? A fantastic friend recently advised me to paint leather boots (and any other leather goods) with floral paint. This is a spray paint that is light and flexible enough to use on live flowers. Above are the Poison Ivy boots I painted for a friend, which turned out fantastic.
One thing though: Wear them while you paint them, and maybe stretch your foot around in between coats. I didn’t think of this, and while the paint did not crack at all, it started to split where the boots were stretched from walking. Next time I paint some boots, I’ll let you know if I was able to fix this problem.
The paint I used is called Design Master, and you can find it at Michael’s or Joann Fabrics. In the stores near me, Michael’s had a better selection of colors and a slightly better price, but that may not be true everywhere. This color is “Holiday Green.”
Cosplay-Make up [For male characters] by ~JackyChip
And eye makeup for male characters! Whoo! Because I found out the hard way if you don’t but a crap ton of makeup on your eyes, then it will look like no makeup on your eyes. It’s a pain in the butt, but the right makeup looks really awesome
Let me make this clear
This is cosplay
[x]
Cosplay is about having fun.
[x]
You’re skin tone should never be a problem.
[x]
Nor should it influence the characters you want to be.
[x]
Whether your natural skin tone matches a character’s or not,
[x]
It doesn’t matter!
[x]
You can cosplay whoever you want.
[X]
or whatever you want!
[X]
And don’t let anyone tell you different!

Yoooo!! You guys have been asking me to do a list of preparations fro SDCC after doing one for Wondercon. So here it is! Everything you should take care of and get ready for the next four days!
Tonight remember to…:
Take a shower
Exfoliate!
TAKE AN AIRBORNE — Do not risk getting CON...
I’ve gotten a lot of asks wondering how I make the fangs shown above so here is my easy cheap trick:
• Buy plain fake nails from the store (ex: walgreens, cvs, beauty supply, it’s all cheap really and with a whole pack you can make as many as you want or reuse your old ones!)
• Use scissors to cut out fangs to fit your teeth. (Use a size up from your tooth so it will lie flat.)
• Purchase denture glue (yes that stuff that old folks use to keep their fake teeth in with)
• Apply a small amount to the back of the fake nail/tooth and hold it on to your tooth until it feels secure. (Your lips will help keep it in, don’t worry if it moves when you push it with your tongue.)
Voila! You’re the inhuman creature you have always wished to be. Just.. you know… don’t eat anything except liquids or your dreams will come crashing down.
Eternally Yours,
Malefactum

How to make your Makeup Last
One of the most common questions I am asked is “How do I make my makeup last?” Long wearing formulas are great and all but for makeup that lasts the whole day a little more effort is required. This tutorial will teach you everything you need to know and every step you need to complete to keep your face makeup in place all day and all night.
Start off by cleansing your skin. I find regular facial wipes work best before makeup application but a good proper cleanse never hurt anyone.
