Hi! What are your top 10 Upstead moments so far and why?
Oooh!! This is a great question. I worry that if I list my top 10, it will be the typical ones everyone thinks of (because, let’s face it, no one is doing it like Upstead).
So, if you’ll permit me to adjust the ask a bit, here are my top 10 Upstead MICRO- moments. Otherwise known as the small moments within the big ones that, to me, make the scene. These are in no particular order.
1. “I’ve got eyes, Jay” scene. The moment leading up to when say says “Why the neutral?” I think there have been many moments (some appear in this top 10), where Jay is just waiting to ask Hailey something because he just super cares. Others that come to mind- a) when he asks “what’d the feds want?” In 8x03 and of course “why’d you propose?” In 9x01. You could feel his restless energy build up to these asks.
2. “Thing that Works” scene. The small smile and look down that Jay gives when he says “what thing?” gets me every time. He was already so in deep for her.
3. “The 8x03 bar” scene. The tremble in Jay’s voice when he says “you’d probably be really good at it” crushes me. He asked about the job, the money…and at that moment he felt like he could not compete. He never thought he would be THE variable, which makes what she says later in the scene all the sweeter.
4. “The proposal part 1”. The catch breath Hailey takes before she says “I love you…more than anything.” You can hear the desperation in her tone when she is trying to convince him. She was so scared he was going to say no.
5. “The proposal part 1”. The look down Hailey gives when she says “right” after he says they should get to the hospital, and the wobble in her voice when she says “I’m gonna take a quick shower, ok?” You can feel how dejected she is and how she is trying so hard not to break down right there.
6. “The proposal part 2” Jay was on a mission and he barely let her take a sip of her whisky before he asked her why she proposed. He wanted to be SO sure it was for the right reasons. The look down he gives when she says she doesn’t know if she did it because of Kim crushes me. Then, we know what comes after, but that micro moment hurt. He thought it was confirmation that she was not sure about them. Which makes her next words mean so much.
7. “Interrogation room” When Hailey says “No one controls me. Not him, and not you”, Jay gets an admiring look on his face for a split second and I love it. Also, Hailey’s look right when he says he doesn’t know what to do either is so painful.
8. “Back at Home” scene when Jay comes home after North. The way Hailey swallows and looks down when he said the plan worked. You can see a million emotions. Guilt Jay had to do this at all. Worry that she made him compromise his decency, overwhelm that he would do this FOR HER. And the way he rushed to sit next to her….because he knew that is what she was feeling.
9. “North Interrogation”. The way Hailey says “what?” After North talks about her father. So much charged in one word and look.
10. “THE sex scene”. The way in the last few seconds they mirror each other perfectly as they cling to each other. The position of their arms is the same. The feelings.
Bonus: In the wedding scene when he is signing the marriage certificate and she side glances at him with love and wonder like she has to pinch herself that this is really happening and she can start a new and better chapter with the love of her life.
