Genre Analysis Reflection

My Genre Analysis was about the impacts of new Technology in Business. Prior to completing this assignment, my knowledge about this topic was somewhat average. I researched and compared scholarly articles with websites and images. I believe I did fulfill the purpose and met the criteria of the assignment by distinguishing the different genres and acknowledging the ethos, pathos, and logos. I learned how each type of genre is effective in their own way and also how technology has a very important impact in business transactions today. I would like to continue to be able to distinguish what genres work best for different situations as I move on in my career. My writing and revision processes were really effective as I believe I did this assignment to my best potential. The readings on types of analysis for Week 3 really helped me out to complete this assignment effectively.

Week 5 GA Reflection

1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing?    

Before this assignment I didn’t know much about genres, the only genres I knew about where genres related to books such as fiction, non-fiction, drama, and medical. I think this misconception was due to the fact that during my previous schooling we never talked about genre analysis apart from those in books. I think that a positive impact can result by studying genres in our writing because it allows us to better understand the components of most genres and better write a genre analysis. I believe that by studying genres we can better get our point across because some genres are better at expressing our feelings.

2. What are the complexities of using genres?   

Some complexities of genre analysis are learning how to present only the information given and staying away from giving an opinion or arguing about the information given. Also, at times it’s easy to go off topic and end up with an un-desired result. Additionally, it’s important to fully understand the meaning and purpose behind the genre or media and what the genre is trying to get across, or in other words be able to better analyze the content.

3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?   

The value or purpose of studying and/or writing about genres helps the writer better comprehend an assignment, reading, or visual genre. This allows the writer to know what elements to look for when exposed to genres. Also like previously stated by studying genres we can better know what genre appeals better to your targeted audience when trying to get a point across.

The rhetorical devices such as gif’s used to express my answer to question 3 are images that depict the process of understanding, the first gif proves that you can’t be wrong when being confused on a topic, meanwhile the second gif proves all the hard work and effort made to be able to complete the assignment. In this case just as the first gif, i too was confused on what had to be done to be able to complete the assignment to the instructor’s expectations, yet, once i learned what had to be done and i understood the assignment i was able to successfully complete the assignment.

1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing? A few semesters ago I took an English literature course that covered the topic of genres. The material that was covered was similar but not in such great detail. I do believe that studying genres will greatly impact my writings at school and at work. I can better tailor my writings and presentations at work and convey my message to my co-workers and supervisors by keeping my target audience in mind and using a professional looking format. 2. What are the complexities of using genres? The complex part of using genres is choosing the right genre that fits for your message and still targets your intended audience.  Understanding the limitations of each genre then tailoring the structure of the genre to meet your needs. Take a work memorandum for example. It would be inefficient to use web blog, video, or photo to pass the memo to employees when they are required to have it printed and placed in a binder for future reference by station employees.  The textual document using the common vocabulary for the discourse community would be the best choice. 3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres? The value of studying genres is that it allows you to see and understand how each genre is different but more importantly what benefits each genre offers. There are two clear benefits in reading a genre analysis that has been written for a discourse community that you are involved in or interested in. This can help you understand and see if the genre was effective in reaching the audience and if it didn’t, you can see what could have been done differently. Secondly it gives insight into the community, specifically vocabulary/terminology, and current issues.                                                                                                                4. For example, if you choose a gif to help communicate your answer to the question, then you must explain why you chose that specific image. Briefly describe the rhetorical choices you made? For question number 2 I chose the image because it relates to the topic of memos as a genre. Memos because of their association to “work” and their rigidness can become tedious and boring. The image makes fun of this aspect of the genre.

On the first question I decided to include memes about proof and evidence because when analyzing the genres the hardest thing for me to do was including the evidence in my reflection. Sometimes it was hard for me to provide evidence to prove what I was saying.

I selected question number two because genre analysis and its complexities is an ever existing theme in college writing. Without full knowledge of what’s expected and not grasping genres complicates any forward progress while writing. I used the Calvin and Hobbes comic because that is exactly what will occur if any assignments are turned in that are considered mediocre.

GA REFLECTION

1. How does studying genres impact your writing? iWhat are the complexities of using genres?

At first when people start studying the topic of genres it may be a little confusing to understand. People tend to confused genres with writing styles.

2.  How does studying genres impact your writing? Once people understand completely genres they will feel more comfortable in analyzing different types of text and be able to identify some of the features that characterize and make unique a text, picture, or video.

3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?

The value of studying and writing about genres resides in the capacity that the reader and writer will get to analyse and evaluate different types of texts, also identify the special characteristics that text has that makes it different from the other writing compositions.

4.Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question. For question number three I chose two pictures, one that says “Become a writer they say, It will be fun they say.” this picture represents that when people are studying some type of writing technique, or in this case genres it seems difficult and hard to understand. The next picture says “Just keep writing...just keep writing.” this represents the idea that if a student keep practicing eventually you will come a better writer and will improve at the topic.
