“A picture is worth a thousand words” they say. Well this image is speaking volumes. Not only is it giving exposure to the artists, it supporting a great cause. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) asked The Veronicas (a pop rock duo) to model for them. I found this image when I searched “Benetton puma advertisement”. Obviously this isn’t a puma advertisement. I was looking to see if Benetton actually created the racy Puma advertisement that is all over the internet. The red color of the lights in the background is what stood out to me while I was searching. Then I noticed the red muscles on the animals’ bodies. That’s is when I realized the two women holding the animals were The Veronicas! I loved the pop rock duo as I was growing up and they’re what completely wheeled me in. The advertisement reads “Here’s the Rest of Your Fur Coat.” In a softer red compared to the lights in the background and the muscles of the animals. Anyone that follows their career knows The Veronicas are known for their sense of fashion. I loved their dresses and how it still followed the color scheme. They’re wearing dark burgundy dresses, with cute black heels, and red lipstick to bring the outfit together. The blue smoke behind them brings out their faces. After analyzing their shoes for a moment, that’s when I saw part of the purpose for the advertisement. I’ve heard about PETA and knew they had to do with animals based off of jokes I’ve about the organization in movies and TV shows. I never actually knew what their purpose was. At the bottom of the ad in white and a shaded red reads “The Veronicas for PETA.” That’s what made me want to find the purpose of this image. I went to their website and found out that PETA is trying to raise awareness about animal cruelty and mistreatment. The Veronicas agreed to do the ad because they believe and stand for the cause. Jess (one of the members of the duo) said "Wearing fur is unnecessary and unacceptable." The visual cue would definitely be the animals in this picture. The body is the main attraction. The head is what made this movement real to me. The fur that is left around the head makes the eyes bulge out of the rabbit on the left. The fur around the paws on the animal to the left bring your attention to its face. Unlike the animal on the right with its eyes wide open the animal on the left eyes are shut. The way she is holding the animal on the left makes the animal look pained. The thought of the animal being in pain brings out the purpose. This was a great advertisement with its color scheme and visual cues. With those two combined it makes the consumer want to find out the purpose of the advertisement. This was well put together; I respect PETA for this advertisement. Not enough to become a vegetarian though.

Since I couldn’t use a picture of myself, boyfriend or someone I know, I decided to keep it personal and use my name. Well, my namesake, Aaliyah. I’m actually a fan of typography, just not when I have to learn about it. I searched “typography Aaliyah” and this is my favorite one of the selection they had. Just look at this image. It’s beautiful. The way a person can use words to create an image is amazing to me. Typography is very effective in my opinion. This image, for instance, captured my attention immediately. Everything else seemed dull compared to this image. I love the colors! The different shades of blue and purple the artist used to outline Aaliyah’s profile is genius. The usage of these colors relaying to her profile allows for the viewer to actively take part in defining key facial characteristics, which make the typography. The overlap of the words is what makes up the features. I love the rhythm of the hollow affect the artist used to highlight the shadow that was casted in the original photo. The sequencing also brings out her right eye, the tip of her nose, lips, the outline of her face, neck and her left shoulder. The artist skillfully put the strap of her shirt in there by using words. At the top of her shoulder it just looks like a line but it’s actually the letter “L” for the word “Love.” Also how like how the top of her head and down by her shoulders and chest are purple. I naturally looked at the top of the image and then realized the same color at the bottom. That was a quick glance because I was drawn in to the middle where the blue which is her face. Then I trailed back to the top and bottom of them image to fully observe it. The background and the typography go perfectly together. The background is a cold color. The top of the typography starts off as cold, and makes a seamless transition to the bottom of the typography, which ends up being warmer. The typeface is something to that sticks out also. There is serif, script and other typeface in there as well. That’s what I like the most. I like how they made “Love” script, “Beauty” sans serif, and other words such as “Faith,” “Women,” “female” and “Hope” other typeface that wouldn’t stand out as much. The different typefaces all make a link to one another, one word calling you to the next. The different sizes of the words put everything into perspective. Ultimately you see Aaliyah’s profile but that’s what’s great about the typography. You have to look at the image and look away a few times before you can actually see the different words that make up the profile. The spacing of the words is everything here. Everything is close together and ONLY on her shoulder you can see that it is spaced out. The artist purposely put BEAUTY as the focus words. I see the repetition of word as a dedication to who she was in the eyes of the artist.

