[[Quick and belated notice time woops! Hey guys, just wanted to let you all Iām not dead, and neither is Blukat! Iām just spending a lot of time over on my new blog(itās a Mogar blog, woops). Anyone who wants to interact with me over there is absolutely free to, itās multifandom friendly!Ā
Please donāt worry, this definitely doesnāt mean Iām abandoning this blog. Blukat is still very near and dear to me, and thereās way too many things I have planned for him to just leave him behind. Iām just taking a momentary break, to refresh my brain and get some of my inspiration back. I love you all so so much, and Iāll be back soon!]]
when you go from a bad situation into a better one you may collapse exhausted and unsure what to do and full of grief, you may need time to regain the ability to do things as yourself or motivated by anything other than terror, you may need time to process or mourn or fall apart in ways you could not before,
and people may use this as proof that the old situation was better for you, proof that you need to go back, and it is not proof that it was better for you or proof that you need to go back
!!!
Itās so incredibly common to āfall apartā when youāre finally safe. You no longer need to stay so tightly coiled in on yourself, you can finally leave survival mode and process your trauma. Youāre not holding yourself up by sheer terror anymore and suddenly the damage that terror has done to you becomes immediate and obvious.Ā
This is so important. Donāt go back. Things are already getting better, even if it doesnāt feel that way.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā I donāt mind Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā not getting a happy ending Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā if it means āāāāāāā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā you get yours.
Knight is beginning to feel a little stressed out, but he clamps down on it. Everyone around him is freaking out, so he needs to stay calm somehow.Ā
āEveryone⦠alright. Everyone calm down. Please. We need to figure out whatās going on,ā he says softly, reaching up to gently caress Blukatās cheek.Ā āYou have every right to be upset, love. But this isnāt helping Dar right now. Please, letās⦠just breath for a moment.ā
He glances at Dar uncertainly.Ā āListen. Youāre stressing my matesprits out, and Iād appreciate it if you just. Stopped, and thought about how the fuck your words make people feel. This situation isnāt fucking normal ā and you just. Youāre not helping.ā
āLook. I donāt exactlyĀ appreciateĀ being threatened. If he turns me off, thereāsĀ noĀ guaranteeĀ I can turn back on. I donāt want to not exist.ā He hesitates, then huffs.Ā āLook, Hal and I will answer any of your questions. Weāre not here to hurt anyone ā and itās not like Dar didnāt know about us. He wanted us installed, he asked Dad to install us when Dad saved him, back on Alternia. He fixed him. Itās not our fault he forgot us āāĀ He breaks off suddenly, then lowers his voice to an electronic croon.Ā āItās not your fault either, Dar. Trauma does that to living organisms. We remember everything for you, donāt worry.ā
āOh. Oh no no no, Blukat, sir, youāre feelings are. Completely valid. You have every right to be worried and angry. This is a very stressful situation that was never even meanāt to happen. AR was just. Worried. Because the circuit that fried is important. Not to Darās health! I promise. It is nothing that can harm him or cause him any problems. Itās. More of something important to AR and I.ā Hal says quickly, the slightest bit of panic in his voice.Ā āWe. Are just not very good at conversation. Weāve only ever spoken with our self.ā
Dar swallows heavily, reaching over and gently pulling one of Blukatās hands from his face. He brings it close, nuzzling the fingers and kissing the back of his hand. āB-Blukatā¦Lususā¦Itās. Itās going to be okayā¦ā he whispers softly, slowly looking up as if doing so meanāt looking up at the two voices.
āYou doā¦? Iām..Iām sorry I forgot who you areā¦ā he says softly, squeezing Blukatās hand.
