I was watching The Pitt ep 12, and discovered that if you're in a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) like a mass shooting, you'll be triaged based on mental clarity, which is based on:
Ability to speak clearly with your mouth parts
Can you move or walk?
Can you follow instructions?
Do you seem alert, attentive, "in there" (to someone who has 0 disability or psychological training).
That means if you're autistic or disabled, you REALLY NEED a medical bracelet. If you're going to potentially dangerous activies like protests, you may want to write this information on a part of your skin visible outside your clothes, like your chest or arm.
Information should say:
SELECTIVE MUTISM / NON-VERBAL UNDER STRESS / DO NOT ASSUME UNCONSCIOUSNESS
Or:
COMMUNICATES NONVERBALLY / USES PHONE OR WRITTEN METHODS / DO NOT WITHHOLD TREATMENT
And ideally:
Emergency contact info
Medication or allergy info
“Presume capacity unless unconscious.”
It’s horrible that it has to be this way, but yes—medical systems are still designed around what’s easiest for them to process, not what’s most inclusive. And in an MCI, shortcuts become policy.
