Top 10 most expensive toll roads and bridges in Britain
Getting from A to B at the smallest cost possible is the aim for all couriers. To make things easier Courier Club, in partnership with Insurance Revolution, has put together this handy guide of the most expensive toll Roads in Britain, so you can plan your route accordingly.
1. London Congestion Charge – £11.50 – By far the most expensive toll in Britain, the Central London Congestion was recently increased again by London Mayor Boris Johnson. The previous charge was £10.00, but was increased in June 2014 following a 10-week public consultation.
2. Severn Bridge – £6.50 – The UK’s most expensive toll outside London, the price of the Severn Crossing and Second Severn Crossing tolls increased again in January 2015. As part of the changes, small and heavy goods vehicles rose by 30p to £13.10, while HGVs and buses now have to pay £19.60, a rise of 40p.
3. M6 Toll Road – £5.50 – The UK’s first toll road. Using the M6 toll would have set you back £2 when it first opened in 2004, but the charge has now increased by 175 per cent to £5.50.
4. Dartford River Crossing – £2.50 – A new payment, ‘The Dart Charge’, was introduced for the Dartford Crossing in November 2014. Users are no longer required to stop at payment barriers, but must instead pay in advance or by midnight the next day. Pay-as-you-go car drivers are charged £2.50, while those with pre-paid accounts are charged £1.67.
5. Durham Peninsula User Charge – £2.00 – Most drivers have to pay to exit the Durham Road User Charge Zone, although there are exemptions. Everyone else must pay £2.00 when exiting the zone between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
6. Mersey Tunnels – £1.70 – The cost of using the Mersey Tunnels was increased to £1.70 in April 2014, the third consecutive rise in three years and it is rumoured that the toll charge will increase again this coming April.
7. Tyne Tunnel – £1.60 – The North East Combined Authority (NECA) has announced that the Tyne Tunnel toll charges will remain the same throughout 2015.
8. Tamar Bridge – £1.50 – Car drivers crossing from Cornwall into Devon via the Tamar Bridge are charged £1.50, while MGW drivers with four or more axles can be charged up to £8.20 for a single vehicle, or £16.40 with a trailer.
9. Humber Bridge – £1.50 – Crossing the Humber Bridge costs car drivers £1.50, while vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonne with four or more axles will be charged £12.00.
10. Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge – £1.30 – Crossing the Tees Transporter Bridge costs £1.60.