At Knightās words Blukat gives a small, shaky nod, keeping his face buried in his hand for a moment even as Dar takes one of his. Just. Breathing, forcing down the initial panic and frustration and anger. Because Knightās right, itās not helping anyone, itās definitely not helping Dar. But damn it heās just -- so tired of the same old situation. Over and over again. So tired of feeling helpless.Ā
After several minutes of gathering his composure and gathering his control he emerges again, scrubbing at his face with a slight sigh. He squeezes Darās hand and kisses Knightās cheek, expressing gratitude to both of them for being so understanding. Sometimes itās just nice to have his feelings validated. āSorry, Iām sorry, youāre right. Iām just a little -- Iāve had bad experiences with -- never mind.ā He doesnāt want to think about that right now.Ā āDarās - very special to me, and I can be a bit protective of him. And Iām not apologizing for that, but I am apologizing for being so hostile about it.ā
āOkay, so. Hal and AR. Artificial intelligence installed in Darās systems. Supposedly nonhostile? I mean you say Dar wanted you installed but him not remembering sort of -- leaves that claim in a gray area. I know Hal at least and heās not given me reason to doubt him, so Iām. Going to give you the benefit of the doubt. For now. Who isĀ āDadā exactly? Iām assuming you mean your creator?ā
āWait. Letās get one thing straight, Blukat. Youāre not my lusus, youāre Darās lusus, so you canāt tell me what to do with my mouth ā which means youāre not touching my circuitry. If you even try, Iām programmed to fry the skin off your hands,āĀ AR snaps defensively.Ā āBesides, I wasnāt talking to you. I was talking to Hal. Speaking of, Hal, guess what, I canāt fucking fix those circuits. You try. Itās my turn to talk now.ā
Knight clenches his jaw tightly, keeping his hands on Darās cheeks. He runs his thumb along his jaw gently, trying to calm him. He lets Blukat handle talking to the strange AIās.
āStarting off the conversation with, you really need to calm down. If I could have warned you about all this, I would have ā donāt blame me for you just now figuring this out. And there arenāt two. Iām A.R. Heās H.A.L. Weāre one and the same. You canāt turn off one of us without turning off the other. Now really, please, calm down. You Vantii always jump straight to threats ā itās awful. And to answer your unspoken questions, yes, we are always active. Itās our job toĀ monitorĀ Darās health, wellbeing, and safety ā and report back to Dad, so he always knows Dar is okay.ā
āIā¦Apologize so very much for his behavior. And if it helps at all I do turn off our sensors enough that we donāt see anything we shouldnāt. We just. Exist to keep Dar safe.ā Hal adds quickly, before going quiet to focus on trying to repair the circuit.
Dar is shaking, more and more. There are two voices in his head. Two. Neither of them are Signless. And only one is slightly familiar. He whimpers, loudly, and closes his eyes as tight as he can. This is not. What he expected from his quiet little walk to breathe.Ā
āā¦W-Waitā¦Dad? Whoā¦Who is your dad?ā he finally asks, voice cracking and quivering.
āExcuse the interruption but. AR. The circuit is completely fried. There is no repairing it.ā
Blukatās lip instantly curls to bear his fangs as he feels his patience very rapidly running out. Out of his entire family, Blukat probably has the most gentle of tempers - it takes a hell of a lot to get a rise out of him. But there is one place he has no tolerance, and thatās when it comes to Dar.Ā āYouāre right, Iām not your lusus -- but I am DarāsĀ lusus. And as long as youāre in his head, you better dang well believe I get to tell you what to do. If you really think Iām not willing to fry the skin off my hands to protect him from what I deem as a threat, then you better rerun those numbers.ā
Trailing off he presses a hand to his head, feeling a powerful throbbing coming on. This isnāt something he wanted to have to deal with.Ā āAnd I would love to calm down, but considering the fact that I am just now finding out that there are two more entities inside my wigglers headĀ I think Iām justified in being a little angry! Why is it that every time -- every timeĀ I get. I get defensive, about my wiggler, Iām treated like some sort of irrational lunatic. Like yeah of course, normal parents would be totally 100% not at all hostile towards finding out thereās AIs actively living inside their kids minds right?? Because thatās the sane way to approach things! Just accept that these unknown elements are totally trustworthy and not at all dangerous despite any and all previous negative experiences with unknown elements in his childs mind!ā
Falling back onto his knees he presses his hands into his eyes, breathing hard and shaky and -- heās not handling this well. He wantedĀ to handle this well, he tried so hardĀ for Darās sake, but heās not. The concern is back, more insistent and forceful then before, and he almost feels inclined to concede. He doesnāt, but he wants to. Instead he decides to stop talking for a bit before he hyperventilates himself unconscious.
