Human!Reader in Phighting concept == "Cryptid of Crossroads" PART 8
It's about time this got an update!
Sword felt the air burning through his lungs as he sprinted back to where he lived with his mentor to collect the samples that Medkit had requested.
His sabatons clack loudly against the asphalt of the streets of crossroads as he continues his sprint, and the buildings around him slowly thinned to a fair amount--then they ceased their towering presence once he got to the familiar clearing that the warehouse he and his teacher lived in appeared on the horizon.
He could only smile widely before continuing his run down the dirt path and through the limited amount of foliage that led straight to the warehouse in the distance.
Only once Sword was directly at the doorstep of his shared abode did he pause and take a moment to catch his breath and wipe the accumulating sweat from his brow.
Upon opening the door to the warehouse, he had taken notice that his mentor was sitting in the living room reading a book quietly to himself, and upon hearing the front door open, he looked up to see who had entered their home.
"My, you're back early...did something happen, Sword?" His mentor inquires as Sword was still trying to catch his breath at the door.
"No! I mean...no, not really. I just came back home to pick something up for a friend. I forgot I left it here." Sword quickly explains while walking inside and closing the front door behind him.
"Hmm...I see. Well, as long as you are alright." Venomshank muses.
"Though, do you think you'll be able to make it back on time tonight or will I have to scold you for missing your curfew...again?" The Sword gently teases and his ward can only sheepishly smile.
"Don't worry! I'll...TRY to be on time tonight, teacher!" Sword says before starting to walk up the stairs that were behind where his mentor.
Yet, as Venomshank got up out of his seat to put the book back onto the shelf in the living room, Sword quickly found himself pausing in his movements to stare at his guardian.
Venom was a Sword. He was an ancient deity...right?
Maybe...maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask about the things that Medkit had mentioned back when they were all sitting around Sparky?
"Mentor?" Sword carefully speaks up, causing the deity who was looking over the spines of the books to angle his head slightly.
"Do...do you..." Sword takes a moment to think about how he was going to ask such an odd-sounding question to his teacher.
"Someone I know has been researching some old stuff they found about the Inpherno and there's some things that they mention that almost seem...otherworldly to me?" Sword admits.
Venom merely turns his head slightly, but keeps facing the bookshelf.
"You see...they found something interesting. Some old materials and such that contain information about these creatures called...Hornless." Sword gently admits.
He sees his teacher still entirely.
"They told me about how these "Hornless" used to exist alongside our kind in the ancient times of the Inpherno, but they told me they were all extinct now..." Sword allows a moment of silence to fill the room.
"Mentor? Did you ever meet a Hornless before?" Sword curiously inquires.
Venom stays silent for an eerie amount of time, which causes Sword to worry, but his teacher merely began to continue to read the spines of the books on the shelf before replying.
"Don't be so easily swayed by rumors, Sword. Hornless creatures are impossible to exist in the Inpherno, as having horns are a cornerstone of those who are real and are living. Such creatures are purely mythical and should be looked at with a deep amount of skepticism." Venom simply replies.
If Sword was a balloon, then he would have probably deflated on the spot at his mentor's response.
"Oh. . ." Sword mutters out in a manner of defeat before thinking quickly to bring up the local cryptid..
"Even the rumors about the Crossroads Cryptid? The same rumors that state that the spotted creature lurking about Crossroads is entirely hornless?" Sword continues.
Venomshank merely laughs in a good-natured way in response.
"Newspawns always come up with the most outrageous ways to entertain themselves. Such rumors have even reached my ears about this fabled "Crossroads Cryptid", but my answer is the same. Hornless creatures can't exist, as horns are vital for life." Venom continues before picking out a book from the shelf and briefly reading the summary.
Sword allows a little bit of his frustration to creep in.
"But...what if they ARE real, mentor? What if there IS a creature in Crossroads that doesn't have horns? What if they are like...a nearly extinct species or something? What if they are alone...? What if they are nice??" Sword rambles.
This causes Venomshank to turn his masked gaze towards his charge with a very clear look of confusion and present body language that radiates steady interest.
"You seem rather invested in these cryptid tales as of late, Sword..." Venom muses.
"Though, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. It's because of those very rumors that you have stayed out past your curfew on numerous occasions...and it also has you spending your limited allowance so carelessly on sweets and goodies." Venom continues.
Sword can only sheepishly smile at his mentor from his place on the stairwell in silence.
"I don't mind that you seem to have found yourself a way to entertain yourself, my ward. I once used to find enjoyment in trying to discover mysterious species on my own as well in my youth." Venom lowly chuckles.
"Though, my previous statement does still stand, Sword. Hornless creatures simply can't exist in the Inpherno. It's just not natural to the world." Venom finishes before going back to facing the bookshelf and reading the book he still had in his hands.
"So...if Hornless don't exist...I guess Telamon doesn't exist either? Wasn't he a hornless too?" Sword obliviously asks.
The sudden uttering of the name "Telamon" was enough to cause Venomshank to jump slightly and lose his grip on his book--causing it to clatter to the floor and make Sword flinch.
