Harry Bush 1977
Harry Wayne Bush (1926–1994) remains an enigmatic figure in the history of American visual art, largely unrecognized outside niche circles devoted to erotic illustration and a specific aesthetic. Despite his reclusive nature, and the destruction of much of his original oeuvre—a regrettable loss for art historians—Bush’s impact on the landscape of gay visual culture during the mid-20th century is undeniable. His meticulous attention to detail, combined with an uncanny ability to capture idealized masculinity, cemented his place as one of the last prominent artists working within the burgeoning “beefcake” magazine movement.