āYou wouldnāt have. Hal is a goody two nonexistant shoes,āĀ the voice repeats, obviously irritated.Ā āAnd itās about fucking time someone besides you heard me. I was getting tired of yourĀ PavlovianĀ algorithms.ā
Knight has absolutely no idea whatās going on. Heās never heard Darās repair voice, or this voice, and ā and how many damn voices even are there in his matespritās head? How many people is he actually with when heās with Dar? What the fuck.
He bites down on his lip, obviously lost, and shoots Blukat a look of frustrated concern. Heās not sure if he should speak, so, instead he gently takes Dar by his arm and presses his thumb to his mouth to pull it open. He slips the little blue leaf between his lips and gives him what he hopes is a meaningful look.
āChew on this, baby, please. Itāll make your head feel better. Itās one of Janeās numb flowers. Itās used for alleviating pain.ā
āAR. Do not speak unless spoken to. Please keep in mind this is new for them and act accordingly. I apologize. To all three of you. I do my very best to stay quiet and unnoticed. It is not my place to speak to any of you unless addressed. I am sure this must be very shocki-ā¦AR I can not repair the communication circuit. Please try yourself. I. Am not far from panic. Anyway. We are H.A.L.A.R. The AI system that protects and repairs Darās circuits when possible.ā
Dar is close to hyperventilating. But. He tries his very best to catch his and calm down. Especially with something being slipped into his mouth. His eyes dart to Knight, terrified and confused. Though he does manage to chew it up and swallow it.
He grabs and grips one of Knightās hands and one of Blukatās. This is new. This is all new. And it terrifies him.
āNormally. You wouldnāt be able to hear AR. For obvious reasons. Only I am supposed to hear him. And I myself choose not to interfere with Darās personal life. When he hit his head it fried two circuits. One, a communication one that I PRAY we can fix. And the other one that keeps AR quiet to everyone else.āĀ
āTheyāre a part of his robotic system,ā Blukat begins to explain slowly, for Knight and Darās sake. He isnāt sure if Darās aware of them, heās fairly sure Knight isnāt, so heāll try to explain as much as he knows. Which admittedly isnāt a lot, but damn it an attempt will be made.Ā āIāve only ever interacted with -- Hal, is it? A few times before, when Darās system malfunctioned and I needed to fix them.ā
He pauses, expression growing a little tense.Ā āI wasnāt aware of there being a second part of the system, nor that they were active all the time,ā thereās obvious discomfort and unease in his voice now, and perhaps the slightest bit of hostility.Ā āI just assumed it was a -- program activated when there was an error. Sort of like a fail safe.ā
Slowly his eyes begin to narrow.Ā āIām realizing now that is not the case, and thereās two of them, and they are very active, and if oneĀ of them doesnāt learn to control his language I will deactivate him so hard itāll cause sparks,ā he adds in a slight growl, all the anxiety and fear of the past half hour rising to a head. But his hands are still on Darās face, gentle and soothing, and heās still trickling nothing but reassurance and love to him through the link.
Iām not anti-social, Iām pro mind your own damn business.
Knight barely has time to react to anything that just happened.Ā āForge on fire, Hanali!ā he shouts, dropping down on one knee next to Dar and Blukat. He letās Blukat handle Dar, knowing he knows best, and focuses on Hanali for the moment.Ā āWhy the fuck were you running?ā
Hanali is staring at them from his spot the ground, stammering out apologies as he shakily collects the supplies off the floor. āSorry, Captain, I-I was, in a hurry, I-I-Iā¦ā He shakes the bandages in his arms. āMaāam Peixes needed these right away, Iāā
Knight narrows his eyes.Ā āIs anyone hurt?ā
He shakes his head quickly.Ā āNo sir, I ā I, ah, well, Aviva āā
Knight shakes his head firmly.Ā āGo, hurry. Iāll get your report later.ā
Hanali nods and jumps to his feet, stammering out a few more apologies before taking off. He leaves behind a blue leaf, which Knight picks up before turning to Dar.
