Harry Wayne Bush (1926–1994) remains an enigmatic figure in the history of American visual art, largely unrecognized outside niche circles devoted to erotic illustration and a specific aesthetic. Despite his reclusive nature, and the destruction of much of his original oeuvre—a regrettable loss for art historians—Bush’s impact on the landscape of gay visual culture during the mid-20th century is undeniable.
