This image is historic. It’s the first time humans saw the entire Earth with their own eyes. The Apollo 8 astronauts took this picture on as they ventured into deep space on December 1968. Till today only 24 humans had the chance to see the Earth from this distance.
There is no better place than space to realise the inherent unity and oneness of everything on the planet and the irreplaceable value it has for all of us.
Frank Borman, one of the three astronauts on bord of the Apollo 8 spacecraft said:
The view of the Earth from the Moon fascinated me – a small disk, 240,000 miles away… Raging nationalistic interests, famines, wars, pestilence don’t show from that distance.

The Cosmic Watch is not just a clock, it’s an astronomical instrument which visualizes the cycles of Earth and the solar system, helping to understand how we measure and experience time since thousands of years.
#frb_text_1439143517.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_1439143517.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
The Earth is the central focal point of the Cosmic Watch. It can be used to demonstrate the apparent movement of the sky and celestial objects around us. It also shows beautifully the concept of the celestial sphere and celestial coordinates used in navigation and to locate objects in the sky.

The Cosmic Watch is a virtual planetarium on your mobile device. It calculates the positions of the sun, moon, planets, stars and constellations, in relation to the earth and time. It gives us the possibility of observation from different points of view as well as to add several layers of information.

This view is centred on Earth. We call this a geocentric point of view. The sun, the planets and the sky rotating around Earth is an optical effect which happens because the earth is rotating every day on its own axis. The moon is the only celestial object actually rotating around the Earth.
We all know that the Earth and all the planets are rotating around the Sun. Seen from Earth it looks like the Sun is rotating around us, passing through all the zodiac constellations in a year.

The Solar System View shows the clockwork of the Cosmic Watch. This view has the option to see it from a geocentric or heliocentric perspective. The former has the Earth fixed in the centre and the latter the Sun – showing the real motion of the planets around their star. The geocentric view is handy to understand how we experience the solar system from Earth.
Fast-Forward time to see the planets moving and understand their apparent motion in the sky with the geocentric option. This is a clear representation of the retrograde motion of planets!
All orbits are represented in a realistic scale.

THE CLOCK
#frb_text_1341731895.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_1341731895.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
The clock face of the Cosmic Watch is set on the Ecliptic. The sun, the moon and the planets are always around this imaginary line, as this is somehow the plane of the solar system.
#frb_text_1891041523.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_1891041523.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
The time dial points from the selected location to the 24 hours clock face. This allows to visualize the day as one circle and see how much time has passed and how much of the day is left.
#frb_text_2018257524.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_2018257524.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;

An interesting property of the clock-face is that it shows at which approximate time the celestial bodies will be at the highest point in the sky. For example, the Sun pass the meridian approximately at 12 o’clock and a full moon will pass the meridian at approximately 12 o clock in the night.

The Time control is the main feature of the Cosmic Watch and holds the key of understanding the apparent motion of the sky.
#frb_text_768012772.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_768012772.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
To fast-forward the time is a mind blowing experience. It’s like watching a time-lapse video. Perhaps we don’t know how the future will be, but we know where the planets will be. (The cosmic Watch should be accurate for the next thousand years 🙂
#frb_image_1867344120.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_image_1867344120.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms; #frb_image_1867344120 .frb_image_hover background:#000000;

#frb_text_1211634971.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_1211634971.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
Tapping the fast-forward button consecutive times allows the user to speed up the Time. By one day per second the Cosmic Watch releases the Anchor so you don’t get crazy turning around! Note that on an earth scale this rate looks fast but on a solar system scale it’s still very slow.
#frb_image_1179336310.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_image_1179336310.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms; #frb_image_1179336310 .frb_image_hover background:#000000;

