a likely response , though he seemingly took the information better than she had expected him to . which allowed the woman a slight feeling of relief . “ it is strange , i know . i only need you to know that i would not lie to you . everything i tell you is the truth . “ her brown eyes have softened , even further than before . diana’s gaze filled with warmth , comforted in the stillness of their surroundings .

“ above average . “ she corrects , her smile brilliant . “ there is a story about that . i would only learn the true reasoning behind it many years ago . nativity . her cheeks display a pink tint , it had been hilarious to look back on the encounter with a more detailed understanding of the situation . his touch is welcomed , allowing one of her hands to tap against his knuckles . “ someday , i will share that with you . when the time is right . “

he doesn’t seem to have much of a choice but to trust the woman’s word. somehow, she simultaneously feels like a complete stranger and the most familiar presence in the world, and it’s muddling his brain. steve decides to ignore his wandering thoughts and turn his full attention to the woman sitting beside him. even her company grounds him. warms him. he feels at peace, at home. everything feels right somehow, and he’s growing increasingly frustrated that he can’t remember their past together. maybe it hurts even more to know and not remember than it does to not remember at all.

“above average?” he can’t help but smirk at the innuendo, immediately taking notice of the blush on diana’s cheeks. it’s adorable, and he reaches out without thinking, grabbing hold of one of her hands to clasp in his own. it feels so familiar somehow, like the missing puzzle piece he never noticed was suddenly being returned to its rightful place again. “i trust you. i’ll wait until you think it’s the right time,” he nods, glancing down at their hands and then up at her lips. he catches himself soon enough and looks back up at her eyes, his expression softened. “does this mean you aren’t kicking me out anytime soon?” steve has no idea what kind of plans she has in store for them, but he’s certain the last thing he wants to do is return to his own apartment, alone and contemplating everything he thought he once knew.

it felt easier on the island to explain herself . who she was . what she was . without the history . but diana persisted , steve deserved to know the answers to these questions if he felt ready to truly hear them . “ my name is diana . i’m from themyscira . i was sculpted from clay by my mother . my father is zeus . “ she takes a moment , aware that this information had taken time to settle – even before his memory was wiped .

she maintains a close proximity to the man , almost paranoid he would flee . “ you found the island , i saved you and brought you to land . when we sailed to this –world , the man-made world , we arrived in england . – “ another pause , her dark eyes steady . “ i am not human . not in the way that you are . “ considering the sculpted of clay , that seemed almost obivious . “ to hide my identity , we used the name diana prince . i am diana , princess of themyscira . “

a normal person would probably burst into laughter upon being told by a stranger that they were hand-built from clay, but steve was already trying to process even stranger things, especially his own death, which he still had a hard time comprehending. instead, he just gives the woman a curious look, one eyebrow raised as he meets her gaze. “zeus? as in.. the greek god?” now he was supposed to accept that greek mythology was real, too, and it was beginning to feel somewhat difficult to keep up. “how is any of this possible? i thought — we’re taught that it’s all make believe, but you’re telling me it’s real?”

the hand that was caressing her cheek had moved down to rest on her knee, though he hesitated before placing it fully in case she showed any sign of discomfort. on the contrary, she seemed to enjoy his touch, and it relaxed him to know that his impulses weren’t completely unfounded. they truly did love each other, even if he didn’t remember it. “it’s nice to meet you, diana, princess of themyscira. i’m steve, your average american soldier,” he said with a dry chuckle. it was ridiculous, how this demi-goddess showed any interest in him, someone who wasn’t special at all. someone so ordinary.

her breathing has hitched , chin resting in the man’s warm palm . his dreams struck a chord , one that diana had glossed over as best as she possibly could . to speak of the wars was enough , it’s description in detail was better left unsaid . or so she had believed . “ a memory . “ her response is plain , sparing most of it . “ i was wearing my armor . “ diana insists , though it’s very easy to remember the similar response held as she had charged forward .

her hand moves to ghost over his , allowing it to press harder against her cheek . “ these are the dreams you spoke of ? yes ? those are memories . “ it pained her that his mind was reliving it , the worst parts , at that . of war . the pain it brought . the senselessness of it all . “ you learned very quickly not to underestimate me . “

he cradles her face in his hand, looking at her like some sort of mystical creature. to him, she was. nothing about her made any sense, and she was obviously keeping information from him. her responses were always brief, short. to the point. steve wanted more. she was unreadable, though sometimes the expressions on her face revealed her true feelings.

