Right now that it is winter, it is normal for you to struggle keeping your temperature up...just keep trying ! Move things around, make sure your tank is sealed, add more moss, etc. You will know when it is too cold for your crabbies because they will be less active. When it is too cold, their metabolism starts to slow down and they go into "surviving mode" aka trying not to expend unnecessary energy use. Throwback picture to be when one of our E's was not letting go of his shell š that was clearly too small for him. E's will be VERY stubborn with their shells. It's important to provide lots of shells and a variety of them too. E's tend to prefer much narrow and oval openings, however, some of mine have picked green turbos so this definitely shows that it is up to their preference! Also, crabby was probably munching on this chia seed sprout šš. Sphagnum moss is an essential item to have in a crabitat. It is a plant that does very well at absorbing moisture. If you're having trouble keeping your humidity up, you can add a moss pit to help you boost up your humidity. It is also a very popular hangout spot for crabs because they can borrow down in it āŗļø. Hermit crabs are from the Order Decapoda. "Deca", meaning 10, refers to 10 legs. So YES! Your hermie has 10 legsš³! These include the chelipeds, or front claws, which are used for grasping and pinching. The larger of the two chelipeds (the big claw) is designed for self-defense, while the the smaller front claw is used for feeding and scooping water. The fifth pair of legs assist in grooming the gills and removing waste from the shell, while the other pairs are reserved for movement. Their legs each individually vary in color. Strawberry crabs get their name from their extremely similar red-strawberry š color. Purple pinchers, like the one in this photo may have variations of purple/red/orange. Lastly, Ecuadorians, are the least pigmented; they are usually soft gray/brown/yellow tones but can over time gain some orange in the legs š. Hermit crabs are what they eat! Hermit Crab Shell Guide on Shell Types and Buying Shells
Iāve gotten numerous questions on where to get hermit crab shells and what types of shells to get. Knowing your species of hermit crab is important because different species prefer different shells. Their bodies actually grow with the shape of the shell and different shells are available in different region, thus making different species prefer different ones. Knowing the kinds of shells to look for is important because if you do not offer correct shells, shell fights may ensue ( you need to offer 3 good shells per crab!). Plus, Iāve seen many people waste money on āhermit crab shell packsā and only 2-3 shells be usable. Iām only going to mention Purple Pinchers and Ecuadorian crabs on this post as they are the most common species. Iāll be linking the different types of shells to an online store called Ā Naples Sea Shell Company, but at the end Iāll provide a variety of sources of whereto purchase shells. Ā
Shell Size
You generally want to aim at shells that are the same size as the hermit crab in mind and slightly bigger. Exceptions might be if your crab is in an obviously too big shell. If you are buying locally, you can probably get away with eyeballing it. Ā If you are buying online, youāll defiantly need to measure the shell opening. Some sites have the shell opening and shell length listed, but we are only concerned about the opening size. DO NOT get these confused. Shell lengthĀ doesnāt equal shell opening.Ā You can use a ruler to measure the opening or calipers (which are most accurate). It is very easy to order the wrong size and I would highly recommend doing a 'test orderā before spending tons of money. Most crabbers seem to order too big. Here is a nice visual on how to measure shells.
Shell Types
Purple Pinchers- prefer round openings
Turbo ShellsĀ are the most popular choice among purple pinchers. Turbo shells come in a wide variety of colors, polished/unpolished, etc. Turbos that have a mother of pearl lining (white/silver inside) are more prefered and common versus a gold mouth turbo which has a golden inside.This is a crab favorite among purple pinchers. I highly recommend suppling many shells of this variety.Ā
Magpie shellsĀ are the next most common Iāve seen, however they arenāt as prefer as turbos because they weight more and thus more energy spent by the crab carrying it around. Every crab Iāve gotten has switch from a magpie to a turbo, but some crabs will still prefer it and it never hurts to offer!
EcuadoriansĀ - generally prefer shells with oval/D shaped openings, however this species is VERY picky about shells. Iām sorry I donāt have enough insight on E shells because Iāve only owned PPs!

These shells are general not preferred by hermit crabs in captivity. There are always exceptions and it never hurts to offer your hermit crabs these, but if you are on a tight budget and donāt want to waste money on a shell your crab may never use then donāt go out of your way to get these shells.
Shells that are general thin slitted, odd shapes, disproportional opening to shell length, have teethed/ridged inner lining where the crabās soft abdomen will be are generally avoided. Here are some picture example of shells that arenāt favored.
Delphine shells are commonly sold as hermit crab shells, but due to the nature of the inside space most crabs do not take these.
Most hermit crabs cannot fit into these types of shells
This shell is oddly shaped and the inside space is not ideal for hermit crabs.
These shells had a small opening compared to the inside space so they are generally not preferred by hermit crabs.
Painted Shells
Do not EVER offer painted shells. It is better to offer no shells than to offer painted ones. Painted shells are toxic. Some people claim some shells have painted with 'safeā substances, but it most likely isnāt true and its better to stay safe.
One thing you should be aware of is 'naturalā lacquered shells. These shells appear to be natural and smooth which can very easily be mistaken Ā for polishing. These shells are just bad as painted shells (the FMR hermit crab shell packs on amazon have been known to supply this type of shell). Sometimes a bubble would form as pictured Ā on one lacquered shell I have.
If your shell has this type of bubble it is not a natural shell. Also, these shells will smell like an auto body shop when boiled so that is also another way to tell. If you have a super smooth shell that doesnāt stink when boiled, donāt worry it is only a polished shell!
Before Adding Shells
Donāt just put your new shells in the crabitat, they need to be sanitized first! You can do this by boiled the shells for 10 minutes in dechlrorinated salt water. Make sure the shells have cooled of before adding to the crabitat. It is generally a good idea to boil your old shells periodically as a shell cleaned by saltwater is more appealing to hermit crabs, plus they often poop in shells shops which will find it way into the shells! ALWAYS CHECK shells for a hermit crab before boiling!
Where to buy shells
Locally:
Dollar General: They sell bags of small to medium size shells for $1. This bag contains jade turbos, babylons, and whales eye. This can located in the floral department next to those flat floral marble and stones.
Walmart: They sell a $10 bag FULL of shells. Many turbos, some whales eyes, and a variety of other kinds in many different sizes. Excellent value.This can located in the floral department next to those flat floral marble and stones.
Hobby Lobby/Michaels/Jo-ann: These stores sell many shell packs at different prices. These stores normally have a 40% coupon on their website which can be printed or you can pull it up on your smart phone for additional savings.
Ross: Hit or miss. I was never able any at my local Ross, but the crabbers who luck out get a nice variety and value.
Local Pet Stores: This is the more expensive route and can be a hit or miss, but if you arenāt having any luck try a local/mom and pop store. Iāve found a better shell variety at my local store versus Petsmart.
Thrift stores/flea markets: Again, a hit or miss, but if can find some youāre bound to get an awesome deal.
Online:
Naples Sea Shell CompanyĀ - I have personally ordered from there and was really happy with my order. They offer beautiful polished and unpolished shells!
Deltona Sea ShellsĀ - many crabbers like this store as well
Shells of AquariusĀ - You have to sift through there sidebar navigation and know what you are looking for, but they are cheap.
Sachās Crab PageĀ - Iāve personally ordered shells from here and had a positive experience.
Hermit Crab Patch- seems to be another favorite among crabbers
