I figure that, to some extent, they can empathize with each other, being of similar roles with a lot at stake on either side. Perhaps, by accident or not, they don’t meet on hostile terms at some point. Link is cracking under the stress of everything being placed on him and, well, one thing leads to another and before they know it they’ve discovered that their situations aren’t so different after all.

Maybe Ghirahim takes pity on him, or maybe he just wants to fuck with Link’s head. Perhaps both.