“how?” he demands, though his voice is soft. gentle. warm. the look of sheer panic on her face as he woke up still lingered in his mind, and he never wanted to make her feel that way again. “how did you do that?” he remembers how it felt, the fear of losing her closing his throat up, making him feel as though he couldn’t breathe. she was so certain, so determined that she would be fine, and he couldn’t understand how until he saw for himself. “who are you?” he whispers, wanting to unfold every layer of her until all that’s left is diana, a woman, the woman he knew he loved. it was going to take time, he knew, for them to open up to each other, but steve couldn’t bear it anymore. he needed answers.

he had jolted . diana was entirely positive . the light of the morning had barely cast it’s glow over the apartment , he had spent the night . an offer of the couch , which seemed as respectful and in line with everything steve trevor stood for . she had attempted to sleep in her bed , she had . though an hour o tossing and turning had led diana to trailing back out into the living area . a blanket wrapped around her and a pillow , taking a spot just a few steps shy of the couch .

she had gotten a few hours , the most as compared to the last few weeks . it was more comfortable having steve there , even if it was not the same as it was . his jolting had caused the woman to sit upright , the blankets still wrapped around legs as she shakes him awake . a panic having ensued as he doesn’t stir , forcing her voice to crack . “ steve – STEVE .” @cptntrevors

the offer to spend the night was one he easily accepted, though he was still going to be gentlemanly about it. the couch was comfortable enough, and he had no great difficulty falling asleep. there were the usual late night thoughts that kept him awake for longer than he would’ve liked to, but he eventually found himself in a deep sleep, one that felt better than any other he’d had in the past few weeks.

the last thing he sees is diana walking alone into a storm of bullets as he stays behind and watches in horror and amazement. he’d tried to reach out for her and stop her, but she was just as stubborn as he was. then he’s suddenly pulled back into her apartment, and he sits upright immediately, chest rising and falling as he takes deep breaths, trying to control his unsteady breathing. wordlessly, he hesitantly reaches out for her and cradles her face, admiring the sight of her for a moment. she was real, she was here. “diana,” he breathes out, not taking his gaze off of her. “i thought you -- i saw you walking into the line of sight. there were hundreds of bullets . . .” he lets out a sigh of relief once he realizes that it was, in fact, a dream. “was that a dream.. or a memory?”

it was a surprising . though , for diana , this only seemed to prove that the connection held between the pair had been just as deep for him as it was for her . it was reassuring . that something so real – so pure had withstood so much . that even steve , in the current state , was still as willing . a hand has broken the respective barrier , her fingers running over his jawline , trailing . there is a slight hum to her tone as her fingers move slowly . their touch had always been a welcome bond between the pair , an unspoken devotion . “ i am not the one to be worried about . you’re still my steve . “

the glowing rope . “ the lasso of truth . “ she corrects , breaking their touch as she stands . diana’s description of the item continues even as she vanishes into another room of her apartment , returning with the long golden lasso . “ it allows the truth to be heard , one is not allowed .. or able to lie when holding it . or being held by it . “

he falls silent when her fingers trace along his skin, the immediate comfort it provides bringing a gentle smile to his lips. it’s way too soon to kiss her, he knows that logically, but something within him was toying with the idea anyway. it was his body talking again, because somehow it remembered their connection even if the rest of him didn’t. “i hope so. i hope i can be.” the steve she knew was clearly long gone, and now all that remained was a version of him that seemed to have been placed in the wrong time. he was desperate to figure out how and why.

the lasso of truth doesn’t ring a bell, so he waits patiently for her to retrieve it. what he’s met with a glowing rope that resembles the one from his dreams, but still looks like something that shouldn’t logically exist. “it makes you tell the truth?” he asks, reaching out to touch it, only for his hand to recoil as soon as he realizes it was radiating heat. “how does it work? is it magic?”

there’s a jolt that runs through her , the connection of his lips against the skin of her knuckles . it’s thoughtful , and intimate . a line that diana was steady trying to walk , curious as to his own interpretation . he speaks of dreams and she is almost painfully aware of what many of them way entail , the contents having been reminisced over and over . had she misheard him ? “ you’re willing to relearn it ? “ her expression allows the show of her words to leak through , it was a hesitance to grasp what he meant . shielding herself from any form of disappointment .