Sword can only bite his lip in worry as Venom becomes incredibly still and his head only tilts towards Sword's direction, but doesn't fully face him.
"Sword...where did you learn about that name...?" His mentor asks with a tense tone.
"F-From my friend, sir." Sword responds timidly.
The air in the room suddenly became thick from the tense atmosphere that was being radiated from Venomshank, but it wasn't enlisting anger, however.
It was almost like there was a hint of...fear in the air.
A moment passes and Venom stays facing away from his charge...and then he merely bends down and picks up his fallen book that lay at his feet.
"No. There is no such entity that exists by that name." Venomshank passively states.
Sword takes a moment to allow the air in the room to simmer down before replying.
"O-Okay! Noted! I'll just...I'm just gonna go get what I need from my room and be on my way to revisit my friend! S-See you later, mentor!" Sword hurriedly states before running up the flight of stairs to go back to his room.
Venomshank can only stand in the living room and allow a tense sigh to leave his masked lips.
In all honesty, Shank did know of the entities that Sword was inquiring about, but just the sound of HIS name being uttered after such a long time...it was almost jarring.
He hadn't thought about his father in centuries...not since he and his hornless disciples disappeared from the Inpherno for what feels like eons now.
He could barely remember what Telamon looked like in person, but he remembers the sheer power that such a being radiated.
He remembers his titanic hands that cupped around him and his siblings with such large talons, his steely gaze that could crumble even the most bravest of spirits, his large multiple golden wings that could stir up hurricanes with a single flap, his long robe that flowed gracefully like water in the wind, his holy sashes that were written in a language that not even his own children could read, and how his flame-crested halo would rival the brightness of the very sun that warmed their planet.
Telamon was...a formidable figure.
He was a pillar of something greater that not even he nor his siblings could understand, as Telamon built the world of the Inpherno from his place in the skies of the towering heights and the world below bowed and trembled from his sheer will.
And yet...such a large and terrifying entity still felt compassion for his lessers, both demon and...not.
It still made Venomshank shudder from the visuals in the depths of his memory, and he does feel guilty about lying to his charge that trusts him so much, but...yes.
The hornless did exist at one point in the Inpherno, but that all changed when the gaze of of their protector, Telamon, had turned away to finish making the world...and the nights ran red with the blood of his hornless kind.
Venom finds himself remembering the fractured memories of his youth as a younger god and the nights where the moon itself had turned crimson in response to the sheer bloodshed that had ravaged the world when it turned to night.
The rivers turned sanguine from the bodies floating about in them, the soil of many farms tainted from spilled innards, and how the roaring fires from burning settlements darkened the skies with embers and smoke that bellowed up like thunderclouds.
Temples with visages of the moon and stars, built by the Hornless who worshiped Lua and Telamon, were burned to the ground by the envious populace of ancient Inphernals.
Those same Inphernals who coveted the miracles that the Hornless could do and what Telamon could perform with such ease. A vapid envy had consumed them and led to such a ferocious onslaught of so many innocent lives.
He remembers the desperation and pleading from his eldest brother, Firebrand, as he tried to convince his sister, Windforce, to stop hunting the Hornless and to cease with the senseless violence. Yet, despite his eldest sibling's pleas, Windforce continued her hunts, as did the other envious Inphernals who believed that the Inpherno was no place for "the weak".
There were many fights involving the state of the world and the tensions between the two races grew and grew, and the rift between Inphernals and Hornless grew to a point where neither race trusted the other.
Yet, for the Hornless, their fears were justified.
Venomshank can still remember the cries of anguish and fear from the Hornless settlements that were destroyed in a vain effort to claim an ability that Inphernals just...simply can't harness. Lua is just simply too volatile for an Inphernal to wield.
Even now, centuries later, Venom feels a lingering sense of guilt in the fact that he did nothing to stop the destruction of Telamon's people, and the inevitable fallout that came once Telamon returned to see once bustling settlements of Hornless turned into piles of smoldering ash and pools of blood...
He would rather not remember such a visual of Telamon's wrath.
Yet, Venomshank was pulled from his thoughts by Sword who was coming back down the stairs.
"I've got what I've came back for, mentor! I'll be going now, so I will be seeing you later!" The young Inphernal shouts over his shoulders as he opens the front door.
"I see. Well...be careful out there, Sword. You know what time to be back by..." Venom passively answers.
Sword lets out a hum of acknowledgement.
Then, the front door to their shared dwelling was quickly closed as Sword passed through the doorway...leaving his mentor alone with his thoughts.
The deity could only stand alone in his living room as the sounds of his crows, and his trusted bird Sisyphus, fluttered about nearby.
He could only wonder to himself how Sword managed to learn about the Hornless...and HOW he got the name of his father. He thought those records were expunged ages ago...but he supposes he could be wrong.
He just hopes that "friend" of Sword's doesn't get him into any trouble based off of shaky legends...
Why was his ward so adamant about speaking up for a supposed cryptid that doesn't exist...?
