Wanted to share what is happening to me.
My dad died on Friday June 23rd. He had been in hospital in South Africa (where he had lived since 1982) for over 2 weeks, on life support. We, me, Michele Mcdonnell, and my dads family were restricted from speaking to the hospital, they'd been instructed NOT to give us any information regarding his condition by my Dads wife. We do not not why. None of us have ever fallen out with her or voiced any issues with her in the years they've been married. We have little to no information regarding what condition he went into hospital with. We still do not know 100% what the cause of death was. To find out the name of the hospital he was in we had to match the phone number to hospitals in the area on Google. We were given tit bits of information via texts & brief phone calls to other family members, never to us. That woman has NOT contacted me or Michele one single time since my dad became ill or since he died.. NOT ONCE. We were told that he had sepsis then he didn't ? His wife said he had been ill since January but had refused to go to hospital, so she 'treated' him herself. She said she had laid next to him and prayed while he was in agony, as opposed to taking him to hospital whether he liked it or not, like any normal person would have. However he seemed fine when I spoke to him on the phone last in April. He had told me he had pneumonia in January but was feeling better. In my life I've never known him to be ill. He had only turned 70 on 31t December and was a strong and healthy bloke. Always had been. It seems that while on life support my dad had approx 5 surgeries. His wound was left open. We were then told that they'd taken him off the ventilator and moved him out of icu to a high care ward. We were scared but felt more positive. Then he died the next day. My dads wife refused point blank to have a funeral or a service. We, none of us, we're allowed to be there when on Tuesday 27th June ( 2 working days later) at 10 am, she had him cremated. We were told by text message the day before. Apparently, she was the only person present at his cremation. We were then told that she had said "no more questions now, I've said my goodbyes" That's it. She had promised to spilt his ashes and send half to us for my grandparents, who are both almost 100 years old and distraught. Over one month has passed and we are still waiting. Now she is not answering the phone to any of us. Refusing to communicate. Both of her daughters have blocked me and Michele on here. We don't know why. One of them actually sent a message telling us that he was "my dad too". She didn’t meet him until she was about 14 and she has a perfectly 'live' father of her own. I can't believe how cold and insensitive these people are. We have contacted every authority and embassy we can think of to get some information about what actually happened to my dad but we are getting nowhere. Thanks to a helpful member of the genealogist community who lives in SA we found out the name of the undertakers. They were rude and unhelpful. They said my dads wife refuses to give permission for them to forward me any documents like the death certificate. He said she refuses to send the ashes. He said that 'her lawyer is dealing with the matter' . SA home affairs have said we are entitled to apply for a death certificate and they gave me his ID number (like a NI number here. ) but I have to apply in person for it at the local home affairs office. Not possible obviously. Home affairs then told me that they only write 'Natural causes ' on the death certificate anyway and that contacting the undertakers is the only other way to get a copy if I could not apply in person. When I said that I'd tried that already and we needed to know what the cause of death was they simply didn’t reply. They still haven't responded. Several members of the family have tried to speak to the doctor that treated him but they / he refuses to tell us anything at all. When michele and I called the hospital the other day the ward sister and several other people ( I'm assuming were nurses) laughed hysterically down the phone at us when we were asking how our Father had died. Laughing hysterically. I'm not joking or exaggerating. We are now at the point where we don't know what to do. We are stuck in a constant state of numbness. No closure. No goodbye. Nothing. The anger inside me has prevented me from being able to shed a single tear for my dad yet. There is what feels like a physical lump in my throat that won't go away. We are heartbroken. I have held my tongue, I have not said anything I shouldn't have, I've not reacted to her daughters insensitivity and coldness. I haven't put anything on Facebook about this. I have not said what I really should to his wife. I have held it all back. I am holding it all back but it is making me ill. My Narcolepsy is much worse due to the stress. I am filled with rage that I'm holding in and that's not healthy. So I'm telling you all exactly what had happened over the last month because I have to let it out. I'm sorry if my writing this upsets anyone. I don't know what to do I just don't. None of this is okay. None of it is right. He was my Dad for crying out loud, not some random bloke on the other side of the world, not some distant relative, he was my dad and I fucking loved him. We loved him and that woman is destroying us.
Please share. Help me make this post go viral.
Almost 2 years ago, on July 31, 2015, I wrote a prose piece on suicide, titled “The Morning After I Killed Myself.” I posted it on my personal writing blog. The piece spoke from the perspective of a young woman looking back at her life after committing suicide, observing the effects it had on her peers. Within only a few weeks, my piece had been shared over 300,000 times directly on the blogging site, and as of today, it has been shared over 7 million documented times across the Internet.
Unfortunately, ever since I posted it, I have also come across at least 150 cases of it it being plagiarized. 150. And certainly countless more, considering these are only the cases I have been able to find myself. I have lost count of how many times I’ve had to contact websites to ask them to remove the plagiarized versions, how many times I’ve had to file DMCA notices, how many times I’ve had to enlist the support of my readers to bring awareness of the plagiarism to the attention of host sites. I have sent countless emails, filed countless notices, sent in countless reports, etc. On and on.
I’ve had people steal my piece for English class projects, for art projects, get it published on well-known websites under their own names; I even had one girl steal the piece and submit it to the same national art and writing contest I won national medals for when I was in high school. I’ve had people steal my piece and copy its lines and twist its lines and meaning into a highly manipulative and distressing version that blames suicidal individuals for their thoughts and actions, leaving me in distress and sadness at my original message being distorted to such a degree, especially as someone who has personally struggled with suicide. It’s gotten to the point where on one single well-known website alone, The Odyssey, there have been at least 5 different plagiarized versions of my piece published at any given time, with new versions appearing each week.