“ i don’t know . we’ll find out though , i can promise you that . “ it was already her plan to enlist the help of her friends . there was not a single doubt that the likes of kal-el and bruce could get to the very base of all of this . it had been her intention to call them weeks ago , upon even bumping into steve . it was put off . diana needed time , though perhaps this was a calling for her to return their messages . with the watch back in her hand , diana runs a fingertip over the metal casing . “ we’ll have a better understanding of it . soon . “

it was only then that steve realized he hadn’t been properly getting his point across. diana’s surprise at his comment fills him with a nervousness that hadn’t been there before. what if she didn’t want that with him? he wasn’t her steve. “i mean — only if you want me to.” there’s a vulnerability in his tone and expression as he looks up into her eyes and gives a gentle shrug. “i understand if you . . . aren’t interested.”

he nods once, convinced by her expression alone that she’s being sincere with him. she seemed to have enough resources and information to begin a proper investigation of sorts. steve wonders briefly about the group of friends she’d mentioned working with. “in my dreams, i keep seeing you with what looks like a glowing rope. i saw you use it on me once. what does it do?”

“ i do . still . “ diana admits , though there is no doubting the feeling of heat rising in her cheeks . it shouldn’t have felt strange , to admit this . but even now , this was the first time she had , outloud to him . having been unable to do so before he died . “ you’re both the same . you’re still the same person , just with different context. “ this was stated proudly , as she had successfully made her mind on the matter . he was still steve . he was still her steve . “ i know that the love you feel for me is different from that , it’s okay . “

the watch had stopped ticking years prior , diana had refused any form of refurbishment for it . paranoid that some damage would be done . it was best to leave it . sitting and silent . “ that before your mission in turkey , your dad had given it to you . just before the war . “ brown eyes gaze from the small watch and back to steve , a softened smile across her lips . “ he would have been very proud of you . “

the blush on diana’s cheeks quickly becomes the most beautiful thing steve has ever seen, and he can’t help it when he laces their fingers together and brings them to his lips, a delicate kiss pressed against the back of her hand. “i may not be the steve you remember, or the steve you want, but i’m still me. it’s like . . . things are coming back to me, but only through dreams.” he remembers being on some island with her, but there’s no recollection of how or why he went there. “diana, what i’m trying to say is that even though i can’t remember my love for you, i’m willing to relearn it.” he inwardly cringes almost immediately afterwards, the fear that he’s coming on too strong causing him to involuntarily pull back slightly from her.

“just before the war,” he repeats after her, carefully studying the watch to make sure that it was identical to his own, which he was certain it was. “my dad gave me mine just before i left for training, when i first enlisted. how is this possible?” he gently hands it back to her, not wanting to cause any damage to what she has clearly been trying to preserve as carefully as possible. “are my memories even real?”

the warmth of his hands have left her comforted , although she struggled still . his lack of memories felt like a missing piece , but this was a start . steve trevor was alive , breathing and hearing her out . that was all that seemed to matter to the woman at this point . “ of course i did . my first and only love . and it was real . “ she offers his hand a squeeze , the flicker of a smile present . difficult , but a start . it was more than one could hope for . though , for diana , still plagued with present naivety , has not considered this of romantic intent . allowing him to get to know her – as a friend . accepting the painful notion that he did not love her in the way that she desired . that it was not enough of the body if the mind did not agree . “ i would like that . “

a nod of dark hair , watching cautiously . diana seldom brought the watch out of it’s bag , fragility in it’s age left her very careful with it . “ yes . it’s my most treasured possession . our pictures , too . etta helped me frame the newspaper clippings , we would save everything .” her eyebrows lower , furrowing in confusion . “ you do ? “ among steve basically rising from the dead , diana couldn’t understand the placement of a replica . or , who would have given it to him .

