I think our med combo is starting to work? We're having longer stretches of feeling like a person/people rather than feeling heavily depressed. It's like coming up for air after being chained down in the depths of the ocean. We've been enjoying music more and going out to places simply for fun. There's optimism for making plans for the future where there's normally unbearable dread. Individual hobbies and interests are at least kind of a thing. Communication between alters is better. It isn't consistent yet but it's definitely enough to make a huge difference. And we're not manic either. We're eating and sleeping, we're not obsessive over anything. It's nice to feel balanced at least some of the time. It's funny how you forget what normal feels like when you're depressed for a while

Sure! Iâll break it down to the bare basics: 1. The patient must experience at least one or more âpersonality statesâ that are separate from themself. This symptom can be observed by others or reported by the patient.Â
2. The patient must experience some form of amnesia which isnât consistent with ânormal forgettingâ.Â
This includesÂ
blackouts (not remember what another alter was doing as soon as you switch in) or grayouts (not immediately forgetting something after a switch, but more like the memory deteriorates after some amount of time, which could be minutes to days.)
3. these symptoms MUST cause impairment (Forgetting things affects you life negatively in some way, having different alter states affects your life in some way)Â Â
4. These parts or amnesia arenât just fantasy play (for children)
5. The amnesia canât be attributed to things like drinking or drugs
Switching can be either possessive or non-possessive.
Possessive is the switching seen in media, where the alter âtakes overâ the body
Non-possessive switching is like youâre âbecomingâ that alter.Â
For OSDD:
OSDD 1b is a lack of the amnesia symptom
OSDD 1a is a lack of the distinguished parts symptom (in which the alters are more like different versions of the âhostâ)
Partial DID (not yet in the DSM V, but important to mention) is someone who fits the criteria for DID but very rarely ever switches.Â
And, of course, you HAVE to have trauma for DID/OSDD to occur. You HAVE to. Trauma will separate the brain into different parts separated by dissociative barriers, which are also amnesia barriers in everything except OSDD 1b. There is no other way for your brain to force itâs self into different segmented parts other than trauma that happened before about the age of 11.
How ever, trauma doesnât have to be from abuse. It could also be from neglect. It could also be from feeling chronically lonely as a child. It could be from not getting your needs met because you have another co-morbid mental disorder that hasnât been diagnosed. There could have been multiple deaths in the family, or deaths of pets. Maybe you just lived somewhere that wasnât very safe.
Anything that can make your brain go into some sort of survival mode is trauma.
These ALL still make you traumagenic.Â

The question mark over bright hair is because our hair is dark green lol so it's definitely unusual. I was really hoping I would win as a cool Gotcha to the several mental health professionals who have diagnosed/acknowledged us!! I was hoping for whatever prize I'd get for faking this disorder all along!
Edit: I don't know how many alters we have, but we do fit the actual criteria for polyfragmentation- I can make a post on that, if anyone is interested!

Just a reminder to all systems that denial is part of the disorder. It's a covert disorder that is meant to keep you from knowing about your trauma. So having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that you are a system is hard for almost everyone. You are valid and no one can take that away from you. Denial is a coping mechanism and it's hard to stop.