Stereotypes can be found everywhere. Everyone says “stereotypes are terrible,” “you shouldn’t judge anyone based on a stereotype,” etc.… Let’s face it. We all have and/or do judge people subconsciously based on stereotypes. I could try and blame society for this but it wouldn’t work this time. Stereotypes come in all shapes and forms. Whether it’s by age, gender, race, economic standing, or even geographically.
This is a photo of my roommate Samantha and me. This was taken during the summer at her family’s lake house. We were just there hanging out with her family. Some people would look at this picture and think we’re just wild college students. They would see the bonfire and assume there was a big party going on. You can see the red solo cups resting on the bonfire near me. Some would automatically assume that we’re underage and drinking alcohol. Also, the way we are dressed could imply promiscuity. There’s also the stereotype that all college girls experiment with one another and do promiscuous things. This looks like we could be on a beach in the south setting up for a party. Or we could be somewhere celebrating spring break. Or this could simply be an ad about unity and the fight against racism. All of these assumptions aren’t even true but some would believe it is based on a photograph.
Stereotypes can have a profound impact on our development as people. In this picture you have two different races and the stereotype that black and white people have no common ground. If I let this stereotype affect me I wouldn’t have gone out with my roommate, and had a good time. The stereotype that girls are promiscuous can also have an impact. For some boys, viewing a picture like this can automatically bring the idea in their head that both females are doing sexual stuff with one another, or are “easy”. This connotation can bring unwanted attention, and can lead to worse cases, such as rape. The problem is everyone’s words are different. On most occasions you can research the origin of a photograph, ask the people in the photo about it or even ask the photographer themselves. Some people do not care to dig that deep. They see the image, make their own interpretations and then they are satisfied. I don’t believe we can stop stereotypes, but I do believe we can stop our future actions pertaining to our preconceived ideas.
Stereotypes are dangerous and could be life threatening. It’s a sad case because that’s how people can end in jail or even killed because a picture doesn’t tell the whole story. There have been numerous cases where a video or an imaged looked like something but there was more behind it. Simply because it fit a certain stereotype it would be able to hold up in court without reasonable justification. I believe the change starts with us. Our preconceived stereotypes on a person’s age, gender, race, economic standing, or even geographically are already there. We should learn the full story and think about our actions. You can look at this photo however you want but get to know the real people behind the stereotype.

I’m looking at this photo with the Gestalt sensory theory in mind. This painting demonstrates proximity, continuation, and repetition. The example we were shown in class shows the group is in the front of the picture. I like to be different so I chose a painting that has two groups. This painting also just happened to catch my eye as I was searching on Google. It’s so genuine and authentic. It looks like the artist took their time and put a great amount of focus into this.
Proximity is shown in three different ways in this painting. The orange flowers off to the left side of the painting can be considered one group. The two sets of people can be seen as another group. The second proximity technique I noticed was the sets of people. The woman with the blue umbrella and the small child next to her in the front are the main focus. The third proximity technique would be the sets of people in comparison to the house. Although the house is in the center of the painting it has nothing to do with the two sets of people walking.
That’s when you notice the continuation. You can see that the flowers are intermingled with the two sets of people. The sets of people aren’t interacting with the flowers; they’re simply walking through them. The sets of people are the main focus not the flowers.
Lastly, but not least you can see the repetition in the painting. The woman in the back with the small child isn’t as detailed as the two in the front. It seems as if the artist was trying to show movement. The set of people in the front are the present. The set of people in the back are the past. It’s showing where they came from. If it were only one set of people, you would naturally assume they were coming from the house in the center of the photo. If you look at it like this you will notice they are walking down a hill.
When you learn about Gestalt sensory theory in mind it will change the way you look at certain things. It can help you to become a critical thinker. There are multiple viewpoints and aspects in the things we look at. It’s just a matter of knowing what to look for.