her smile and the squeeze of her hand lets steve believe that he’s gotten his point across. he wants to get to know her, but he also wants to get to know them. what they’d been to each other, what they liked, what they had done together. whatever love he once held for her seemed to remain inside of him without his permission, but even now, gazing at this near stranger, he can’t help but feel completely content by her side. “do you still? love me, i mean. or the other version of me, i guess. you love him, right?” it’s unprompted, but steve has grown curious, and he needs a definitive answer before he begins trying to navigate whatever relationship they seemed to be forming.

his father had given him the watch when he left for basic training, which seemed like a lifetime ago. it practically was. steve has held onto it for nearly half his life, and it’s his most prized possession as well. “yeah, it was my dad’s. he died when i was on active duty a few years back.” at least, that’s what he remembers. he’s already started questioning everything, even his existence, so who knows what happened? it’s insane and impossible and ridiculous and steve’s internally freaking out about it, yes, but not with diana beside him. “where did i — he? — tell you he got the other one?”

her composure is threatened , leaving diana to attempt any form of maintenance on it . it was natural , and even though he was somehow taking a seat with her , she had grieved him . for decades . “ no . i had no need for it . “ her statement is matter-of-fact , a confirmation . “ i had no desire to move on which can be difficult for some to understand . when you have something real , even for a short amount of time , that is enough . you hold onto it . “

his show of comfort has seemed to make the tears worse , now arriving in multiples along her cheeks . diana leans back , using the backs of her hands to clear away any further sign of it . “ it would have been . it would . you needed to do it , for others to have that life . it was noble , i understand why it had to be done . “

now , with her hands resting in her lap – her tea abandoned on the table now going cold , diana allows a shaky breath . if she had already dumped this mess of information on him , it was only fair to show the final object . her walk to her office is brisk , and it ends with her laying the watch in his palm . “ this was your father’s . you placed it into my hand while you said goodbye . i keep it in my office during the day , and in my room at night . “

while one part of steve is delighted to hear that diana isn’t seeing anyone else, another part of him can’t help but feel a little guilty. that meant this woman had gone over a century alone, never opening her heart again, never moving past their romance. it’s upsetting to know that she’s remained stuck on him for so long. even though he hardly knows her, he’s certain that his other self would want her to be happy. “you loved me that much?” he asks, voice soft but genuine. “i’m sorry you were alone for so long, diana. but i . . .” he looks down at their hands, then back up at her teary eyes. “however long i’m here, i want to spend it with you. getting to know you. again.”

while she speaks like someone who has comes to terms with his apparent death, steve can tell by her memorabilia that she hasn’t. when she disappears for a few moments, he takes the time to observe the newspaper clippings more fully. his fingertips run across the glass frame as he reads the small print that declare him a war hero, his head shaking in amazement. in a matter of weeks, this woman appeared in his life and turned it upside down.

then she’s handing him something, and he looks down with confusion at the watch, though the confusion quickly transforms into shock. he knows this watch. “i gave this to you?” he repeats in astonishment, turning the watch over in his hands to observe it. surely enough, it’s a replica of the one he has stashed in his bedside table, but it’s much older. “you’ve kept it all this time.” it’s an observation rather than a question. “i have one, too. in my own apartment.”

“ as if it was just another day . you jumped in , you saved the world . “ diana confirms , she remembered that final conversation well . his watch sitting in her desk , here , in the apartment . his words had taken moments to sink in to her then , moments that were whisked away too soon .

his action has eased her , having prepared herself for a pull away . there were borders , ones that diana was unsure on when or how to properly cross them . she gives his hand a squeeze , though his words have left her trying to piece together how to properly word the following .

