The Treehouse of Horror Simpsons specials have been a tradition since 1990, debuting during The Simpsons’ second season. Some of the most memorable segments for me are riffs on existing media—A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Shining, etc. However, there are some really outstanding, more obscure sources that make for quite a bit of originality as well. I think it’s this kind of diversity of material that has kept this special a recurring hit for going on 25 years. There’s a certain amount of novelty in seeing Terror at 20,000 feet through Bart Simpson’s eyes, but it kind of pales in comparison with something as out-and-out genius as Homer³.