The ANCHOR is a very important function. With this button we can anchor the camera and rotate with the Earth. We call this a topocentric point of view. It’s like a geostationary satellite, like the ones we use for weather monitoring. (check links to find out more) With the anchor on, it looks like the sky is rotating around the Earth, like we experience from the Earth’s surface.
#frb_text_1484448501.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_text_1484448501.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms;
By releasing the Anchor the user can float freely in space around the Earth. The observer is still geocentric, (the Earth is at the center), but able to see that it’s actually the Earth which rotates around its own axis. The stars are the only objects that are fixed. Like this one can observe the moon moving around the Earth and the Sun’s apparent movement through the zodiac constellations.
#frb_image_1089162344.frb_onScreen.frb_animated -webkit-animation-duration: 1000ms; animation-duration: 1000ms;#frb_image_1089162344.frb_onScreen.frb_hinge -webkit-animation-duration: 2000ms; animation-duration: 2000ms; #frb_image_1089162344 .frb_image_hover background:#000000;

With the pause button you can stop fastforwarding or rewind time and get to a normal time flow at that specific moment. You can’t stop time on the cosmic watch, we did this on purpose, because this seems to be a quality of time, it never stops, it just keeps flowing!. When you press pause you will see at the bottom of the time control the time difference to now. With this feauture you can find out how many days old you are or how many days are left to your next birthday!

While fast forwarding time, the planets will leave a trace of their apparent movement as observed from Earth. Like this it is very easy to understand what a Retrograde motion looks like. Combined with the solar system view one can have a clear observation and visual understanding of why this phenomenon happens.

The horizon is a very important guide because it defines your actual vision of the sky. You can only see half of the sky because the other half is under the horizon. In combination with the time control you can find out when a celestial body is going to rise (pass the horizon to the East) and set (pass the horizon to the West)
You can switch on the horizontal coordiantes button to locate an object in the sky. This coordinate system is widly used in astronomy and celestial navigation. It also shows the zenith and the meridian of your location. (more info)

Use the compass to align your device to north. Unfortunately the compass is not always functioning very well depending on the specifications your device. But luckily you can find out where north is with the cosmic watch itself if the time and the location are correct. During the day you can align the cosmic watch with the sun and during the night you will need the moon, a planet clearly recognizable or any of the star constellations. This is how explorers on both land and sea use to navigate themselves.

This is the educational part of the cosmic watch. This option is named like this, in honor of the armillary sphere, which is still used to demonstrate the apparent movement of the sky and means “the instrument with the rings”. These are the main guidelines you need to know for observation of the sky.

The celestial equator is the projection of the Earth’s equator in the sky. The stars appear to move parallel to this line. To find it in the sky, find the Orion constellation. It passes over the equator, and as three stars aligned. This line is in a right angle (90°) with the celestial north and south poles, which are the center points of the apparent rotation of the sky because the axis of the Earth points towards them. (Precession) This line crosses the horizon exactly due East and West.

The Celestial Sphere is a simplified model of the sky, where all the stars are considered to be the same distance away from us, like on the surface of a sphere. It’s used for orientation and to locate objects in the sky.

Can’t find my town
They are 15’000 cities and big towns in the cosmic Watch database, but we couldn’t include every town on the world. (If you find an important city wich you think should be inside please write to the support mail).
shows UTC, not my location
At start up the Cosmic Watch will attempt to detect your approximate position using the localisation data of your phone or GPS, if activated. If for some reason this is not possible, the Cosmic Watch will show “UTC” (Coordinated Universal Time). Follow the steps on Search Locations to set up your clock manually.

Halo (optical phenomenon)
Halo is the name for a family of optical phenomena produced by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Halos can have many forms, ranging from colored or white rings to arcs and spots in the sky. Many of these are near the Sun or Moon, but others occur elsewhere or even in the opposite part of the sky. Among the best known halo types are the circular halo (properly called the 22° halo), light pillars and sun dogs, but there are many more; some of them fairly common, others (extremely) rare.
The ice crystals responsible for halos are typically suspended in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds high (5–10 km, or 3–6 miles) in the upper troposphere, but in cold weather they can also float near the ground, in which case they are referred to as diamond dust. The particular shape and orientation of the crystals are responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting light between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.