“ we were as happy as we could be . in those circumstances . we didn’t get to be with each other very long . “ her eyes had started to water , long dark lashes dampened as she allows her gaze to rest ahead . “ we didn’t have enough time . you would tell me what life was like when there was no war . of reading newspapers . dancing . i lived after the war , but it just was not the same . “ all that he had spoken about , diana had pictured with him . the marriage . the babies . the ease of life in all of it’s normalcy . his loss had only pushed her further into work , to assist with the absence of this desire .

the more he learned about his previous self, the more steve was impressed with the man diana had fallen in love with. he just jumped in, no hesitation, and saved the world? but there’s also the fact that in her details, diana confessed that life was never the same after their short-lived romance, and that worries him. “did you ever.. see anyone else?” his lips purse momentarily after he asks, a little ashamed of himself for needing to know whether she had moved on.

as soon as she begins to tear up, steve is involuntarily leaning in, needing to be closer to her, to comfort her, at the first sign of emotion. he can’t help it, and the ease with which he does it surprises him. just how attached to this woman is he? “i’m sorry that we didn’t get to have that life together. i’m sure it would’ve been a great one.” he reaches out, hands shaking a little, and delicately wipes a tear away before it has the chance to fall.

she doesn’t know when to stop . there doesn’t seem to be a perfect way to end the discussion . even as his hands begin to shake , diana pleading with herself to figure out some way to alleviate it . he wanted answers , he had asked for answers . she was trying to give them , as best as she could , as discrete as she could . the details were painful , even more so to uncover . diana had allowed herself to relive the happy moments , the realty of it was upsetting enough .

“ you saved the world . you died in a plane explosion , destroying the weapons that would be used for violence against innocent people . we won , because of you . “ which , is exactly how diana felt . in fact , she knew his sacrifice was what allowed her to find the strength to do what she needed to . it was all she could cling to , softening the blow of losing him .

there’s a trace of a smile , the curve of her lips as she reaches out . placing a hand on his , diana offers a squeeze , shaking his hand slightly . “ i believe we’re on the same page . “ the raven-haired woman admits , allowing a gentle sigh to escape her . “ it’s thefeeling , isn’t it ? “

a bizarre feeling comes with learning that your death was a heroic one, but learning that your death saved the world? it’s too much information at once, and he isn’t sure how to process it. steve’s head has already started to feel like it’s pounding, but something about diana’s presence nonetheless brings him a sense of comfort. it’s a relief to know that he isn’t going through it alone, at least.

after a long pause, he continues. “okay, so i just casually saved the world by blowing up a plane?” he chuckles at that, partially because it does sound like something he would do. steve was an honest and loyal man, and if given the option of saving the world and dying or not saving the world, he would choose to die every time. it was just in his nature to be that way.

the first touch of contact. their hands. her hand feels soft against his, and he instinctively takes hers in his to lace their fingers together. it’s a simple act that immediately relaxes him. “exactly. it’s like . . my body knows you even if my mind doesn’t.” as perplexed as he is by the entire situation, there’s one thing steve has never been more certain of in his life: that he loves diana prince with all his heart. “what were we like back then? were we happy?”

our friends . etta is missing from this , she took care of you in more ways than she was given credit for . “ diana states , her tone solemn . “ etta and i kept in touch for years after , she passed away about forty years ago now . old age , and peaceful . the boys have all since passed away as well . charlie not long after the war , chief was living in russia – his was old age as well . sameer died in the 40′s. “ all of these , seemed to be grim reminders . that the chapter of that life was closed , pages turned with the death of each member .

diana holds her tongue , she was trying to be delicate . she was . the topics asked just seemed to tear away at the attempts made , it was raw , still . even so many years later . “ i do not know how it is possible . you died . as far as i had known , you have been dead since the very last time i spoke to you . you died minutes later . i do not know how you are here . “ her persistence is pleading honesty .

a balancing act , with diana taking the leap . although for him it was confusion , understandably so , she knew why it was difficult . it was difficult to shake because it was real . etta had confirmed it to her , as much as steve’s very last words to her had . “ we were in love . completely . if your dreams are anything like mine , i think you already know that . “

etta. another name that steve has no recollection of, but he simply sits back and listens to diana as she explains the life he doesn’t know. the rational part of him knows it’s crazy, but he can’t help but believe every word she speaks. something about her draws him in and convinces him to trust her, and before he knows it, steve is leaning in closer, desperate for every little detail she could give him. his friends, all dead, and he has no idea who they were.

