you and reese have been together for a few months now. in your opinion, you've done a pretty good job at keeping your relationship a secret—everyone just thinks you’re good friends.
but good friends wouldn’t kiss each other the way you do, hold each other’s hand, and sneak into each other’s rooms at night.
part of the reason why no one knew was the fear of how your families would react.
you were your parents' only child, and you didn’t want to disappoint them. nothing they did gave you the idea that they would be disappointed, but you couldn’t stop the lingering feeling in the back of your mind.
reese was always there to reassure you, however.
that’s why you were currently at his house, laying in his bed, while he and malcolm threw a ball back and forth.
“dude, you suck at this,” reese said when malcolm failed to catch the ball for the third time in a row. malcolm scoffed.
“it’s not like you’re any better. you’ve dropped the ball too,” malcolm argued. reese rolled his eyes.
“i have other things on my mind,” he said, quickly glancing at you on his bed. malcolm took the ball, placing it back on the shelf, before sighing.
“whatever, man. i’m gonna get a snack, do you two want anything?” he asked, looking between you and reese.
you shook your head no as reese answered.
“nah, we’re good. we were gonna head out soon anyway,” he responded.
right. your parents invited reese over for dinner. you both decided that tonight was the night that you told them about your relationship.
you got up, swinging your legs over the side of reese’s bed.
“thanks anyway,” you smiled at malcolm. he returned the smile before leaving you and reese alone.
reese turned around, a mischievous grin on his face. he leaned over you, kissing you quickly on the lips.
“ready to go?” he asked. you nodded. reese could sense your nervousness. he grabbed your hand, giving it a quick squeeze.
“it’ll be okay,” he reassured you before pulling you to your feet.
on your way to the front door, however, you were stopped by lois.
“where are you two going?” she asked, focusing her attention on reese.
“uh,” he stammered, confused as to why he was being interrogatede. he gestured towards you. “his house?”
“absolutely not,” she said. she shot you an apologetic look before continuing. “remember what you did to the neighbors the other day? you’re grounded. no friends, no friends’ houses—nothing.”
“but mom,” reese whined. he had completely forgotten that he was grounded from leaving the house. lois shook her head no. you worriedly looked between your boyfriend and his mom.
“i promised his parents i would be there for dinner,” reese continued. she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. she looked between the two of you for a moment, studying your expressions and body languages.
lois was always good at reading people, especially her kids. she picked up on the way reese always hovered around you, how he always brushed his hand against yours, and how he looked at you like you hung the stars.
she also noticed the way your cheeks turned red around her son, the way you always smiled at him without realizing it, and how you allowed reese to linger around.
she had a pretty good idea of what was going on between the two of you.
“fine,” she sighed. “you can go. but be back before nine.”
reese’s face lit up.
“thanks mom,” he said, rushing you out of the house.
in the car, with hands intertwined, reese tried to calm you down.
“we’ll be fine. i’m sure your parents won’t care,” he said, eyes focused on the road ahead. you took a deep breath.
“doesn’t make me any less scared,” you responded. the twists in your stomach grew more intense as you got closer to your house.
when you finally got there, you almost didn’t leave the car. reese softly placed a kiss on your cheek.
“i’m serious. if it’s not okay, then so what? i still love you,” he said. you smiled at his words.
“i love you too,” you responded.
“then let’s do this,” he said with a hopeful glint in his eyes.
inside, your mom already had dinner set out on the table. your parents were in their usual spots.
“sorry we’re late,” you apologized, sitting down quickly. your mom waved you off.
“don’t worry, we only just sat down ourselves,” she said before turning her attention to reese and smiling at him.
“reese, how have you been?” your dad asked while he cut into the food on his plate.
“good,” reese replied, doing the same.
in all honesty, you should’ve been eating your food as well. you were just too nervous. your mind was racing.
“honey?” your mom interrupted your thoughts. dinner had been happily going on for some time now, with almost everyone’s plate empty.
everyone except yours.
“are you okay? you haven’t touched your food,” she asked, concerned laced in her voice. you looked to reese, who nodded reassuringly at you.
you took a deep breath and looked between your parents.
“mom, dad, i need to tell you something,” you said. you reached for reese’s hand, touching it softly.
“reese and i are together,” you said timidly. your parents looked at the two of you.
“and if you don’t accept this, then so be it. but i love him,” you finished. reese gave your hand a gentle squeeze.
your mom was the first to break.
“oh sweetheart,” she cooed, a smile spreading on her face. she looked at your dad who was wearing a similar expression.
“we always knew.”
you furrowed your brows.
“what?” you asked. you turned to reese, and he looked just as confused as you were.
“yeah,” your mom nodded like it was obvious—because it was.
“we talked to lois and hal about it,” your dad said. “lois was the one to suggest the idea in the first place. when we started paying more attention, we noticed it too.”
“what do you mean my mom suggested it?” reese asked with red cheeks.
“she noticed the way you two looked at each other,” your mom explained. she started to laugh softly while speaking.
“i mean, friends don’t look at each other like that.”
“so you’re telling me,” you started, trying to rationalize this in your head. “i was freaking myself out over something everyone already knew about?”
your parents looked at each other before looking back at you.
“we didn’t know per se, we just had a really good hunch,” your dad said, trying to make you feel better. you sighed and placed your head in your hands. reese’s hand found its way to rub your back soothingly.
“so my family knows too?” reese asked. your mom gave him a sympathetic look while nodding.
“pretty much,” she said.
“this is so embarrassing,” you muttered. you had gotten yourself so worked up, so terrified that your parents weren’t going to accept you. you thought you and reese had been keeping your relationship pretty well hidden.
apparently not.
“mom, dad,” you spoke up. “can we be excused?”
you looked at reese, trying to communicate to him that you both needed to speak to his family. your parents nodded.
“of course, honey,” your mom said, watching as you and reese quickly stood up and rushed back to the car. she looked at your dad and shook her head, a smile on her face.
“young love,” she chuckled.
back in the car, you and reese debriefed what had just happened.
“i can’t believe they knew and didn’t tell us,” you complained. reese scoffed.
“i know right? like, i should be a total chick magnet. everyone should assume i have a girlfriend, not a boyfriend,” he joked, a teasing grin on his face. you punched him in the arm.
“not funny,” you warned.
“sorry, sorry,” he sighed. “i’m just nervous about my parents now.”
you spent the rest of the car ride trying to comfort him, and when you arrived at his house, he stormed in with you close behind him.
“mom,” he said sternly. lois was at the kitchen sink, cleaning up after dinner.
“you’re back early,” she said, placing down the plate she was currently cleaning. she turned to face you both.
“when did you find out about us,” reese asked, gesturing between the two of you.
“for a while—reese, you’re not very good at hiding your feelings,” she said. before reese could argue back, she continued.
“i’ve seen the way you look at him,” she gestured to you, the sponge still in her hand. “i’ve also noticed the way you perk up like a puppy when i mention his name.”
reese’s cheeks returned to the same red color that he sported at your house. she focused her attention on you, a soft smile on her face.
“and you,” she said. “i like you. i think you’re good for my son.”
you felt your face heat up. she turned back around, returning to washing the dishes.
“i just wish you guys told me sooner,” she hummed.
reese sighed. you placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, the same way he rubbed your back at your house. you met each other’s gaze and for the first time all night, there was no nervous feeling in the pit of your stomach.
even though coming out about your relationship didn’t go exactly as you had thought, you felt good knowing that you and reese were free to be yourselves around your loved ones.
