HI! you can call me piero or citrus. i’m a clown afficionado & owner, and this is my blog for everything clown-husbandry-related, including talking about my babies who i would live, kill, and die for.

🤡 here are the clowns i own! 🤡

LITTLE ONE - aka l.o. ! black, white, and grey mini plush/porcelain pierrot mutt. my beloved bucket kid, my ESC (emotional support clown). they’re a shelter rescue! cuddly and very sweet, currently trying to figure out headstands.

ARANCITA AMARA - aka soda slice, sourboy, etc! tropical-patterned mini bat harlequin mix. one of two minis me and my family had before i went to college. his mom was a family friend’s pet that had a surprisingly large litter of chucklets. fond of pranks— especially the classic creme pie routine— and pretending to be grumpy.

CALAMANSILLY - aka silly man or bapy fruit. tropical-patterned mini bat harlequin mix. second of the minis my family and i had. i took silly and sourboy with me when i finally moved out of the big city so l.o. could have some companionship. can and will try to sit on anyone’s head, including his siblings’; is currently trying to teach l.o. and beebo handstands.

🎪 here are some clowns i help care for! 🎪

BEEBO - my foster chucklet! a black/primary striped jingler party clown. has a single-slit bell which is unfortunately the result of poor purebreeding practice. can’t walk too far on their own yet but that hasn’t stopped them from attempting to mimic the tricks of the house minis.

THE TROUPE OF LADIES - aka the tol girls. a group of three well-loved fancy clowns that i care for on behalf of a mostly-housebound neighbor. one sweets british clown (ladyfingers), one decora clown (melody), and one pink blush birthday clown (rosehip). 2/3s diva, all high-maintenance, all worth all the time i spend out of the house for them.

trick question! that is an automaton created by Walter Robotics, and while his movements end up mimicking the pantomime motions of a mime, he is much closer to humans than clowns in order of sentience.

i seriously do not understand where the vicious stereotypes that rodeo clowns are dangerous come from? we had rodeo clowns when i was a kid and they were always wonderful! of course they weren't exactly great with children, but they would always watch out for us and make sure we were safe when we were dealing with the livestock!

i think it’s because they used to be popular For The Aesthetic(tm) a couple years back, so a bunch of people were getting them and not giving them near enough room or enrichment, so the rodeos just tore things up and lashed out for lack of care.

This is Peter, one of our clowns! Most of our clowns are mutts, as people who buy eggs from breeders dislike having an occasional mutt ruin their pure breed clutches. It’s such a sad phenomena, but happens very regularly. We hope Peter will go to a good home! He enjoys juggling and balancing on large rubber balls, and is currently learning how to ride a unicycle. He is five (5) feet and nine (9) inches tall, and very playful and gentle. He’s a little awkward, but perfect around children 💖🤡

This is Booboo, a mutt who likes stilt walking! She has some permanent scarring on her porcelain exoskeleton from injuries her last owner didn’t take care of properly, but that doesn’t limit her in any way. She’s shy, but a real sweetheart and good around older kids, though if you have any kids younger than six, she may not be right for you. she’s only two and a half (2 ½) feet tall off of stilts, and six (6) feet tall on her stilts.

In your opinion, can people ethically keep a clown in an indoor enclosure? I find clowns very sweet and would love to get one for companionship, but I live in a house with a small yard that can’t accommodate a tent. Would a large playroom or something of the like work?

yes and no? i had L.O. (my plush/porcelain pierrot mutt) while i was in the dorms at college, where they had the otherwise unoccupied space under my bunk bed, but i took them everywhere i was allowed to: classes, the grocery store, the clown park, on the bus back towards my hometown, etc.

the only clowns you can really keep in indoor enclosures 100% are the teeniest of teacup clowns (think the ones that won’t get taller than 10in, even when they’re adults). big dollhouses that are clown-proofed can end up enclosures, and as long as they have run of the room they’re in they’ll be okay.

there’s a reason that my mini bats need an outside enclosure despite their arguably small size- 99% of clowns aren’t really meant to be full-time indoor pets.

We hear about the best clowns for first time owners, but which are the worst starter clowns?

If you’re a brand new beginner owner, I’d steer away from full sized porcelains unless you have someone you can really turn to for help. They’re pretty hard to care for because they’re so fragile. Same goes for any full sized glass clown. Almost all clowns are pretty easy starter pets, but full sized glass and porcelain clowns are just a little more difficult!! Of course, if you’re a more experienced clown owner, they’re still incredibly wonderful to have around.