he had died, and somehow he was alive again, existing over a century later, living a completely different life. he looks down at his hands, now shaking in his lap, and lets out a deep breath. his dreams were so vivid that he always woke up convinced they hadn’t been a dream at all. it felt real, all of these dreams, these memories, and she was in every single one of them. diana, this mysterious woman who pulled him in like a siren. as confused and disoriented as he is, steve can’t imagine leaving her now. he never wants to leave her, he realizes, completely stunned.

the one question that demands to be asked sits on his tongue until she’s finished speaking. he looks up at her briefly, then back down to the pictures and medals that apparently belonged to him. “how did i die?” there’s a frown on his face as he tries to process his thoughts, but it seems impossible now.

but then he’s pulled from his thoughts with a start, gaze piercing hers as their eyes meet. “i think i’m still in love with you, and i don’t know you.”

the response was truly what diana had been hoping to avoid . in fact , her avoidance of him entirely was put in place so that this conversation would not have to happen , for his own good . and in a way , her own good . “ i answered your questions. “ the woman responds , her tone steady although it was difficult to push down the arising feelings in her stomach . upset , outrage, amongst many others .

with a sharp exhale , and a confusion over whether or not she was doing the right thing , diana has placed her cup down onto a coaster , in a few swift movements , she has taken two frames from the wall . both containing stories of captain steve trevor and his service . a few medals awarded after his death . although these contained photographs of him, it was not the picture she desired .

this one was removed from her bedroom , and she returned with the three items in tow , placing them one by one onto the glass table . the last photograph , one of her most treasured possessions . is showcased on a glass plate , clearly showing it’s age . “ 1918 . “ her nail taps against it . “ charlie . sameer , chief . you . me . “ diana has now returned to her seat , looking back towards steve . her brown eyes focus on him alone , the concern completely evident within them . “ if i was trying to be funny , you would know . i have become very smart with jokes . the flash has told me himself .”

her response is simply not satisfactory, but before steve can demand any more from her, she’s walking around and grabbing frames from the walls. the contents are all still unfamiliar, but his frustration quickly turns into utter confusion as soon as he reads his own name on the old newspaper clippings. the photographs confuse him even more — sure enough, there he is, standing beside diana, who is coincidentally wearing the costume he’s seen in his dreams.

there’s no doubt in his mind that those pictures are of himself, but he doesn’t recognize any of the other men in the photograph. time travel wasn’t real, but here he was, over a century later looking not much older than he does in the photograph. “who are they?” he demands, pointing to the other men in the picture.

“how? how is any of this possible? why can’t you give me an explanation?” he sounds angry, but his anger is not directed at her. it’s the world he’s angry with. if it was true, if he had somehow fought in the first world war alongside her, they must have time traveled together. had science really advanced that much in ten years? “i can’t escape you, diana. you’re all i think about. you’re in each of my dreams. what is happening to me?” he’s desperate now, arms thrown in the air in frustration as he straightens up his posture. “who am i?”

it felt strange , to have steve in her apartment . if anything , it felt like a clash of two lives , one having been lived and the other currently living . like a timeline meshing together . it was difficult to grasp the contrast of it , even as diana glanced towards him, she struggled to truly understand how substantial this was. the glance, settled a little too long, unable to break away from him.

it seemed to feel like had she blinked , he would dissolve away . though as the minutes blended together , this didn’t seem to be the case , allowing diana to be more confident and .. more confused . “ politician ? no , no . a group of my friends and i help out in the community . “ that was probably the best way to put the justice league and their mission .

