Hi Mr. Gaiman — struggling PhD student and longtime fan of your books here! I actually just finished American Gods (I know I’m late to the party 😭), and it has become one of my favorite books to date. The exploration of myth and gods and immigration is mind blowing and I LOVED it.
Anyway, on to my question, which I’m sure you’ve answered countless questions on here about writing and beginning writers, but I wanted to ask a question more so about research. As a graduate student, my whole job is research but it’s also very much about writing; I know how to do research and I (mostly sort of kind of) know how to write, but they are two different parts of the same process. I’ve had this book idea for probably close to a decade now, which I’ve written here and there when I’ve had the time (which is very little), but it’s a historical fiction and it requires a great amount of time and research in order for the story to lock into the period and the facts. I wonder if you have any advice about what to do with the short allotment of time between writing and research. How do you thread the needle between research and writing? Did you do one before the other? Is it a mess of doing both at once? Any advice you could give me would be incredible and life changing I’m sure.
If nothing else, thank you so much for your attention and thank you infinitely for the beautiful worlds you’ve given us. You’ve helped me to believe in a more magical world! 💖
I can give you some useful generalisations. They are mostly true. So...
Research for a writer tends to be a bit smash and grab. What do you need to know before you start? Find that out then start writing. As you write you'll bump into things you don't know. Find them out. Repeat until the end of the book.
You don't always know what you don't know until you start writing.
Technically true.
He got the job.
He takes his job seriously.
Save her.
Thank you to @townsenta for letting me draw their hilarious post!

MY MASTERPIECE IS DONE
I says to myself, "GIN it's time to challenge yourself, draw some flowers."
I got a bit carried away.
ADMISSION: I am enchanted by Elliott/Harvey. Faux confidence and easily frazzled is my favorite dynamic.

So this is inspired by a bunch of different fics! And I've written a cute one too!
Buuuuut this one depicts a scene from a fic I can't tell you about with a straight face because good golly it's filthy* except for these two who are pure and adorable.
This writer has made a deeply romantic and delightful burn for these characters. It's enhanced by Elliott and Leah as BFFs/clucking hens always after the hot goss.
It's so sweet that it's the scene I needed to depict. Leah is OF COURSE spying and she's totally gonna get endless material with which to harass Elliott with.
THANKS WRITER, you know who you are ;D
(You can probably look it and mine up if you want to, there aren't a lot of Elliott/Harvey.)
*I'm Ace so all the stuff flies over my head and I zone out so I just skim over it and then I'm like, "I guess they're happy? Good for them!?" hoo hoo hoo
Cuddly Harvey: Achieved.
Edited to add hat version.
And so it begins.......first up, the good doctor.
Shane, Sebastian
Mini headcanon: Harvey may not have been an Army pilot but he was enlisted instead as an army doctor. Also Harvey in the fic, Shelter by ohsocyanide, where he was discharged from the army with no possibility of going back to active duty and then accepting the position of general doctor for Pelican town.....is my canon now.