āHey, love,ā he croons softly.Ā āChew on this, itāll help with the paāā
He doesnāt get to finish his sentence, as heās cut off quite abruptly by a loud, angry voice breaking out of nowhere ā no ā out of Dar.
āMotherFUCKER! THAT IGNORANT SAVAGE FRIED AN ENTIRE COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT! HAL! HAAAAL!!!!ā
What.
He slowly sits up, holding his head as his breath hitches on cries that want to come out. He doesnāt want to bawl though. That might make Blukat and Knight upsetā¦And he definitely doesnāt want that, no matter how bad that hurt. The tears though, he canāt help. They bubble up heavy and warm and roll down his freckled cheeks.
āHh-hhhā¦.ā he whines aloud, rubbing at his eyes so he can MAYBE get a clear view of what Knight is holding out to him.Ā āTh-ā¦..ā he starts but. He abruptly stops when he hears that unknown voiceā¦comingā¦from his head.
āYes yes, I am very much aware. I am trying to remedy the situation but I can not focus with you screaming profanities at the top of you nonexistent lungs. I-ā¦Oh. AR, I do believe I am not the only one who can hear you.ā
And Dar just. Screeches.
The first thing Blukat does is -- freeze. Completely. Every single muscle locks up, pupils dilating and mouth falling open as his brain momentarily short circuits. Instantly thereās a violent explosion of hostile concern, insistent inquiry; it takes him a few dazed, delirious seconds to realize itās Tar, and he somehow has half a mind to press the other back.
Tar goes. Unwilling and frustrated, but he goes. Leaving Blukat to try and get his brain processing again, blinking a few times as a frown slowly sets into his face. One of those voices sounds -- familiar. The other is new and strange and terrifying, but. OneĀ of them he knows. Giving himself a shake he reaches up to gently pet Darās face, making soft whistling noises at him.
āDar, little love ssssssh calm down itās okay, itās okay weāve got you, deep breaths,ā he reassures, terrified but voice not showing it as he considers Darās head warily.Ā
āIāve -- never heard your voice outside of repair mode,ā he finally addresses the second voice he heard - still doesnāt know the first one. Trying to ignore that fact.Ā
Knight shoots Blukat a worried look, squeezing his hand a little tighter. He herds Dar in front of the both of them so they can watch him carefully as he walks. He turns his head slightly, running the bridge of his nose along Blukatās jaw, humming softly.
āItāll be okay,ā he murmurs.Ā āYouāre his lusus. Youāre the one whoās been there for him for the past two years. Nothing can change that, and nothing will change that.ā He glances at Dar, still so focused on his flute, and lower his voice a little more.Ā āā¦.And even if he remembers that thereās someone else from his past that used to mean something to him⦠it doesnāt change how much you mean to him now. Okay?ā
He Ā glances away from Dar just a moment to look at Blukat ā and thatās when it happens. One of his soldiers, Hanali Barnet, comes barreling around the corner with an armful of medical supplies. His eyes light on Dar and he tries to stop, but itās too late āĀ
Crash.
Dar is in his own little world. A part of him just feelsā¦so so horrid for forgetting where this flute came from. His fingers brush over the inscription, a soft sigh escaping his lips. Karkat Vantas. It had been so long since heād been addressed by that nameā¦It didnāt even feel like his anymore. And honestly, he was okay with that.
His name was Dar. A gift from his family and his new life. A sign that he was happy and loved. And he wouldnāt go back to being Karkat even if someone payed him. Karkat was sad. Karkat was all alone. But not Dar. Dar was happy, all the time. He was surrounded by people who adored him. Karkat never had that.
ā¦Did heā¦?
He swallows lightly, turning his head to say something to his lusus and matesprit when BAM. He feels something hit him like a truck and he goes crashing backwards. His head whacks the ground with a smack and he swears everything goes black for a split second or two. As his vision clears, he can see stars and. Shit fuck that hurt. And he swears he heard that voice in his head say something along the lines of āUh ohā.