the question is , as expected , a loaded one . it’s with this that diana excuses herself , drawn to the whistling kettle and returns with tea and a small sugar dish . “ my name is diana . and yes , i do have dreams . “ she remains standing , pouring the boiled water into the porcelain tea cup . “ my dreams are of my own memories , just as your dreams are . “ she pauses , allowing this to sink , now sitting back with a hot mug in her hand . “ that is what they are . memories . my name is diana . and you are captain steven trevor . air service officer , a british spy during the first world war . we worked .. very closely together for some time .“

a group of people people known for helping out the community doesn’t ring a bell, but steve has been across the world for the last decade of his life, so he chalks it up to simply not knowing much about the state of new york society. it makes sense, though, given diana’s above average height and the clearly defined muscles in her arms. in his dreams, steve sees her in a suit of some kind, usually with a shield, and he wonders for a moment whether the suit is even real, or merely a figment of his imagination.

his mind’s fascination with her tug at his heart, and as she pours herself a cup of tea, he can’t help but observe her every movement. she seems irrationally calm around him given the fact that he had essentially stalked her back to her apartment. he doesn’t bother to pour himself any tea, his attention drawn completely to the woman sitting near him, and when she finally answers his questions, he feels a wave of nausea hit him all at once.

they couldn’t be memories. steve has his memories, and he would remember being with someone like diana. it’s true, he is captain steve trevor, but he lets out a humorless laugh when she includes the detail of his service being during the first world war. no, if he had been alive during the war, he’d be over a hundred years old. it’s impossible.

“very funny.” though there’s no flash of humor in his expression, and he’s starting to feel an uncomfortable and hot sensation all over his body. she’s mocking him, that much he’s certain of. “i served in the air force until four months ago, and i’m pretty sure i’m not over a hundred years old.” but her expression reveals to him that she’s trying to put on a serious face, and he wonders how much of it she believes to be true. it would be a strange coincidence for him to resemble another captain steve trevor from the previous century, but weirder things have happened.

“listen, i hate to be the one to break it to you, but i’m having dreams, not memories. you’re honestly telling me we’re over a century old?” he motions between them, two people not even yet middle-aged, and shakes his head incredulously. “i don’t know if this is some kind of joke, but it’s not funny.”

the exhaustion on his face is evident , with diana’s glance full of sympathy as the wearisome features of the man’s face become even more pronounced in the harsh lighting of the apartment corridor . diana was surprised to see him , having not expected him at all . certainly not after their last meeting , where she had truly realized that steve trevor’s memories of her were dissolved with time . or death , or both .

now , a invitation from a man who had just followed her off the street , as good natured as it could possibly be , would normally be refused , or redirected . a random man . in that circumstance . though , memories or not , steve was still steve . a safe harbor in nearly any way the woman would picture it . that soft spot , that love remained and had grown even in their time apart .

“ yes , you can . “ diana has stepped back , pulling the door even further open . the apartment is fairly bare , essential furniture but appeared much like a default hotel room . cold and unlived in . framed newspaper clippings , photographs and medals line the walls . “ i’ll boil some water . have a seat . “with a kettle placed on the stove , diana has returned to the living room area , finding a spot on the loveseat across from him . “ you need to talkwith me ? “

a wave of relief washes through steve as soon as he’s invited into the apartment. he quickly brushes past diana and is immediately overwhelmed with the scent of her. it’s completely incomprehensible ; there’s no reason he should feel comforted by the smell of her, but he finds himself inhaling deeply once he’s settled on the loveseat. the apartment isn’t what he expected it to be by any means. it hardly even looks lived in, and compared to his own, it’s spotless, more like a display apartment than a real one.

it hits him once he looks around to observe his surroundings that this woman is special. there are medals he doesn’t recognize, as well as newspaper clippings that appear a century old, hanging on the walls. diana is a mystery to him, and it makes steve even more confused that this woman has invaded every one of his senses. “are you a politician of some kind?” the question is genuine as he waits for her to put the kettle on. he’s still buzzing with caffeine from his cafe visit, but he doesn’t think it’s physically possible to say no to her.

he finally tears his eyes aware from the barren apartment and finds himself struggling to choose his words. he can’t just outright tell her he’s dreaming about her, that images of her, of them, flash across his mind each night. jaw clenches as he looks up from his lap to meet her gaze. “who are you?” he hates how uncertain his voice sounds when he says it, so he clears his throat and tries again. “i mean, i feel like . . . part of me knows you, and i don’t know how or why. have you been having . . . dreams?”

