Per Noah Wyle’s (Dr. John Carter) instagram, Deezer D, known for playing nurse Malik McGrath passed away. Malik was the first positive example of a male nurse I remember seeing on television, not to mention a black male nurse. Malik’s character wasn’t deeply explored like some of the other nurses but Deezer played the character with his whole heart. What a sad day for the ER community.

People who thinks shows lately are too political clearly didnt pay enough attention either to shows or politics back in the 90s/early 2000s. ER is one of the most political (and liberal) TV shows I’ve ever watched. Some key points:

Gun safety.

Pro choice.

Racial profiling.

HIV.

Sexuality.

Interracial relationships.

Mental health.

Like it wasn’t perfect by any means and it still had problems (it was a little transphobic, at least in the beginning, I don’t remember about later seasons but I’ll find out soon). But it was political without being in your face and preachy *cough*Grey’s*cough*
