This blog was probably the most useful for the assignment. Within this source I found the discussions and a few videos. 

The blogs contain a lot of opinion which is good for discussions but the facts are in the video content. The first two videos are by news channels( Associated Press, and ABC). Teaming with rhetorical appeal it will be easy to spot. In the first video immediately displayed is appeal to emotion. Surveillance footage shows a man walking and texting on a train platform and mindlessly fall on the tracks.(pathos) The next video by ABC they lay on the ethos, by interviewing er doctors who have dealt with patients who have been injured by distracted walking. The ER doctor goes on to say that there are a variety of injuries from “pelvic, femoral to C- spine injuries” that are normally associated with distracted walking. They go on to interview a police officer who provided statistical knowledge about the prevalence of distracted walking(ethos and logos). Surprisingly the injuries due to distracted walking number in the thousands and including dozens of fatalities. The blog itself focuses on distracted walking, most agree that it is a hazard to yourself and the others around you. In the segment by ABC it is referred to as an “epidemic” because many are injured in accidents caused by distracted walking. Associated press says its because “They get caught up in their phone and social media and are in their own world.”

This is an interesting topic and I was wondering what you though over the distracted walking laws and if you think they could help decrease people from texting and walking?

The use of Induction helped establish logos in my video. I gave many reasonable examples on how to overcome and prevent obesity, through trustworthy resources, like nutritionists and doctors. The advocacy of my video is informative because I explained in great detail all of the diseases caused by obesity, and what types of food lead to becoming overweight.

At end of the video you placed the phrase “exercise smarter, not harder,” but you didn’t really elaborate a lot on that. Can you explain what do you mean by exercising smarter?

DSA Presentation

To start, one of the main rhetorical choices made in this video is the constant visual illustration of artificial intelligence. The video gives various images while explaining how artificial intelligence is used in certain scenarios in order to help the audience better understand the topic and the examples given in the video. This type of imagery is specific to this genre because as oppose to a written paper, a video is capable of being more creative and show various pictures and animation for the audience to better understand. In the video the author is mainly trying to use logos in order to calm the fear of artificial intelligence, giving facts and examples of how artificial intelligence is far away from destroying humanity and instead proving how helpful it will be to society.

DSA Reflection

1. What was your process in selecting your sources?

My overall process in selecting my sources was not very professional. I mainly looked through various amount of information online and went through countless sources. I would read or view the source and analyze it to see how compatible it was towards my topic. After selecting around 10 different sources, I picked from those 10, 4 sources that seemed to be more related to each other.

2. How do you understand the difference between traditional and non-traditional sources?

I find that the difference between a traditional source and a non-traditional source has to do mainly with the location in which you find the source. A typical traditional source would be an article found in a credible journal or magazine as oppose to a non-traditional source, which could be found anywhere. Also, a traditional source is much more formal and professional with a good amount of information while a non-traditional source tends be more about the authors opinion.

3. What did you enjoy/dislike about using non-traditional sources?

I enjoyed using non-traditional sources because there was much more information to choose from making me feel less stressed over being able to find some type of information but that did come with some concern over whether some sources were reliable which was a bit more time consuming, trying to figure out if a source was credible enough for my paper and that was the main dislike I had about using them.

4. Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question.

In question 3, I tried to focus more on pathos as the question relates to how I felt towards using non-traditional sources. By using words like stress and concern I believe I managed to invoke some sort of emotion with the reader so they could better understand how I felt.

I did the Digital Source Analysis and I found that looking for sources online as oppose to the database is very different. In the database there is not much articles to choose from but you feel more confident with the small amount of article because you know that they have some credibility since you found them in the database but when search for a source online you have a bigger amount of article to look at but you also have to be careful as a lot of the information online is very useless and a waste of time.

Although I had to be careful in looking for credible source I overall found it to be easier mainly because most of the sources which I needed did not have to be extremely formal which allowed me to be less strict over what sources to pick.

One particular source I found was a youtube video titled how dangerous is artificial intelligence. I had decided that at least one of my sources should be a video and therefore I went search in youtube. I found this video and decided to watch it entirely and found it to very valuable information related to my semester topic and seemed very formal and that is why I shows to write about it.

