He made it into the team in fifth year without anyone’s help; in sixth year he scored the same number of goals as McLaggen would have if Hermione hadn’t Confunded him, which means they would have had to break a tie.
He became a prefect because Dumbledore didn’t want to put more stress on Harry, so he wasn’t exactly 1st choice
He was still second choice from a group of five people and Dumbledore’s authority to design Prefects, given that the Heads of the Houses probably know the students better than he does, seems more like a clumsy decision on JKR’s part.
He was the only friend of Harry’s who turned his back on him twice out of misplaced jealousy for things Harry could not control, that’s not being a good friend.
He turned his back on Harry when he was 14 because he thought his best friend had acted behind his back getting into the Tournament, which he saw–like Harry had–as a chance to have fun, achieve greatness and earn money; he immediately realised he had been wrong after the first task. He left Harry when he was 17 after having endured weeks of an evil wizard’s soul feeding him his worst fears, after hearing that his family was in danger and not having any way to make sure they were all right, after Harry told him to leave, and he tried to go back the moment he got away from the influence of the Horcrux.
As for one friend Harry counted on, good job dismissing Hermione, who in the end, has saved his life, gotten him and Ron out of various sticky situations, and been a better friend to him than Ron ever was.
Good job missing all the instances in the books where Harry actually mentions Ron as being the best friend he’s ever had even over Hermione, even though he still loves and appreciates Hermione’s friendship.
Lastly, if Ron is this fabulous friend because he risked his life for someone he’s known for years, then Luna is the greatest friend alive, knowing them for barely a year and already willing to put her life on the line to help Harry save Sirius.
I didn’t realise this was a competition, my bad, but Ron was getting himself in trouble at 11 to help out Harry and Hermione after only knowing them for a couple of months, so.