a second phone call , the vibration in her pocket alerting her that the justice league was attempting to contact her again . diana had been out of commission for the past few weeks , though ti didn’t seem to change the need for contact . bruce and arthur , specifically , didn’t seem to understand the need for some time off . allowing it to go directly to voicemail, diana holds the warm paper cup of hot chocolate tightly, rounding another street corner .

as much as it pained her , she was well-aware she wouldn’t be much help at the very moment . that a wandering mind and an aching heart did not deem her fit for anything they were prepared to throw at her . if it was an emergency , they would come find her . that she knew , and took comfort in . instead , she had found a sense of solace in the walls of her downtown apartment . a love of new shows on the television , new girl , at the moment .

the door having shut behind her , diana had shrugged out of her coat , only clearing it past her elbows when she heard the knock . could it have been an emergency ? maybe she should have picked up . fully removing the coat , she returns to the door , turning the handle . her surprise , fully prepared to see a grumpy bat or an overenthusiastic arthur . to her surprise , it was steve . “ oh . i wasn’t expecting to see you . “

it was one thing to see this woman in his dreams, but it was another to be confronted with her again, face-to-face. whatever speech he had rehearsed in his head was forgotten at the sight of her. she looked shocked, and for a moment steve regretted following her at all. maybe it was better to let his unconscious obsession with this woman run its course. maybe he should just leave her alone, and try to go back to living the life he was still trying to get used to.

no. he needs to stand firm, to demand some sort of explanation from diana. she was a ghost, haunting him, filling him with a feeling that he couldn’t comprehend. he’s certain he looks worse for wear. the bags under his eyes draw attention to his lack of sleep, and his hair is slightly tousled. he can’t remember the last time he got a good night of sleep, and the constant reappearance of this woman, of diana, in his psyche was only making things worse. his mind wanted to tell him something, that much was obvious, and he was desperate to figure out what that message was.

taking a deep breath, steve shoves his hands inside his jacket pockets and looks up at the woman standing before him. “i’m sorry for following you,” he blurts, not wanting her to think he was some sort of stalker. “i just need — i need — to talk to you.” his voice is breathy, his lungs still trying to recover from running after her across the city. “please. can i come in?” he asks, briefly glancing over her shoulder into her apartment.

it was beginning to feel like diana prince had cast some kind of spell on steve. ever since their encounter several weeks ago, he hadn’t been able to shake the image of her from his mind. she was there in every one of his dreams. in many of them, he noticed, they almost appeared to be a couple ; they kissed, hugged, held hands, and he even called her an angel. dreaming about a stranger like that made him uncomfortable, but she simply wouldn’t leave his mind, and he didn’t understand why.

it was mid-afternoon when he found himself walking downtown after a meeting. he was beginning to feel restless, so he figured it was a good idea to stop somewhere and grab coffee. he turned the corner that led to his favorite coffee shop, but the idea of coffee vanished as soon as he saw her. she was impossible to miss — tall, stunning, and graceful. he jogged to catch up to her, but she was much faster than he expected her to be ; in fact, it was pretty damn difficult to keep up with her, so he kept his distance and decided he’d just follow her to her next destination and then approach her.

he knew it was creepy, but he needed to figure out what was happening to him. she led him down several blocks until they had passed most of the crowds gathered on the streets, and steve was surprised to learn she lived in a more secluded area. she entered a building that he assumed housed her apartment, so he slipped in behind her and pretended to be a resident himself. he was grateful that she took the stairs instead of the busy elevator, though he was out of breath by the time he caught up to the level she had stopped on. she was inserting a key into a door by the time he caught a glimpse of her.

steve approaches the door with uncertainty, considering the repercussions that could come with following a woman to her apartment. she’d probably call the cops on him, and he couldn’t entire blame her for doing so. he takes several seconds to catch his breath, impressed, once again, by the woman’s speed and endurance. hesitantly, slowly, he raises a hand and knocks against the door.