I really wish more creators with a decent following/fanbase would learn more about parasocial relationships and the power imbalance it creates before interacting with fans on a personal level.
To newly discovered systems who are still questioning everything:
(Here's basically everything we wish we knew up front).
- However many alters your system has is fine. You don't have too many. You'll probably realize you have more than you originally thought as time goes on.
- It's really normal to have nonhuman alters.
- It's really normal to have fictives.
- Not every alter needs to fit into a specific obvious role. A lot of alters will probably fill more than one role in your system.
- Being the host doesn't mean you're the "real" person and they're YOUR alters.
- Being an alter doesn't mean you're not the "real" person. Everyone, even the host, is an alter too.
- Persecutors aren't evil and if you treat them like that, they'll just get more problematic.
- However often you switch is normal. If you switch multiple times an hour, great. If you don't switch for weeks on end, also great. That's how your system works and it's fine.
- Age is weird in systems. You can have adult alters who lack the maturity and ability to function like other adults. You can have littles who are able to make complex decisions. Don't assume what an alter is capable of based on their age without actually getting to know them.
- 99% of the time there's no benefit in having a formal diagnosis beyond validating YOU. A trauma and dissociation oriented therapist can help treat your symptoms without making a formal dx. In fact, you might be better off without having that dx on paper.
- You don't owe anyone proof that you're not faking it.
- Thinking that you're faking it is extremely common. If you have to worry about that, you're not faking it. You'd have to make the intentional, conscious decision to fake it.
- Not knowing who you are is common. Blurring together/ passive influence is really common.
- You can split again simply out of necessity; you don't always have to go through a new traumatic event to split.
- CSA isn't the only type of trauma that can result in DID. Any type of ongoing trauma in childhood can cause DID.
- "Is it normal if _____?" Probably. The experience of being/ having a system is incredible subjective and varied.
- There's a good chance your inner world is more or less a vivid daydream. It doesn't have to be like a literal place you "go" when you're not fronting. If it is, cool, but it doesn't have to be.
- Some systems have to intentionally create their inner world to aid in communication. Not everybody just has one automatically.
- At the end of the day, you are one person. In the long run it'll benefit you to remember that and not over-focus on all your differences because that can increase dissociative barriers among other things.
- You are collectively responsible for each other's actions and need to learn to work as a team, as much as you can.
- Yes switching during dreams is a thing.
- In-system relationships between alters is a thing and it's not weird. It's common.
- If you can't track down when and how everyone in your system split that's normal.
- You don't all have to be super distinct to be valid. It's normal for alters to have a lot in common/ to have overlapping traits. Again, you're all part of the same person.
- Alters having a different accent internally but not using it externally is a thing.
- Substances will affect switching and internal communication.
- If you all just use your physical birthday and don't celebrate individually that's fine. If some or all of you celebrate different birthdays/ significant dates that's fine.
- Sharing a romantic/ sexual relationship with a partner is fine and normal, but you also don't have to. However, you should work towards everyone in the system having some kind of positive relationship with your partner because it'll make things way easier.
- You don't owe it to anyone to tell who's fronting.
- If you don't even know who's fronting that's fine. It's normal to not always know.
- If your switches aren't obvious to anyone outside of you and you don't all act super different, that's normal. It's a covert disorder.
- Alters intentionally doing things to give themselves a sense of individuality is normal. Sometimes it's a coping mechanism. If you do things like develop your own handwriting on purpose, that doesn't mean you're faking.
- Dissociative amnesia can happen without switching. Sometimes it's all 100% you and your memory can still be crap.
-not everyone HAS a host. âHostâ often means the most common fronter, whoever identifies with the body, or both, but you donât need to have someone fill that role.
-âyou need extreme trauma to have DIDâ is true but misleading. If you went through something relatively continuous/repetitive/ongoing, that overwhelmed your ability to cope, and you had nobody you could truly rely on to comfort you through this, before the age of 9 or a little younger, so you dissociated to cope, that was enough.
-memory works weirdly and differently in every system so donât stress about how memory is âmeantâ to work. You might forget what you did but remember what other alters did. You probably wonât blackout, but you might. Whatever your thing is itâs probably normal.
-thinking of yourself as one person can feel viscerally wrong, and what âpersonâ means is debatable, so it might help to instead think of yourselves as living one life. You share a life with other alters, hence why youâre responsible for them and vice versa.
-you can tell people and they might not recognise alters still. Itâs normal.
-no matter how different you act other people will still probably not notice. Youâre not faking, itâs just that 99% of people only look at your body/face to tell who you are and donât look much beyond that at your personality.
-even if nobody believes you that doesnât mean youre faking. People hate believing in DID for some reason.
-not remembering you did something is not an excuse for doing it. You are still responsible for your alters actions.
-alters change over time, just like real people! Someone not acting like how they used to doesnât mean youâre faking.
-ârediscoveringâ trauma is normal. Donât force memories, but itâs normal to remember things you didnât use to remember
-you will probably obsess over these things when you find out but eventually it'll feel more "normal" and take up less mental energy to think about
Anyone is capable of this behavior, I suppose, but for some reason I see it a lot more in system spaces:
Setting boundaries is not a personal attack. Sarcasm, snarky behaviors, and aggression towards someone's boundaries is toxic.
I don't care what your intention was or how mad you are, it is never okay to refuse to treat someone correctly or disrespect their autonomy.
Abusers will often try to turn the tables on you and accuse you of the very behavior that they themselves are guilty of. Deny any wrongdoing, attack the accuser, reverse the victim and offender to frame themselves as innocent. If you see this sort of behavior, run.
I have a post coming soon about a famous tiktok user, outlining their patterns of abusive behavior. I see this a lot in self-proclaimed "unhinged" or otherwise "edgy" systems, but this individual has described himself as manipulative and sociopathic (love the ableism). I don't know if they're unaware of the behavior or if they just don't care, but his many fans (many of them underaged) just eat this up. It's disgusting behavior, and I was removed for calling it out.
Once I make this post, please do not witchhunt any users. It will do no good, and interacting with them puts you in harm's way. Please just block them and move on. My intention is not to gain clout or to ruin his image, just to make the community aware of an abuser.