āO-owwā¦.ā he whines softly. Yeah. Yeaaah heās tearing up.Ā
At Knightās reassurance Blukat smiles as best he can, feeling a bit guilty that his matesprit had taken note of his distress. Itās stupid and petty and he knows that, and he feels ashamed that Knight is aware of it. So he tries to play it off as best he can, giving a casual shrug and a big grin that doesnāt quite reach his eyes.Ā āI know, donāt worry about me Knight, Iām just being a worry wart,ā he reassures him as sincerely as he can -- and then everything he was thinking of seconds ago is officially flung out the window.
āDar oh my god are you okay!?ā He yelps in alarm, flinging himself down to his wards side. A quick glance is also thrown towards the person who just crashed into Dar, just long enough to reassure himself that said person didnāt break a leg or something in the fall. Reassured that is not the case, he instead refocuses on Dar.
āLittle love, darling, ssssh itās okay,ā he murmurs as he quickly begins running his hands along him, frantically checking for any injuries even as he tries to stay composed. Donāt panic, Dar will panic, bad idea.
Knight nods quickly, his expression growing more worried by the moment. He holds out his arms and gently scoops Dar up, twirling him around a bit in an attempt to somehow shake off the unease that has so tightly gripped him. He sets him down by the door and hums softly, reaching back to lace his fingers with Blukatās and dragging him forward.Ā
āCome on, guys,ā he says, forcing some cheer into his tone.Ā āLetās go outside and take a walk around the palace. I think my troops are out during laps, we can jeer at them as they pass.ā
When the flute is back in his hands he clutches it. Tight and close to his chest. He. Almost would swear he heard that robotic voice in his head say something likeā¦āFinally.ā or something of the like but. No. No that isnāt possible. That voice only ever spoke when running diagnostics on his systems or scanning an area. He must have been hearing things.
When heās lifted he gasps softly, blinking quite a few times before trying his very best to smile at them both.
āThatā¦sounds really goodā¦I like that ideaā¦ā he mutters softly. He tries to add his usual enthusiasm to his voice butā¦No. Itās just not there. His voice is quiet and distant.
Swallowing hard around the tightness in his throat and the tightness in his chest Blukat just nods, squeezing Knightās hand maybe a bit tighter then he would normally. Itās the only thing that betrays the distress in his mind, which he continues to force back as they exit the room. That and his unusual silence, probably, but he realizes thatās a problem soon enough and quickly tries to compensate for it.
āYeah, that sounds like fun! I can uhm,ā he loses his train of thought for a moment.Ā āCheer them, on, not jeer them. I donāt jeer at people thatās rude,ā he mumbles, forehead furrowing slightly as if perplexed by the mere concept and not as if heās finding it hard to remember how words work.
His free hands starts to reach for one of Dars, but seems to lose itās courage halfway through. Darās hands are busy holding the flute. Best not get in the way.
Knight looks at Dar worriedly, reaching out to touch his arm gently, giving it a reassuring squeeze. He lets his gaze trail over to Blukat and the flute. He reaches out to run his finger along the crest of it.
āYeah, thatās⦠thatās what that is,ā he murmurs nervously.Ā āDar, do you remember where you got this?ā
His eyes immediately dart up to follow the flute, hands almost reaching back out to nab at it. But he doesnāt. The reassurance warming through the link is another to stop him from snatching at it. Thoughā¦He doesnāt tear his gaze from it. He feels as if he canāt. Likeā¦itās been missing all this time. And he shouldnāt let it from his sight again.
āI..I donātā¦I canāt rememberā¦But itā¦it feels importantā¦ā he finally says softly, teeth biting down on his bottom lip. āCanā¦Can we uhm. Can we go outside? Iā¦I suddenly feel reallyā¦I donāt knowā¦I. I just need some fresh air and movement.ā As if on queue, his knees quiver.
The unease is stronger now, that small anxious part of him flickering into life. This is clearly something from Darās timeline - something important. Important things from Darās timeline doesnāt usually end well for him. Memories of Gamzee stings at the back of his eyelids. And maybe thereās a small part of him that admits thereās some petty fear there, that fear of -- new things. Old things. Important things, more important then him.Ā
Maybe he puts too much stock in his and Darās relationship. Maybe he doesnāt put enough. But when Dar speaks he nods without hesitation, slowly rising to his feet and gently pressing the flute back into his hands as promised.Ā āYeah, of course little love. Letās go take a little walk.ā