Week 10: Lit Review Reflection

1. Overall I found myself constantly rereading information as well as trying to obtain as much information as possible. The development of my research skills seemed to have improved as I would often thinking twice about using information of a source and thinking how it could be used in relation to other sources I had previously read. So in a sense I was somewhat multi tasking my ideas trying to figure out the best way to construct a good Lit Review.

2. My assessment over certain sources would in fact change as I continued with my research due to the fact that at times I would find that one source would not fit together with the information that I had previously obtained or that after reading more information I would find that it was in fact not relevant to what I was trying to accomplish.

3. I do feel that the methodology used in the previous two question works as I managed to create a lit review that I am relatively happy with. By constantly rereading sources and thinking how everything will fit together while obtaining information I managed to kill two birds with one stone and avoid having relook for information.

4. In question 1, I attempted to use mainly logos to answer the question as I used facts about actual events, and also incorporated specific numbers related to the topic in an attempt of the reader to better understand the information that was found.

Week 7

Explain your process in searching through multiple platforms/database and in obtaining different types of sources and multiple perspectives for the Literature Review.

My process for searching through various platforms involves a lot of scholarly articles so most of the time I am going through UTEP’s database and collecting various articles that mention my topic. I then read the abstract to better understand what the papers will be about and if the abstract has enough information about my topic I skim through the entire paper looking to see if it is in fact relevant to what I am trying to accomplish.

1.Before this paper I had some sort of knowledge about genres, as I did know that there is a different way of trying to get your message across to your audience by the way in which you use a specific genre. By studying genres I feel that I will be more aware of what would be the best way of getting my message out. I will be able to understand that with a video I tend to have more liberty to use music and animation but that by writing an article I have to use a different strategy in order to get the same response from a specific audience.

2.There are various complexities of using a genre for instance one image may mean something to a certain person but a completely different thing to another person. It is important that you understand this, as you have to be able to manipulate this situation in order to achieve the goals you have in regards to your audience. 

3.The studying and writing about genres is very valuable because it helps you be more aware of how to persuade or inform your audience and learn the specific technics that certain authors use in order to get that done

4.In the first question I used a gif in which Ellen is just saying “I know that,” which I used in order to emphasize how I knew certain aspects of what a genre is but knowing that Ellen is very comical it shows that I do know  a bit about genres but not the whole thing

Week 3 tumblr post

I decided to grade Campus Violence against Women, written by Maria Eugenia Martinez. My grade for this paper would have to be an A without a doubt. The authors states perfectly what the topic is about and manages to point out everything asked by the outline. It allows uses very good examples of each of the genres in order to support the paper.

The introduction of the paper clearly states the topic in a very detailed manner and goes on to present the two genres that will be analyzed. This information is important because from the start anyone who reads this paper will understand what the topic is, and what two genres are being analyzed.

In my opinion, I feel the author of the paper is more focused on the way each genre is constructed. The author of the paper is able to keep her opinion and though completely out of her writing making it easier for her to focus only on the way each genre communicates its message.

I do believe that the student examples gives sufficient details and examples to support the analysis.

The purpose of this genre is to help people understand the challenges and questions being asked about the use of driverless cars. The audience is mainly the general public and everyday drivers. Some of the rhetorical aspects regarding this genre would be the construction of credibility which is done by mentioning that this is a TED-Ed as an introduction, which is part of the ethos, evoking a sense of fear and concern from the audience using specific type of background music, which part of the pathos, and the countless real life scenarios used to describe the challenges behind driverless cars is part of the logos.

My name is Adrian Cosio and I am currently a Junior studying physics and mechanical engineering. Many may ask me why am I taking english so late and my answer to that would be that I wanted to focus more on my math classes and my degree courses sooner rather than later.

Something you can say about me is that I love soccer. It is my passion and I have been involved in playing, watching, and being a fan of soccer since I was a little kid.

My writing goals for this semester and class are not many. I simply want to receive credit for this class but as well I want to start writing again and improve my skills as it is my plan to start applying to graduate schools and taking the GRE, so it is important that I have good writing skills to improve my scores in the GRE and create a good piece of writing for graduate school that require it on their application. Other than that I hope this semester goes smooth.