I remember clearly when one girl used a plagiarized version of my piece for a final art project for her class. This girl was innocent; she had no idea she was using a plagiarized version of my work. I clearly remember her begging me to call her on the phone, a complete stranger, so she could explain, and listening to her break down in tears as she apologized profusely for using a stolen version of my piece when she was not at fault whatsoever.
It is unacceptable, damaging, and devastating to an author when their work is plagiarized, especially to the extent that my piece has been. It is unfair. It is hurtful, it is disappointing, it is inappropriate, and most of all, it belittles the time, effort, and dedication the author put into the work. We need to support and uplift the artists and writers we have left instead of destroying them.
Just yesterday I was contacted by several different individuals telling me that a plagiarized version of my piece is making the rounds on the Internet again. I cannot go a single week each month without being informed of more plagiarism of this one piece that I wrote almost 2 years ago.
Please. If you see plagiarized work floating around, whether it is mine or anyone else’s, report it. Comment on it. File a notice. Speak out about it.
Artists and writers do not exist in a vacuum. They have human feelings; they are human beings. They feel hurt and pain and frustration when you take credit for their ideas and their words and art. Plagiarism takes an enormous toll. It is no exaggeration to say that over the past 2 years that my piece has been stolen, my mental health has taken a hit due to something I spent a great deal of time on being taken away from me over and over and over again.
Please share this, if you have the time. Not for me. But for all the artists and writers whose brilliant and emboldening work you have the privilege, not just the opportunity, but the privilege, to observe, learn from, and immerse yourself in every minute of every day.
Have no dread with dreads
My 15 year old daughter Abbey just watched 'Murdered for being different ' with me. At first I wasn't sure whether she should watch it but she has heard the radio play 'Black Roses ' & wears a S.O.P.H.I.E wristband & understands why. Abbey has never 'followed the crowd ' & is very proud to be 'herself' & a bit different to other people her age, so because of that I thought it was important for her to watch it. Now I'm very glad that I did because when it finished, she wrote this poem. This girl, This is a girl of difference, This is a girl with dreadlocks and piercings, This is a girl with the power to be herself and no one else, This boy, This is a boy of difference, This is a boy with ripped black jeans and dark varnish garnishing his nails, This is a boy with the power to be himself and no one else, These are boys, These are the boys that don't understand different, These are the boys with Nike and Adidas, These are the boys with the trainers that caused the footprints on his and her young bodies, That is a boy, That is a boy who is different, That is a boy who was in love, That is a boy with the strength to stay strong over now physical and mental scars, That is a boy who was hurt for being him That was a girl, That was a girl with dreadlocks and piercings, That was a girl with the power to be herself and no one else, That is the girl that was murdered for being her -Inspired by Sophie Lancaster and Robert Maltby attack in 2007 Written by Abbigail Cate (2017) #sophielancaster #stampoutprejudicehatredintoleranceeverywhere #proudtobedifferent #10years #ripsophielancaster
The Painful Sky.
The Painful Sky. Why are some people luckier than others? My mind wanders as i sit, & wait, watching impatiently as the amber sun collapses, deep into another painful sky - defeated again by winters theft of the day. Hopelessness swallowed by acceptance as at last, unscathed, I contemplate - the void that fills the - left side of my bed. Do we only have one perfect soul mate? Or, are the best adventures yet to come because - nothing is forbidden here - inside this meal for one! Kept sane by cups of Costa coffee & laughing in the face of disasters' twisted plans - misery cannot overpower, this sense of humour &, fun! I have my mother's poetry &, forever memories of violets - I have the kettle, my own front door &, maybe some people are luckier than me but - I'm me & I'll be okay - I'm fine... A little one for my family! 😊
I come from house moves & removal vans, aunts & sister cousins - 6 grans! From mixed up relationships, open wounds, I come from truth - from domestic abuse - the fruits of my never ending ancestors wombs. I come from a place where I was taught to embrace myself & be strong, to fight my corner & to, step back if I'm wrong. I was taught to express what's inside my heart - to have a voice, to have a say & to say it my way. I come from crispy pancakes & mushy peas, from staying out late, from drinking cider out of plastic bottles in parks on 80's council estates, from hanging out with old mates. I come from microwave pizza & shepherds pies - A teenage mother trained to hypnotise! I come from sticky glazed cherries in granny's fruit cakes & the glint of hope in her eyes when in the dark of a Saturday night she'd, tell me the stories of her childhood, her life, the same stories that would carve my path & define the way I write. I come from a branch somewhere near the middle of a growing tree, between the roots buried deep within the earth, from the future bloodlines of this eternal family tree - Im not just me - I'm a million stories begging to be freed - I am somebody's ancestor - waiting be... Glitter & Gravedust
Why don't they keep the clocks on the summertime setting? I don't have the energy to repair the light that's been broken since may - and anyway, deep red skies are more beautiful before the sun starts to fade - leaving the impatient darkness fighting against the sun to simply ignite - forced into the struggle by the headstrong day! Why do so many people miss my point? And no-one seems to hear my words quite right - leaving note books & empty pens boxed away with private stuff - alone with the Cowboys & secret hay bales - boxes of imagination, overfilled yet, forever lost - caked in glitter & gravedust.... I struggled today - drowning in the bottom of an empty coffee cup - surrounded but lost as the whole world watched awaiting my next move - The lonely spectacle, the clown in the crowd &, caked in glitter & gravedust - Today I missed you so much...
